The literal world building with the tiles is pretty cool. Reminds me of Forager but with a very different aesthetic.
@Acidfunkish2 жыл бұрын
Forager seems a lot more "fun," to me, though. There are some similar general ideas in both, but Forager makes the survival systems much less "punishing for the sake of it," IMO. I think they target vastly different audiences looking for different experiences, which is very fair. I'm not the kind of gamer to enjoy punishing systems that make a game seem more challenging, without actually being challenging. As in, they don't add anything extra to the gameplay loop, they just make playing more stressful. Novel concept, maybe, but I play games for "fun." 🤔

If you don't want deer peeing on your raspberry bushes, you should spray it with wolf urine. Of course, then it's coated in wolf pee. If you want to avoid pee altogether, you need to set a few claymores in nearby bushes with tripwires crossing likely paths of the deer. One gibbed deer will serve as a lesson to the others.

When I was a kid, I used to go into the woods when I visited my aunt to pick huckleberries. I would get enough to make a pie and it was the greatest thing to have and enjoy. The berries are very close to blueberries, but really flavorful. They can be hard to come by and aren't generally "grown" because they require specific conditions to flourish.

I don't know what it is but I really like the look of this one. When you placed the second level mine, though, the tracks were one tile off from the level 1 mine's tracks. That kinda drives me nuts. But it has a lot of promise. Thanks again, Splatt, for your fantastic coverage. Also, I really like the old west type feel. Snake oil, the opium ointment, train tracks, etc. Very interested. Keep up the fantastic work, my friend.

Thimble Berries are like raspberries in structure, though the plant looks very different and quite distinct. The taste is in the ballpark of raspberry, but much more tart, overall a much more intense flavor. Usually not eaten as a berry, though many do. I see it as a syrup or jam, sometimes mixed with other fruit as a jam. When they are unripe, that intense flavor can be a bit much, but while they are ripe and at their peak, the flavor is amazing, one of the most intense and best tasting berries in my book. If you want to try it at it's best, a thimble berry preserve would be the way to go.

One thing that irks me a bit (totally unimportant really but still) is the different placement of the minecart rails between the two mines, I'm hoping they will be slightly moved in a future update so that when you place two mines together like at 18:35, the rails seamlessly interconnect, giving a feeling of one large mine vs two separate mine-tiles

Speaking of clay: I'm over in Arizona, and in a lot of places here we have trouble growing stuff NOT because we don't get much rain (though that obviously doesn't help), but because so much of our soil is clay, and that isn't acidic enough for most plants. You really need to change the composition of the soil before growing stuff, but now I'm able to grow squash, melons, leafy greens, and pretty soon I'm hoping to add tomatoes and peppers to that list :D And yeah, the cacti in the game ought to be harvestable for water. That would be realistic. It would also be realistic if some of them could also be used for food or for crafting medicines. They should add aloe vera in the desert biomes, as well, which is very multifaceted. Perhaps there should be some more forgeables generally? There's a lot more edible and medicinal stuff out there than people realize (and some VERY NOT edible stuff), with of course there being different plants available depending on the biome. As for animals, there are some simple and effective traps that can be made before you'd be able to craft and wield a primitive ranged weapon- though speaking of that, a sling might be something you should be able to craft with fewer resources than a bow and arrows. It might not be as durable, accurate, or have as much range, but it's better than nothing usually :) As for iron, if you're starting from the ground up, there's a heck of a lot of other things you'll need to be able to do before you can do much with the iron which requires any forging. If you want to use bits of it as-is in weaponry, that could work, but so much other stuff has to be made before you can make the best use of iron. Though there are some things you can recycle for a make-shift forge, so you might not have to make something completely from scratch... Why yes, I have been reading a lot of books on survival recently, how did you guess? :P I don't know how detailed the developers want to get with the game, so perhaps some of my suggestions are a little too much, which is understandable. It certainly does look nice, though!

I'm not sure which mechanic they're using, but it would be nice if something like trees and bushes weren't single use resources. Trees should pop up in random places, just be very slow to grow, allowing for less logs from younger trees. I would not let the player break berry bushes, just take from them. Those berries should grow back as well, as I said, slowly. Any non-living node wouldn't need such mechanics, apart from maybe finding a little sparkle in a river for sifting gold. As Splat said, I would absolutely add a bit of blending between tiles, but I'd specifically look into the two mine tiles, and move the tracks so they connect... I played the original demo back when Splat first reviewed it. I loved the game, but didn't care for the fairly quick and inevitable death... It looks like that was nerfed a bit. lol

The reason why everyone is doing low poly now is because it's way cheaper than detailed 3D and there is a lot of pre-made assets that can be tweaked a little to look different. The key to success with this style is good textures, nice colour palette and some fancy shaders over that - and that's what many developers didn't grasp properly yet.
@lydellb2 жыл бұрын
It's an aesthetic that works in certain situations. I think some developers don't understand that the visual style itself doesn't add character to a game. It's gotta have soul.

Strange to see a western-theme game where the cacti aren't harvestable. In reality, some cacti are edible and others can provide water so they should be a great resource. Also strange that you didn't find coal or any type of metal ore on the mine tiles. I also would like to see the tiles blended together and even interacting a little bit. For example, if you put two railroad tiles together maybe the train joins together or one tile has a station and the other doesn't, etc.

The board game nature of this project makes for a game that relies on chewy choices for its central play direction. And it isn't there yet! Choosing which tile you want isn't a choice, as you can always pick what you need next without cost or care, and that's the only 'choice' you have thus far. And it isn't a execution-based game, as the zombies are just resource nodes. From what I saw so far, there are some awesome ideas here. And I love board game influences in video games. They let you explore ideas that would be too cumbersome for physical cards and pieces. But as it sits now, this game has no true gameplay yet.
