Thank you very much, this helps me a lot. Now in quarantine period teachers throws us just lecture slides and expect us to understand directly. I sold my car to pay school tuitions fees and not understanding lessons where as you delivering us quality content for free, just cool.

I am sorry to hear about the troubles you're facing. I can understand the frustration of professors showing slides or explaining things minimally, since I've seen it happen even before the quarantine. But I am glad to hear that this helped you :) Stay safe, and keep your family safe. I wish you good health and the utmost success for you in your endeavors. Best of luck with your studies!

I dont know if this contradicts what you are doing, but what I have been taught to do is after getting the relation e.g Sa + Sb = 0, to then draw a free body diagram for each system and to assume the direction where the cable length increases to be positive. thank you for the video
@QuestionSolutions
@QuestionSolutions 3 жыл бұрын
There are many ways to solve these problems. I think its much easier to just pick the direction of your position coordinates to be positive, instead of going back and forth with positives and negatives trying to find which moves up and which moves down. It's completely up to you, but with this method, if you get a negative value, its opposite to the direction of your position coordinates, and if its positive, its in the same direction. Its a lot easier to keep track of. This also eliminates the need to draw free body diagrams since you said your method requires that as well. In the end, it's entirely up to you 👍

@@QuestionSolutions The only relationship I've seen so far is that, for frictionless pulleys and massless cables that can't be stretched, the magnitude of the _tension_ force along the two extremities of the cable is the same, and the magnitude of the _acceleration_ too.

could I theoretically have said Sa+Sb+(Sa-2Sb)=L for the first equation? Also your videos are incredibly helpful!
@QuestionSolutions
@QuestionSolutions 3 жыл бұрын
Hmm, no, because that doesn't account for the cable attached to block C. So Sa-Sb gives us a small section on cable A, if you subtract 2Sb, I am not sure what that accounts for, I guess 2 lengths of Sb from Sa, because you're "subtracting" the length of Sb from Sa. Also, since you only have Sa and Sb, you can't get the velocity of C. Usually, I think its a lot better to keep them as simple as possible, just a position coordinate per pulley. I am glad the videos are helpful :) Many thanks!

Hello! i wonder, i the case where we need 2 datum lines, does the datum line need to be in perpendicular all the times?
@QuestionSolutions
@QuestionSolutions 4 жыл бұрын
I think what you are asking is whether the datum lines need to be perpendicular to each other? If so, then no, it doesn't. The datum line is only a reference line to measure the distance from. If the "object" is going in the vertical direction, then we create a vertical datum line, and if it's in the horizontal direction, we create a horizontal datum line. In most cases though, the datum lines will end up being perpendicular to each other since they are either drawn vertically or horizontally.

in the third problem the length of cable from C to B doesnt change in length. You said earlier in the video that we dont need to account for unchanging lengths, so why do we account for it here?

It actually does change lengths. It's just hard to show it, but there is a small change as it's being pulled up since cable BC is wrapped around the big pulley.

At 5:03 you give the equation for pulley B’s cable length. Why Sb+2(Sb-Sc) instead of Sb+2Sb-Sc? I’m having trouble seeing where that second Sc term comes from.

So if you look you can see there are two cables between pully C and B. SB represents the length from the datum to pully B, so we don't have 2 of those cables. So it can't be 2SB. How can we determine the length between pully C and B? We can do that by subtracting the length of SC from SB. So the total length to pully B minus the length to pully C. You have 2 cables, so we get 2(SB-SC).
