Nuclear Vault

15 жыл бұрын

Discusses the physics, effects and defense against nuclear fallout. Describes the phenomena of natural radiation and the dangers of fallout. Explains the value of time, distance and mass in weakening the effect of residual radiation. Examines the effects of radiation on the body, food and water. Underscores adequate shelter and prescribed decontamination measures.
stock shots:
x-ray machine; hospital; animation of nuclear blast;
gamma rays; nuclear explosion in desert; animation of weather balloons; fallout shelters; hand washing;
sign: Fallout Shelter; suburban development; manuals to build a home fallout shelter; Geiger counter;
Shows man brushing off fallout dust.
symptoms of radiation sickness; woman with radiation sickness;
Voiceovers:
How to open food packages that are covered in fallout dust:
"If water for washing is in short supply, canned goods that may have been exposed to fallout may be handled safely with a piece of paper towel."
"There is another widespread legend, the fear that fallout spells death to all life on earth. The plain fact is that even if a great number of nuclear weapons were exploded, the resulting fallout would cover only a small area of the world's total land mass."
"The real concern is this . . . how do we protect ourselves?"
"If there is a nuclear attack and you survive the initial explosion, you will have at least a half hour to get to a public or home fallout shelter."
"If you're among those compelled to travel throughout a fallout area on essential errands, there are certain rules to follow. Protect your body with boots and rubbers, gloves headgear and outer clothing that can be removed before you enter the shelter."
"Recovery from radiation sickness is nothing new. Patients
who are treated by x-rays routinely experience this sickness and get over it."
"You can get over radiation sickness, just as you get over many others [sicknesses]."

At my HS, before it was remodeled in 2000, my English teacher discovered a room 4 stories beneath the ground filled with various sports equipment. Upon emptying it found a fully stocked federal shelter from the 50s when it was built... very neat! He kept the Survival Biscuits too lol

Glad this information is still around. For further reference, I would recommend a book called "Under the Cloud" which gives detailed history of the atomic testing in the US and how much of the country was exposed to radioactive fallout from those tests. By the by, washing off canned goods before opening them is good general food prep hygiene advice, especially if they are dusty from long shelf storage.

My late husband was in the USAF and retired just after Desert Storm. When he went to NCO Academy (in the 80's) he did a term paper on "The Feasibility of A Small Scale Nuclear Offense" His paper showed it as a favorable means in wartime. He got an A. Of course, my husband was just feeding the teachers what they wanted to hear...and that was "Hell yah Nuke them Frakers!"

This is actually pretty much accurate, some minor information is out of date or incorrect, but 99% of the video is perfectly true. People have just been over dramatised into fearing fallout through modern media which isn't accurate.

Comments are a bit harsh. I actually think it was quit informative, all things considering. Mostly factual things said, and advice for sensible precautions. Of course it's pretty optimistic about the whole situation, but what did you expect? That the department of defense told everyone: "In case of an attack, you are all fucked". I don't think any outright lies were said, and you have to remember the climate in which this video was made.

For the time, it was the standard. Hopeful that Americans could form a defense against fallout, was a part of the nation's nuclear weapons policy. Civil Defense was also a bit of propaganda to show how strong and prepared America was. Is it likely, knowing Thermonuclear weapons radiate massive areas, I doubt anything lives for long after a nuclear war...

@dwarfer777 Actually, in 1963, it WAS the office of civil defense. The office of civil defense was an office set up for educating the population and dispensing disaster preparedness kits during the cold war. After the cold war ended, the office was disbanded. Also, it IS the "Department of Defense" because that is the more grammatically correct way of saying it.

The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) was established in 1941 as an independent agency with no direct ties to the War Department. In 1961 OCD became an agency of the Department of Defense (formerly War Department). After having been re named the Defense Civil Preparedness Agency in 1972 it was abolished in July of 1979, its duties taken over by the Federal Emergency Management Association (FEMA).

The graphics and editing in this video are fantastic, especially for the era. You can tell some budget and effort went into this! Thanks for sharing! Edit: Oh god, the advice about the contaminated food, though. YIKES! It's interesting how little was known about non-human damages of radiation, or what effect radiation would have on non-living items.

This is true. But I think it's a good practice. In a nuclear attack event, if it hits a decent city, you are looking at a huge death tool, no matter how you slice it. Following safety procedures would not guarantee survival. But it's all about increasing your chances. Taking shelter is better than doing nothing. If all people have the: "I will die anyway" attitude, the number of deaths would be significantly greater, than if they at least attempt at saving their lives. And to increase the chances of people following good principles of protection, positive note is a must in such presentations.

@tomicdesu Did you watch the film? Most fallout is harmless within weeks. The long-lived radionuclides from the bomb material itself are too dispersed to be of much immediate danger. It's the neutron-activated blast debris that is dangerous in the short-term, and almost all of this is gone within a month.

@funnyasdeath Filtering water is neither necessary nor particularly useful. The fall out particles are like little specs of sand or glass and quickly sink and sediment out. They're not water soluble, there would only be a small amount of leaching of radioactive isotopes. If you had the means to filter water you would not be able to remove the radioactive salts formed through leaching without something like reverse osmosis(which is a waste of precious energy given the circumstance).

Yes they have what is called the scram button. You push it and graphite rods move into place stopping any nuclear fission. It would also do it automatically if any number of conditions occur. Also all modern reactors are set up in concrete containment buildings to further enhance their safety. Chernobyl was a careless Soviet set up that had few safety features. There have been unbelievable improvements over 3 mile island. Nuclear is exceptionally safe.

Because people don't actually live in the Chernobyl region currently. No not at all. Oh wait, they do. Yes they're exposing themselves to radiation, but they can still live there for decades. You're confusing dying at age 30 to 50 with completely unsurvivable That "shielding crap" is for the first few weeks so you don't get a massive amount of radiation all at once. Fallout is extremely radioactive /because/ it decays quickly. If you can survive the initial radiation you can live for years.

Not a bad presentation actually. I thought it was going to be all bullshit because it came from the government, and because it was from the 1960s. But it was actually pretty good. I don't know how informative the information is because I think a nuclear attack would be a lot worse and I don't know about radiation dissolving in water? And then there's the idea that my father put to me many years ago. A nuclear war is not something anyone would want to survive in. The conditions of survival would be appalling and horrendous and sanitation services would hardly even exist. Who would want to live in a world like that?

+eddie telleed Gamma and x-ray radiation is still ionizing and harmful in high enough doses (even naturally occurring), just like small amounts of 'internally ingested' alpha particles from the natural potassium-40 in bananas is functionally harmless. You made the point even as you missed it: "significant." Yes, this is trying to downplay radiation risks, but that's because at the time everyone assumed (and most still do) that /any/ radiation will kill you stone dead. If they're reminded of natural radiation sources, then they start making illogical distinctions between 'natural' and 'artificial' sources based on the naturalistic fallacy, kind of like you did. It's the sum total of radiation exposure and exposure rate that one has to worry about. Radiation /is/ something we have to deal with all the time--just nowhere near the magnitudes associated with atomics.
