I was reading a book the other day by a woman who lived in their stomping ground. She narrowly missed being abducted as she decided not to take up Rose West request to get in her car with some story of being a make up girl or model (some such nonsense). Thank god her gut told her not to go and she lived to tell the tale.

It is sad though, isn't it? When we are young, most of us are not steered toward reporting what could be a dangerous person. We just wipe our brow and are thankful we made the right choice. My greatest hope is our sharing these stories will teach us all when it is important to share our experiences with the people who can make a difference. As much as it is important to educate those in positions of power how damaging such abuse is for their victims. Why, they need to stop showing pity for sadistic abusers through weak sentencing and early release from prison. I am so happy, she was taught to not trust strangers, even friends too much. I knew better too but sadly, they left out the part that your abusers could be the people living in your own home. Or other members of your family. I can imagine they didn't go far enough because of the threats abusive parents put onto educators and law enforcement. Abusers will not hesitate to bully anyone who dares to threaten their opportunities to commit crimes. I was also afraid of my abusers hurting my friend whose family tried to help me when they suspected I was being abused. This is how the brain washing works. They convince you that every bad thing that happens to your siblings, your pets, happens because you are resisting their demands. You try to protect those you love by sacrificing your own wellbeing. It is a horrible existence.

@@paulinemakepeace4582 Thank you for sharing the book title. My instincts when I was younger were a bit clouded because of the years of abuse and religious training. Even therapists missed the pattern I was following unconsciously. Though therapy did help me focus on myself so I could recognize the dangers of forgiveness. It is a good rule to follow except when it isn't. There are instances where you might forgive, if it doesnt lead to more abuse but if or when it does? I had to pick up a lot sooner knowing when to walk away. Don't look back. I say religion because I was misled. Instead of forgiving abuse, leaders, influencers, should have directed me to prosecute my abusers. By not doing so, I carry this guilt and I left others vunerable to abuse. It was a mistake. I am not beating myself up for it but mistakes followed throughout life that some clarity would have helped my family. People tell us to not to be paranoid or don't worry about it. Too much that interferes with you making good contributions in life, yes. Ambition is good. Some risk can be rewarding. But to toss caution to the wind when the risk is high or rash decisions? Not good. It might be a sad reality but once you have heard enough sad stories and cautionary tales? It feels too inhuman or selfish to ignore the part we all should play, at some level, to ease the suffering, promote safety for others. I say, sure, I can forget the abuse. To me though that is discounting the suffering of others. As well as the work many people in my childhood did that saved me from my worst nightmares. Humph..my adult daughter stated abusers should get a second chance. As if my brothers and I did not try this as children only to be further betrayed. They used our love for each other to abuse us more. Oooh..it makes me so mad. I cannot forget those sad little faces of abused children. It hurts but reality is some people care very little about the truth if it doesn't fit the view they want to be their reality. Cases like these are important to me. I guess a part of me had to know why do people choose to be this cruel? Most of all for me it is a teaching element to help me recognize bad people. It has motivated me to work with young children.. In part teaching them social skills to help peacefully resolve conflicts and bad emotions. And give them lots of hugs and encouragement. This is what my father's family gave to me and the dream of escaping my abusers so I could return to them kept me alive. Missing me is what made my grandmother and aunts push my father to get a court order to take us away from our abusers forever.😊

One of the reasons why Rose's case is an important study is why we have a duty to keep informed about Child Protective Agencies. It was one of the children's conversations about abuse that brought back Social Services. This compounded by their missing child. The case worker should not have had to fight this hard to make progress in her investigation. More of those children could have been murdered had she not been so dedicated to her work. I am interested in most abuse cases because even we as victims, were not encouraged to prosecute child abusers. As children, we must depend on our parents, other adults to plead our cases for us. The Stature of Limitations did not work because abused children were not informed of their legal rights to prosecute an offender as an adult. It has made abusing children very attractive to a certain kind of criminal. I finally reached an age when I recognized I was a part of the problem. So, now, before I expire, I want to be a part of the solution. Sadly, we cannot be in everyone's homes. We can however educate the public, children about the dangers of child abuse. Push our legal system to investigate to their fullest capacity allegations of abuse and prosecute, with sentencing that fits the crime. Make sure survivors know and have a safe refuge to escape further abuse. Siblings too if the crimes are abusive. Violating a child is a heinous crime. It should be treated as such. Repeat offenders should not be released back into our neighborhoods. We send out our children to school, to play, for errands and sometimes back into terrible homes. For us to be able to help our children develop into happy, productive human beings, it is our duty to provide them with a safe community to accomplish all of that. Predictors should be afraid of us. Not the other way around. A child should not have to be murdered to get our attention that they are suffering from abuse. We can save these children's lives if we educate them about safety and our legal system must stop putting these...criminals back into our neighborhoods. It is wrong to confuse mistakes with choices to purposely harm a child.

