For those of you worried that Ryotaro had stopped in his mischievous attempts to kill me off, let this video offer you some reassurances. To celebrate Ryotaro’s three year anniversary since his Abroad in Japan debut, it seemed fitting to release this video this week! And for everyone else who’s wondering why this isn’t a Journey Across Japan episode - Ryotaro flew down to visit me halfway through my cycle near Yamaguchi so we could film this episode, and as the cycle route went nowhere near the places we wanted to explore we grabbed a car for the day. Journey Across Japan episodes are back later this week!

I actually took care of a patient with fugu poisoning when I was a med student at UCLA. He'd gotten a "to go" order of fugu sashimi before leaving Tokyo and consumed it on the flight over to LA. By the time the plane landed, he couldn't move and could barely breathe. We had no clue what was going on--he got a breathing tube put in and couldn't tell us he'd eaten fugu. So we did a huge workup to figure out he why he was paralyzed and not breathing, but everything like CAT scans, MRI scans, labs and spinal taps were normal. Eventually, we got the info about the sashimi consumption and just had to keep him on the ventilator until it wore off. Glad you two had a better experience with it than my patient!

In the past, many people ate fugu and died, so in 1598, the ruler of Japan at that time specifically prohibited people from eating them. However, people, especially people in Yamaguchi prefecture, didn’t stop eating fugu. In the Meiji era(1868-1912), the central government formally banned fugu cuisines and people in Yamaguchi prefecture had to give up eating fugu. However, one day the first prime minister of the modern Japanese government, Hirobumi Ito, visited Yamaguchi prefecture, and at the inn, he was served fugu for dinner, because the weather was so bad that the inn couldn’t offer any other fish. The inn keeper thought she would be punished for it, but surprisingly, the prime minister really liked it and complimented her on the delectable cuisine. After that, he worked to lift the ban on fugu cuisines and in 1888, the government finally legalized fugu-eating. from fugunohonba.jp/history/

I had fugu in a restaurant in Asakusa on a small shopping alley off the main path of the big temple. Spotted it while my friend was shopping in a store across the way and decided we were eating there whether she liked it or not. It was a great decision; I think it was a 6 course meal. One of the courses was shabu-shabu with every conceivably edible part of the fugu--still connected to the bone. Afterwards they used the shabu-shabu water to make rice and egg porridge. 10/10 would eat again.

I'm such a hypocrite. One minute: "Ohhhh, that sushi looks sooo fresh and taaasty." Next minute: "OMG that fugu fish is still alive nooooooo :'( " Such is the ethical dilemmas and mental mind games a pescetarian who should ethically be a vegan face... damn it, non-humans, why you gotta be so tasty. Why do I have to have empathy for them? Other than that, great video as usual!

If I'm not mistaken, they are kept alive until they are about to be prepared. At that point they then kill it by puncturing the brain. The movement afterwards is actually muscle spasms after death

@@NamiSwan96 I went to Japan and had Fugu with my sister. We saw it live in the tank, then when it was brought to our table, the severed head was still gasping for breath. I lack an adjective with which to describe that experience.

@@hib7295 Actually the comment was about the video. That is the whole point of youtube comment section, to comment on the video you just watched. You and the other person are just sad little insecure kids. The only comments that are not important here are yours, Nip 95 and now mine because the other ones are directly related to the video. Just because you two are so pathetic IRL doesn't mean you need to come on the internet to become fake punks acting like your opinions are the only ones that matter.

Wow, the quality of this video is just stunning. You really do pour your heart into your work. Beautiful scenery and cinematography. Although, I have to say... It feels cruel to see a fish being placed out of water alive and suffocating... And it looks like it wasn't dead when the chef began cutting into it, either. I hate that... Poor fish. :(

コンコン (Kon Kon) 🦊 Foxes (kitsune) are generally seen as one of the most important animals in Japan. Associated with the God "Inari". You'll pretty much always see white foxes (statues) at Inari shrines. There are a group of related Inari Gods representing fertility, rice, tea, sake, agriculture, industry, patronage and prosperity. White foxes can transform into other things like humans, animals or objects and when they reach 1,000 years old they will have grown nine tales and become a heavenly beasts. The more tales a fox has the more wise and mature it is said they are.
