This video is about our visit to Mammoth Spring State Park in Mammoth Springs Arkansas. This place is wonderful! It's the 10th largest sporing in the world and produces on average 9.5 million gallons of water per hour. There's an old Hydroelectric plant at the dam that used to be functional up to the 1970's. Standing over the dam and watching and listening to the water flow is such an axing experience!

Mammoth Spring is a fantastic place to visit. I remember going there a couple of times as a little kid in the late 70’s and just loving it. It’s a very special place. I think a lot of people haven’t been there just because they don’t know about it.

Lot fancier than when I was there as a kid, close to 60 years ago. We were there to see friends and stayed at some cottages down stream and fished in the river out back of them. Remember how cold the water was.

Mammoth Spring is the headwater/source for the Spring River. The water is so cold in the first couple of miles that it supports a trout fishery. Summer weekends the river is covered up with floaters (inner tubes mostly), canoes, and kayaks while the beaches are one big party.

I was in the area on business back in December, 2011. I had a day off and stumbled upon this place by accident. I'm a sucker for anything related to water and have a love of trains. So to combine the two was outstanding. Unfortunately, because of the time of year, it was rather chilly and vegetation was dormant. I was the only one there that day and everything was closed. But I could walk around freely just like you stated. To my surprise, a train passed through during my time there so that was pretty cool. I've wanted to take my wife to see it but haven't been in the area since. I agree though, it is somewhat of a not-so-hidden gem. And the cost of admission is perfect. I'm also a big music fan so to learn of the connection to the Grand Old Opry was a cool find as well. Great video. Congrats.

The train screaming like that is a indication of worn “Tires” Yes they call them that. They are FLAT…. They are beveled to induce a centering camber. When the TIRES flatten out that BEVEL… it causes the Flanges to run hard against the rail and produces that “SCREAM”
@royreynolds108
@royreynolds108 2 жыл бұрын
The train is traversing a sharp curve. It has nothing to do with "tires" as they are not used on rail cars or most diesel locomotives.

To determine the flow rate, only need to measure the depth of the water going over the crest of the dam which is a square notch weir. They already know how wide the crest is. The other type of weir is a V-notch which will do the same thing.

The only thing that intimidates me is my lack of German language. It feels wrong to assume everyone would be willing to communicate with me in English, although I hear it's very commonly taught in school and spoken. I will walk on German soil before I die, for sure. A beautiful country full of great people.

Was just there a few days ago . Water at 52 degrees . Sorry to say there’s a sign that tells you water looks blue and clear but in reality it’s polluted with high nitrogen? I’m guessing from fertilizer and not safe to drink . Actually only fish that survives in the springs is grass pike . Very scenic place for sure .

Actually "tires" were found on steam engines, diesel locomotives don't use them, the screaming comes from the flange of the wheels and there are devices that lube them in some curves, primarily in populated areas
@royreynolds108
@royreynolds108 2 жыл бұрын
Flange oilers or greasers pump a small dab of 14% graphite grease from a trackside tank through hoses to wipers on the side of the rails for the flanges to pick up and carry along the track to lubricate the flanges on the rails as each wheel pushes a small treadle as it goes over the block. These oilers are placed just ahead of sharp curves to reduce rail wear and not just to reduce the noise of the flanges.

9.5m US gal/hour is 10tonne/sec. Assuming a 2m drop and 85% efficiency (lower end of the range for hydro) that is potential output of 166kW. Which would seem to be worth some investment. Staying in character with the existing site, and allowing enough water to go over the damn would make things less effective..

When my physics teacher first described the concept of a hydroelectric "battery" station my mind was blown. Genius! Excess power overnight, so use that to pump water uphill and give it potential energy, then during the day with all the AC units and machinery and computers up and sucking power, dump the water downhill to get some of that power back out of the system and boost the grid at peak times. It's an awesome concept.

I am amazed by hydro power generation yet find it very odd that so many of them are disabled or taken out of service/operation. Our country is looking for all the power it can yet I'm seeing so many power plants in hydro, nuclear and natural gas either eliminated from service or limited. It makes sense if they are trying to make it seem like we have a lack of power to raise power prices but in the end, we are short of power for political reasons, not because the resources aren't there. They are playing with society vs. improving it.
@mannys9130
@mannys9130 2 жыл бұрын
Good question. 🤔 I'll hazard a guess and say that it's in need of major repair or refurb to actually be an efficient producer of power, and a much newer and larger generation plant was built nearby which was designed to take on the load that was created when this one was decommissioned. That's my guess. Cost prohibitive to keep it turning, and newer plants can handle the slack no problem.
@Garth2011
@Garth2011 2 жыл бұрын
@@mannys9130 No hazard here TN. Likely there are fair reasons however, not in CA. CA politicians are reversing power production in exchange for higher rates and false claims that the state will turn into a wasteland if they don't eliminate nuclear and natural gas fired power plants. Nuclear is the most green method of all yet they're afraid of it and have plans to decommission the last one in the near future, Diablo. Hydro is the next best however, I don't see much information about them being improved or remodeled etc. CA is run by misfits and thick of payola.

Back in 1985, I was an inspector on a bridge replacement project and the dam on the stream the bridge crossed was in a nearby small town. There was a powerhouse at the dam and the machinery had just been revamped or replaced to make power again after Consumers Power had decommissioned the equipment years before that. This could be done here at this location. This is a low head turbine as the water falls only about 15 to 20 feet(head is the vertical distance water falls).
