Toedscool wasn't as arbitrary as you made it seem. They're based on wood ear mushroom. Its thin, wrinkly, doming shape and smushy texture brings to mind not only ears, but the bell of a jellyfish. The japanese word for this fungus is even kikurage, or "tree jellyfish"

I think that a convergent Pokémon has to change something that is an integral? Essential? Part of its biology? Bodyplan? if that makes sense. Like wiglett changing its body shape to look more wug-like or toedscool becoming bipedal. Easiest way to do this is by making a land dwelling Pokémon a sea creature and vice versa which is exactly what happened with the official convergents and your Fanmade ones lmao
@charcoaleater343
@charcoaleater343 Жыл бұрын
I think wiglett itself is fine, but would be cool if wugtrio was more eel like, maybe it could actually swim in the air like most fish pokemon, or maybe it could be a coiled up eel with three heads.

While the games never officially refer to them as Convergent, one of Wiglett's dex entries pretty much describes convergent evolution: "Though it looks like Diglett, Wiglett is an entirely different species. The resemblance seems to be a coincidental result of environmental adaptation." I think the general idea is still "they have similar niches so they evolve to have a somewhat similar body" (in this case Wig and Dig being mons that spend most of their time underground), but taking a lot more creative liberty than irl
@liamthorsteinson850

I feel like, out of all of them, Carnigulp was your most successful design, due to it largely retaining Carnivine's proportions and body plan. I absolutely ADORE Lurantis, and your mantis shrimp concept for Lurprawn is incredible, but I feel like the change to it's lower half is too drastic for it to register as a convergent Pokémon. the same goes for the Terasect line; the proportions are too different from their original versions that they just feel "off" when presented as a convergent mon. All together though, I really like the direction you went with this and I am really excited for more. Definitely subscribing after this.

I think the Parasect one works really well especially how it takes inspiration from the mushroom affecting Parasect's brain and taking a different spin on it with the barnacles affecting the health of turtles. Though I have to agree with Lurprawn I love Lurantis and mantis shrimp but the merging designs feels too much like a skylander swap force concept of a mantis stuck onto a mantis shrimp's body and breaks away too much from the silhouette explanation they were talking about earlier in the video. Overall a great explanation of convergent pokemon and the other concept designs turned out great
@liamthorsteinson850
@liamthorsteinson850 Жыл бұрын
@Just some wheel I like the concept of terasect's line itself, and for what it's worth, I do actually like teras' design itself. It's just that terasect stays too far from parasect's shape language too much that they don't really read as being connected in any way except name. If terasect was changed to match parasect's silhouette more, I think it would work as a much more successful design. (P.S. props for the skylanders reference.)
@jaschabull2365

To be fair to toedscool and toedscruel, a jellyfish's bell does have a pretty comparable silhouette to a mushroom's cap. Plus, there's the pun of "jelly" ear, a possible inspiration for toedscool, so I can kind of see where the designer was going with it. As for wiglett and wugtrio, I figure the idea for them came about when someone saw a bunch of garden eels in their little burrows and was reminded of dugtrio. Your convergent 'mons are so cute and awesome, I love them! I wonder if it can be done in reverse and have aquatic pokémon based on their inspirations' terrestrial namesakes. Like a horsea lookalike that looked like an actual horse, or a grass-type pyukumuku lookalike that looked like an actual cucumber. Might be fun to try to pull off.

I literally just came up with a convergent pokemon called Skinkaton, which is basically a lizard which carries around a large cooking pot that it uses to carry cooking supplies, all fashioned from clay. It does this so it could, well, cook for both themselves and other pokemon. Since it has tendency to lick its spoons clean (their saliva has similar properties to soapy water), their brightly colored tongues sometimes hang out of the corners of their mouths. Though it’s a convergent form of Tinkaton, it’s more closely related to Lickilicky and is a ground/fire type.

Since Toedscool and it's evolution's legs/tentacles are actually mycelium, I believe that they used to be rooted in the ground but likely evolved to use the mycelium stalks to move and grab things which just so happened to cause them to function similarly to tentacles over time, and if you look closely at Toedscool and toedscruel, there are clear visual differences between them and their supposed look alikes like the shape of their heads, and the way their mycelium tentacles dont have the little lines at the tips

I know it's primarily a reference to convergent evolution with convergent Pokemon, but i also think it is a reference to old RPGs especially Dragon Quest using palette swaps to increase their number of monsters as cartridge space back in the day was very limited. Convergent Pokemon have more design work done however as they have to be marketable.

To be fair, gen 5 does have a lot of convergent mon in a more traditional sense. Like Sawk and Troh with Hitmonlee and Hitmonchan, Woobat and Zubat or Geodude and Roggenrola. Granted a lot of those could be because of a common ancestor but it might not be necessarily, specially knowing that types can be evolved relatively quickly as regional variant show.

One convergent pokemon idea I had is a Grass type Lampent and Chandelure based off of plant bulbs, vines and hanging planters, one detail about both Wiglett and Toedscool is that both of them have the same number of types and opposing types to their counterparts, Wiglett is a pure water type and water is strong against ground, Toedscool is grass/ground and grass is strong against water and ground is strong against poison so the individual types of the convergent species are in some way opposite to the original's, so my hypothetical Lamplant and Chandefleur would be grass/poison type as grass is resisted by fire and poison is resisted by ghost, also there's no Litwick counterpart because they're not related hence there is no "Litwick" and it's a 2 stage pokemon that resembles a 3 stage pokemon's 2nd and 3rd stages

Also, Togepi sort of resembles a budding flower, so I thought Tulepi, Tuletic, and Tulekiss could work pretty well.

We already technically have examples of convergent evolution more similar to real life in Pokemon. The bat and bird Pokemon for example. Another one would be ocean mammals like Wailord and Palafin with Sharpedo and other fish. Obviously this is Pokemon and evolution does not work the same as real life so Game Freak could literally just say Zubat and Pidgey share a common ancestor somehow lol

Ah, i just assumed that these poke were just the original pokemon that evolved into a new species over time. Like Diglett was on the island and slowly evolved into a wiglett, or that both evolved from an older common ancestor. I think it's a cool idea, especially if it's used to redesign weaker pokemon and give them stat buffs. Region variance had some issues as they had to keep the original stats the old pokemon had and made Pokedex entries more complicated.

one thing i think you should have in mind, is how the typings are super effective against the first mon, for example, digglet is ground type, which is weak against our water type wigglet; also tentacool, water/poison, weak against grass and ground toadscool.
