Great design. I love the gravel area. Do people not realize it's a tv show? The decorations are props, not designed to be left in place, other than furniture. I am sure the owners have great ideas and will put their own tastes in decor. If owners feel they need a railing on lower deck, one can always be added later. It opens it up visually to not have one. I think I would have used some evergreen plants for edging. I would also add some sculptures for marking edges of deck in the winter if snowfall is deep.

Yes, folks realize it’s a tv show. However, for it to be relevant and interesting, it should address concerns raised: how to design for age of the owners / guests, how to design for a home with pets, etc. these are challenges that we all face and we’d all perk up if design shows gave ideas on how to deal with these concerns.

I am still trying to figure out why they would have removed the stone slab. He said it was in the middle of the yard, but it wasn't, it was directly under the door. They could have put the deck on posts, on top of it. Then she could have used underneath for storage w/ nice sliding lattice panels w/ locks. I don't know, it looks ok but I personally don't care for what they did, especially for an older person.

Especially with her elderly mom, I wonder about the absence of railings and the square steps. For the same reason, it's too bad that there is so little space to walk around the lounge chair at the bottom of the garden. Did the pea gravel ended up being full of leaves and weeds over time? And did the dog have to use the groundcover when he was let out? If so, I imagine it would be like an Easter egg hunt to scoop!
@popazz13 жыл бұрын
Stunning! As for the comments about the lack of hand rails, whilst I get what folk are saying I imagine Jackie would have been consulted throughout each stage of the project, (given she was paying for it), and would have given her consent either way. Plus she doesn't look disabled or decrepit in any way so likely she felt okay about the lack of hand rails. I would have liked to have seen a water feature of some description, oh and globes of varying sizes ...... just NO, lol. But that's just a personal bette noire. The team and sub-contractors seem to gel pretty well and had fun whilst working. All in all a great project.

They don't design for safety or aging in place. No hand rails, no distinction with the levels of the deck, when you pull out the chair, you are so close to slipping off the edge. Is it lovely? yes. Is it good functional design? no.

Japanese Maples delicate? That's a lie. Ever see a Bonsai Master tear into a Japanese Maple? Having the "Decorator" was useless. The large recliners won't get used (old people don't have the agility to get in or out of them), the other "touches" (assorted Balls and those silly looking Champaign glass bowls) should be changed to potted flowering plants, the setting needs bright colors.
@maryiorio4264 жыл бұрын
There are not a lot of brightly colored flowers that grow well in shade.
She's not "elderly". Her mother is 86, so realistically she is in her early 60s. Obviously she's not getting younger, but she should be able to get in and out of a lounge chair for another 10-15 years.

This is the only one I don't like. I always disagree with how many trees they plant but I don't even like this design except for the slow gradual descent around the maple. Even the decorator mentioned that it was overwhelming. And why was the installer/demolition guy surprised to find an old pre-existing patio under the deck? That's what our house has. Then, as usual, they planted 3 unnecessary, large trees on a fence line which will completely outgrow the space - and completely shade the neighbor as well. I agree with other commenters that there needs to be a railing at least where there are no evergreens to delineate the lower deck edge. Plus, the decking will trip anyone coming from the alley to the back yard, and what is the little slot between the upper deck and the handrail? The only good thing about this episode is they showed the mistakes and the owner's frustrations.