I did child psychology as part of my teaching degree. Children who grow up in abuse can sometimes ( not always) become desensitised & see it as a norm they model & repeat. It's also sometimes an attempt to take back their lost power & avoid their victimhood. Rose was also born with mild brain damage due to her mother having electric shock therapy when 8 months pregnant. Psych studies have shown there are proven links between brain injury & violence, lack of empathy & poor impulse control. Further studies into this are ongoing.

@sarahholland2600 Regardless, she had free will and could've chose not to murder or abuse. As you've already stated, many children who were abused grow up to become decent members of society. There's never and excuse for this type of behaviour unless a person is truly insane and unaware of what they're doing.

@@lyrickoner Rose had a very low IQ & brain damage. We dont know her true mental competence to be honest. I did read that after Fred was arrested & until she was also arrested, she started behaving & dressing oddly & regressed to odd, childlike behaviour, watching cartoons 24/7. The most recent psych study on every serial killer on Death Row found 96% had at least 3 of the following: childhood abuse, mental health issues, bullied/socially isolated, head injury resulting in personality change( the brains frontal lobe controls empathy, impulse control & emotions). Both Fred & Rose West had all 4 of these factors.

Growing up, we were hit with my stepdad's belt, I wasn't sexually abused, but we did go through mental abuse by our mom and physical abuse by our stepdad. Back then, no one ever said anything. My brothers and I didn't grow up to be sexual predators, mentally or physically abusive to our kids. The only one of us that suffered a brain injury was my brother that was a year younger than me, he had a few football concussions and he fell off his skateboard and hit his head on a curb, he was taken to the hospital, but he didn't suffer any long-term brain damage.

I agree, too - this programme totally fails to mention well over half of the essential information that is involved in this very complex case that covers a span of more than 20 years. This documentary is pure sensationalism, which I think serves absolutely no justice to the many, many victims, plenty of whom are still alive today. There is a book called 'Happy Like Murderers' by Gordon Burn, which gives a real indepth look into the lives of Fred, Rose, and their families & crimes. It's very traumatising and complex, well worth reading. Also, Anne Marie West has given a couple of interviews and also written a book - it's called 'Out of the Shadows' & is way better than the book her half sister, Mae West, wrote. Mae stood by her mother after the crimes were exposed & her book is just a poor selection of parts of letters written between herself & her mum, Rose, whilst Rose was in prison. It gives the impression that Mae still hasn't absorbed or accepted the reality of her parents crimes & abuse against her and her siblings, Whereas Anna, she suffered the majority of abuse from Fred & Rose and her eyes are wide open; I have upmost respect for Anne Marie West. She tells the truth as best she can about her unimaginable childhood. This documentary, though, It's a massive fail for me: it leaves out far too much information & it's just insulting and sensationalist.

Rose's refusal to come clean about all of the crimes proves her involvement as well as her selfish nature, which could have been learned from her father. He convinced her she was special. She built her self esteem on his words and the evidence of how powerful she was because of her loyalty to her abusers. I say that because mum allowed it to carry on. No doubt in part of the church message, you bought it,it is your problem now. This bullpucky has greatly enabled abuser and motivates them to hook up with the naive girls.

@@iamlost2 You are asking for an entire study of someone who became so sadistic, she forced her daughters to participate in their horrible crimes as victims. How does one build their self-esteem, as a child who is used by her father? First, in her mind, she was taught that behavior was not wrong. Second, she was given positive reinforcement for engaging in that behavior that was denied her other siblings. Third, she continued to use this bad behavior to get what she wanted out of life. Did she know it was wrong? A part of her did. Another part of her had reached the point that she didn't care. Hurting others satisfied her need to act out in part how she was taught to behave. Because she benefitted from her actions. Some, physically. Others in the ability to control others who she could dominate by exploiting their weakness. How do I know all of this? Guess? Besides reading many articles, interviews of her case, I have experienced this with another woman very much like her but who did not reach the horrific level Rose did because she only had one daughter to sacrifice and my father was not her accomplice. This woman murdered to achieve her goals. She murdered a young child who she knew was a threat to her intent to use and abuse those she gained control over. Later, even now, her devious nature, her inner self-worth is so great, you can call that conceit, that she chooses to not reveal every terrible thing she had done to so many innocent people. She is one angry woman. She is so mad her control over her evil husband failed her. Some of her children betrayed her. She was so sure, her husband would take all of the blame leaving her free. A madwoman indeed. For the rest of her pitiful existence.

The man was too conceited to just end his life so easily, without a fight. No, I must object to this theory. Fred murdered before Rose did. They really just used each other. Both, I believe in their own minds thinking each controlled the will of the other. They just operated on different wavelengths. Part of the theory is that Fred committed some crimes without Rose's involvement. Rose definitely abused her children and others when Fred was away at work. The decision to murder I have little doubt was a joint conclusion. Just as the crimes being committed were taking place mostly as a joint venture. Fred's original plan was to take the rap so that Rose could support him from the outside. He believed their bond was solid. When Rose spurned him in court? The message was clear. She would betray him thinking it would save her own skin. He knew she was the only person who might love him. Without her? He was only just a miserable pig, unable to get his, "needs" met. A sick tale indeed.

