Trapt Review (PS2)

The story drove me absolutely ballistic. You've got a main character that's specifically told, "Yo, the more people you kill the closer you get to reviving the big evil. Come with us and we'll help stop it" to which she not only sides with the maid, who knows nothing of the curse in comparison to the sorcerers know of it and are offering to help her instead of kill her, and her brilliant idea of reading books. It was a toss up between that and the princess, knowing full well each corpse brings her closer to unleashing the ultimate evil, deliberately going out of her way to put herself in situations that will be hostile. Yes, let's go back to the castle where I'm wanted and there's plenty of soldiers who will try to kill me and force me to defend myself. I think the best way to describe my overall disappointment came from my favorite part. Which was a side mission. If memory serves there's the ghost of a teacher of hers that you run into, and there's a bit of backstory involved, and she ends up absorbing his spirit due to her curse. It's not a terribly powerful moment, but it was the first time we saw Allura actually observe the weight of the curse and her own fear of it. All in the form of a mediocre, unvoiced side quest that I didn't see until my second playthrough. Really well done, Aboveup. You get better with each video, and I really can't wait to see you talk about Deception IV (if you plan on it).

The forced localization from Alicia to Allura is so weird. Even as a kid unfamiliar with Japanese media I could tell the latter is not what the actors were saying.

Yeah... it's baffling to me why localization teams do this junk... I could understand if it was a blonde hair, blue eye girl with a name like Nagisa, but Alicia is a western name... why change it...? It's even more jarring to those of us that speak japanese....

Love these reviews. Like you said previously, there aren't many for these games, sadly. Hopefully you're doing Deception IV: The Nightmare Princess, too. It was my first Deception game (I had heard of the series, just never tried it) and it really blew me away, ended up becoming one of my favorite games of the decade.

Nightmare princess is fun, but I feel it overdid the Rube Goldberg machine angle, since it let you chain massive trap combos instead of slower trap combos. The kick is awesome though, I'd love to see Alicia kick people around in this game.

I considered using a song of theirs, but I'm not really familiar with their work and was kinda pushing it in terms of copyright with Trapped in the Closet already. When I saw Trapped in the Closet came out the same year, it had to go in.

At the time of release I enjoyed this game a lot despite its drawbacks, mainly because the graphics were better and the gameplay was snappy. Even then it was still plainly obvious that Deception 3 was the best in the series, and Trapt was an amusing diversion.

Yeah, it's a shame because I think if they just made the regular stages longer by giving you a lot more enemies, this one could be the best one in terms of main campaign.

Guess filler games can make a "good" stepping stone for polishing a specific part of the craft behind the concept... Well on the gameplay it seems... At least that's how it would feel if it didn't downgraded virtually everything. Also thanks for keeping my name despite the lackluster support on my part.

Trap was my first deception game I am happy that it is the worst one since I enjoyed it alot and knowing the other are better is great news

Imagine how good this could have been if they went full puzzle arcade with it. The more you play the more you unlock traps that can be used in any puzzle.

Outstanding review! I quite literally just discovered this series of games as an archetype of Yu-Gi-Oh! cards to which I'm partial (Labrynth) is inspired by them. Read the HG101 writeups and watched a gameplay video, which left me with a rather poor impression. Glad to learn that it's the game, not me.

It's interesting because years later they'd make a game actually called Deception 4: Blood Ties. And then a sort of sequel to that game as DLC that's pretty much a standalone campaign of its own, The Nightmare Princess. So there's 3 different Deception 4's at this point.

I loved this game. Played it randomly on ps3 actually. Was fun as hell. I hate tho, how deception 4 forces you to kill them in certain ways. I like killing freely damn it.

When I first saw the cover of this game I didn't know you were doing a Deception review. I saw the main character and "Trapt" and I thought it was a photoshopped cover about anime traps.

I noticed you didn't review Deception 4, or the expanded version with all the melee and barely any traps. Well, I think you probably saved yourself some disappointment, but the visuals were nice enough. I prefer Kagero overall because that game had huge hit combos if you had good timing. You can also pull off a combo where the first trap in the combo can be replaced and ready for the end of the combo if your cooldowns worked out, like how the vase trap draws out your combo timing.
