NOTIFICATION SQUAD: What would you rather have?! Vending machine pizza or Okonomiyaki?! These are the big everyday decisions that make life worth living. I can't believe it's taken 6 years to make a video on Hiroshima! If you're visiting Japan, I always recommend it along with Tokyo and Kyoto as one of the big three. Particularly Miyajima, which is a pleasant island escape from Japan's hectic urban surroundings. A huge thanks to Ellen for joining me today and on the next few episodes of Journey Across Japan - it should be good fun living vicariously through her reactions to Japan!

I cant never forget the feeling when i visited Hiroshima, especially the peace memorial museum. There was a certain feeling that i cant describe with words when i saw the remains of the stuff left. Hey Chris! Thanks to this video I added Hiroshima to my trip and now, having returned, it was one of the best places I've been. I had the best ramen and gyoza there, and Miyajima was stunning. Unfortunately they started renovations on the main attraction right after this video so the gate is all covered up, but the shrine itself and the surroundings are amazing. I can also recommend the "folklore" museum to anyone who visits, it's on a quiet street to the southwest. There's some interesting history in there and a great place to just sit and rest a while. Momijidani park is also stunning, although we were so tired that we only saw a bit of it. If/when I return to Japan next, I might need to go there again.

There's no gloss and overdone production, with complicated production teams (I know this series is slightly different) or crazy drama. it's just one guy, making the best videos he can about his time in Japan, and getting better and better over the years. I had my first visit to Hiroshima last year and knew the Peace Museum was a must-visit, especially as an American. There's no way to properly explain the feeling I had as I went through the museum. I was expecting strong feelings, but I didn't expect to break down as soon as the second room. I was crushed. But I wouldn't ever take it back if I could - it's an essential teachable moment and something everyone in the world should experience once.

@@@grubbybum3614 The topic here is about the A bombings, that caused great human suffering. Not just for the victims but also for many future generations due to the radiation poisoning, What have they done to deserve this? why should the future generations pay? they are just like you and me, or your future children/grandchildren.. Yet I am not surprise to read you comment, I can tell you are an American . Because I have done enough research and read enough opinions on this topic and what I find is that most Americans justify this horrifying crime implying they (Japanese people) deserved it by bringing up other issues/topics. The other issues have place and time for discussion, but why ignore this one? And I haven't justified anything. Targeting civilian populations with nuclear weapons, for example in Nagasaki, where the bomb exploded above a school, is such an inhuman act. The intentional killing of civilians using nuclear weapons in truth is a war crime. The US also violated the Geneva protocol which prohibits the use of asphyxiating, poisons or other gases, materials or devices in wars. The bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki is a war crime, which the United States of America should have been tried for it. But then the winner writes the history. P.S I am neither a Japanese nor an American, Just someone who questions humanity.

Only in Japan could you have a box of free pizza cutters pointed out and not have them all stolen or have that drawer pissed/pooped in.

Admittedly my life has gotten away from me a bit and I have not been able to keep up with your uploads lately over the last couple months, but I am here a few days late to watch this one. I absolutely LOVE the way your videos are entertaining as well as educational. I love learning. I also cannot get enough of your voice, ever. It's so calming for my anxiety. I am so thankful for you doing what you do Chris. Thank you for just being you. You're a blessing.

Aaaaah I remember Miyajima before smartphones came along, its deer and oyster restaurants (there was one with oysters growing in a tank!) without tourists trying to get a selfie with an uninterested deer, all those yonks ago. Simpler and better times

I highly recommend staying one night in Miyajima. After the last ferry leaves, the islands gets super empty and it is really so much better. You can also wake up early to enjoy the island before the first ferry arrives. Great video btw!

I couldn't help but get a bit teary-eyed at the part with the Hiroshima Memorial Park. As an American, when I first learned about the atomic bombs we used and the millions of innocent lives, I was simply horrified. I'm 30 now and I still find it to be utterly unconscionable.

You do know what the Japanese did to British and American prisoners of war, right?
@akatorniirmer3698
@akatorniirmer3698 3 жыл бұрын
i think you might need some perspective, read about the japanese unit 731, the rape of Nanking, and the Japanese treatment of prisoners of war. Not only they didn't feel any remorsement back then but till this day many of them deny Japan having done any attrocities. Plus, consider this. mainland Japan would've been so hard to conquer that way more people would've died on top of prolonging the war. It was horrible but necessary. Thankfully, Japan is today one of the US best allies and a great friend. And let's not forget that there are millions of people in the US that love Japan with a somewhat concerning passion.