There was another doc about younger age of fred and rose, fred had been married to anither prostitute, Anne-Marie was his daughter with that previous wife, but she had her own daughter which she left with Fred when she left. I think the girl’s name was Cheryl, also i m not sure anymore. Rose started with fred and was looking after them. Fred was at some point serving time for theft or robbery, so while he was doing time she killed his daughter when she was 10 years old. He also had killed his lover who became pregnant while married to his first wife

I take issue with yhe presenter calling Rose west as "born bad". I believe Rose West was born with mental health problems, compounded by sexualized violence from a young age. If Rose was brought up by nurturing, loving and caring parents she just might have turned out normal, rather than as the most extreme evil serial sexual saddist serial killer 🤔

@@chickenlover657 i do believe people may be born with some psychological disturbance and the breaks are taken off to a certain extent. So you have a valid point. Nonetheless, Rosemary West grew up in a violent and incest ridden home. This background (the lack of a gentle, stable, nuturing environment) genuinely facilitated and engendered her psychopathy to grow and flourish. The environment in her early years when the brain is developing were so nefarious the gun was loaded and ready to shoot by the time she met Fred. That's all I'm suggesting

How many times in UK crime stories do you here that the police and social services didn't act on cases till sometimes years later and in this case 5 long years, how many lives might have been saved if they'd have got off there backsides and acted when they were first informed of the young girls disappearance instead of saying she might just have run away. There an absolute waste of tax payers money and our time !

@@pennyc11 I don't know how 'fen' is better than 'ven', if thats supposed to be verging towards a more fonetic name, but if the spelling is Stephen, then surly the proper pronunciation aught to be 'Step - hen'. A 'P' and a 'H', doesn't make an 'F' sound any more than it makes a 'V' sound. Note: I realise I speled fonetic with an 'F', as if there's only ONE word that aught to be spelled fonetically, it's the word 'fonetic'. Cheers! 🍺😁👍

@@skepticusmaximus184 Phone, pronounced fon. Phonics, pronounced fonics. It all depends on your vocabulary. Phantom, physical, philosophy, New Test written originally in Greek, Phillip, Phillipines, Philadelphia it goes on and on. The real issue is how do you get the "e" sound? st"e" fen? If you ignore the second e to make the hard sound the second vowel would be silent. Like in phone. It isn't pho ne.

This woman kept saying that she wanted to find out why rose was the way she was but she didn't investigate her childhood. how she was in school, with you other kids, with her siblings. She talked a little bit about how roses dad was but never even mentioned the fact something was wrong with Mommie Dearest as well. Because while she was pregnant with roses she received electric shock treatments which very well could explain why rose was slow. She didn't mention that her mother molested her as well. I'm sure she was jealous of Rose because she had Daddy's affection so maybe she beat the crap out of her as well. so what was wrong with she just went quickly from being molested by her dad to sixteen-year-old desiring elderly men. she had to watch her siblings get beaten. And then she says she's a mother and she just can't wrap her head around how Rose treated her kids. Of course she can't, she didn't live the life rose had. Listening to her cold stoic voice and her attitude I doubt that she has any empathy for anyone.

@@PH-vv1ky I've heard a little about it but not very much. My brother was so traumatized he said he was just so afraid of being abused as I was. Some he couldn't imagine. I was so terrified of everyone who was an adult. I really felt if I told about the abuse, they would confront my abusers, who of course would deny everything and force me back into their home to pay the consequences for talking. It was terrifying, knowing an adult was waiting for the opportunity to totally assault you every night when you are eleven and twelve years old. As well as hearing your mother yell at you that you deserved it. The level of betrayal is fierce. It was my older of the two brothers who used drugs to destroy his mind. Another casualty of our mother's evil intentions. All of this so she could have her nice home. Nice life. How she was able to twist seeing her children tortured and abused equated to a nice life? Well, I lived it . I escaped it at a young enough age for my father's family to help repair the damage they caused me. Sadly, they were too ignorant, even stubborn, to help my brother get the help he needed to learn how to cope with the nightmares that come from years of abuse. Sadly, I didn't know the answers either in how to help him. I thought giving him a safe place to live was enough but it wasn't. I only hope someone who knows their sibling is suffering mental anguish can steer them towards Behavioral Therapy. What happened to me is painful. He carried so much pain and guilt that I couldn't remove with just words of forgiveness. He loved his mother so much. Her betraying that love by condoning our abuse. Trying so hard to convince us how bad we were but we weren't. Messed with our minds so badly. What our mother did to my brother? Unforgivable.
