Charmaine was our classmate in primary school, if briefly. Everything about her first day at school, accompanied by Rena and Fred, and her behaviour - memories of which stayed with me for 20+ years until she was “in the news” - should and almost certainly would trigger immediate major safeguarding intervention today. We have come a long way, even if we’re not there yet, 55 years later.

It isn't very logical to try and give the impression that Hazel Savage served the warrant on Fred and was the lead detective when she wasn't. And it should have been pointed out that Savage was removed from the case after approaching a literary agent, asking for a seven figure sum for a book deal. But then f*menism has no respect for historical accuracy.

This is a most disturbing documentary of how evil and vile people can be towards their fellow human beings. It is like a private holocaust..😱😱😱 If anyone deserves to burn in hell, then it is such people. It's easy to make assumptions about other people's family relationships, and how they process trauma or seek closure. Some of us see everything in black and white, good and evil; some of us see overlapping shades of grey, and human complexity. I for one don't see why any of Fred's family should feel guilty or disgusted by their surname. Why allow someone who has violated so many lives to violate your own name too? Why give them that power? "You've shamed the family name" feels like a pretty medieval way of dealing with the sins of others over which we ourselves have no control.

What an idiot cop that says "police can't keep things in case of future need" 🙄 that is precisely what they should do in cases where the case has collapsed and not that there has been a conclusion let's face it they could have done a LOT more.

I'm just glad that courts have Special Measures now to prevent a 13 year old (or kids of any age, or people with vulnerabilities) from having to go into a courtroom and give evidence in front of everybody - the defendant, the jury, everyone. Instead it's pre-recorded from a separate part of the court building or a different location entirely, do they're not having to go through that ordeal on top of what they already have

This is quite well depicted, but because it’s very short, it brushes over many details. I’ve read books and seen countless documentaries about this dreadful case and this is the quickest depiction and description of all the facts. I would recommend anyone who’s interested in getting more of an idea of these monsters and their hideous crimes , to watch a TV drama called “Appropriate Adult”. In my humble opinion, Fred West was mentally challenged, evil, but mentally challenged. Rose West, although abused in childhood was and is simply, pure evil.

We had a couple using a similar m.o. operating in Australia around the same time. Their final victim, who escaped, ran away naked, and found herself at a police station, was interviewed, discredited, and almost sent away by male officers, before a female officer became involved, and the couple were arrested, charged and sentenced. The female perpetrator is still alive. The male took his life in prison.

Fred was smart enough to have his own little Mr. Whippy (ice-cream van) business before ever meeting Rose. It is thought he started kidnapping (we know he kidnapped someone) and m*rdering girls (we don't know for certain) in that van. And he hit and k*lled a small boy. He was also the one who honed the "craft" of dismembering, and is most likely the one who took trophies and (very probably) canibalised them. I mean you've probably read this stuff in the books - but Fred was pure evil in the same vein as Rose. And I don't think she's any smarter than he was. He just doesn't have the more domineering character that Rose has, he was more demure and "pleasant" (personality-wise) and while he was the one to first introduce k*lling into their MO, she is the one who escalated the r*pe to more extremes, while he watched. It is thought that if it were to have gone on, she would have turned on him. She was jealous, cold and vindictive. Happy to throw anyone away to save her own skin. I just think because of their personalities that it's easier to see the evil in her. Fred was called a "likeable guy," she was never called a likeable woman. I think this idea that he was just a dim witted guy who was easily manipulated, comes back to this misogynistic idea that it's always a womans fault, like we see when people are talking about the case of Chris Watts. They both drove each other in these crimes. They're both as smart and evil as each other.

I couldn't help but think of the Jack The Ripper murders throughout this documentary. One element is common throughout all of these events - poverty. Many times, the victims had little option to leave - in the case of the daughters, or avoid going home with the Wests in the case of the ladies procured while walking the streets. One of the daughters was a job away from surviving, and starting a new life. Some of the victims who escaped had led such awful lives anyway, that they expected to be mistreated throughout life, and were just grateful to get away, without the ordeal of going to court. The brighter students didn't have money or life experience, which left them no better off. Like Jeffery Epstein, the Wests knew where to find victims, and how to exploit them. There are thousands of psychopaths born into the world every year. - They have no genuine feelings for their fellow human beings. - They are just born that way. Society tells them that they should care for others, so they learn to pretend to have emotions in an effort to 'fit in.' It's important that parents speak candidly to their children about these issues, because being a psychopath isn't illegal. Acting on bad impulses and getting caught is. Harvey Weinstein enjoyed a very good life for many years - as did Rolf Harris and Jimmy Saville. Talk to your children. Tell them about all the wonderful people - like focussed, determined police women - who will look out for them, and come to their aid, however when they are old enough, educate them about paedophiles and psycopaths. Pre-arm your kids. Give them the skills they need to survive and thrive in the world.

Couldn't agree more with what you say but it makes me desperate to think it's all preaching to the converted. Lack of awareness, poverty and lack of choices will continue to go hand in hand, inevitably creating new victims (((((

Wow. This was a mych deeper dive than anything I'd heard or seen previously. I've watched a lot of true crime but this really disturbed me. Some cases stay with you more than others, Gannon Stauch, Harmony Montgomery, Tyre Nichols and now this. Not that any crime victim is less important, it's just some resonate more for reasons I cant personally explain. What a swathe of devastation. The utter horror of what these children, girls and women endured is unfathomable. 😞

If they were politicians everyone would know about it but nothing would be done about it. And I think that's the reason they release those kind of people back out on the streets again against the people's wishes even though they know that sexual preferences can't be "cured".
