Russian GM Valentina Gunina plays a sharp, attacking game against French GM Marie Sebag. In this video I am analyzing that game where Gunina sacrifices her pieces one after another. By choosing the Keres attack against Sicilian Najdorf Gunina launches a pawn storm and with a provocative knight sacrifice invites her opponent to enter the jungle of "endless complications". Sebag fails to play accurately and once she makes a mistake Gunina's attack becomes irresistible and soon Black resigns in view of an imminent checkmate!

H7 seems best alternative. Response can be Rgf8 which prevents Rf8 move but it can be countered by Bd6. A random move after h7 can lead to check mate in 3

Puzzle answer: 1. Qg6 (threatens mate) fxg6 2. hxg6 Bc8 (protects the 7th rank) but the follow up starts (3. Rxg8+ Kxg8 4. f7+ Kf8 5. Bd6+ Qe7 6. Bxe7+ Kxe7 7. Bb7 or Bd7 is pointless because of the move h7 8. Rh8 blocks but g7 is winning.) Back to move 2: 1. Qg6 fxg6 2. hxg6 (if 2......Rxg7 then 3. hxg7+ Kg8 4. f7#) 2..... Be8 prevents f7 but still the same outcome 3. Rxg8+ Kxg8 4. f7+ either Bxf7 or Qxf7 is loosing (4. f7+ Qxd7 5. gxf7+ Bxf7 6. b6 is winning. Wondering why many says "1. h7" is a triple threat on the rook. h7 move leads to Rf8. 1. h7 Rf8 2. Rg8+ Rxg8 3. Either Qxg8, hxg7=Q+, or Qg7 for white is loosing because there's no follow up move for mate. So the answer is: 1. Qg6 fxg6 2. hxg6 Be8 3. Rxg8+ Kxg8 4. f7+ Qxf7 5. gxf7+ Bxf7 6. b6

Qg6 and if pawn captures then hxg6 and there is no defense against checkmate. For example if Rxg7 then fxg7+ and after Kg8 h7 is checkmate

1. White H7 2. If black Rock F7 3. White Qg5 4. Black move Pd5 or black Qc8 5. White Qh6 6. Black Rf8 or any move 7. If black moves Rf8 on above step then white Ph7 x G8 then it will be a double check mate

After moving away the rook with, for example, Rgc8 there is no clear path to victory, g8 is well protected and white can't promote. Instead, Qg6, with direct mating threat in 1 forces black to do fxg6. Then h5xg6 renews the threat of Rh7#. Black is forced to move the rook in g8. If Rxg7 then hxg7+, Kg8, f7# If Rc8, then f7 and whatever black does, Rh7# (with double check). Black can only postpone mate 1 move with Rc1+, but after Ka2, it's over.

Best move would be Qg6. Response need to be f7xQg6 as Q threats a mate on h7. After our Q captured we go with pawn h5xg6. Response Rg8xRg7 , because Rg7 threats a mate on h7. We can then checkmate with pawns. f6xRg7 check, K to g8. h6 to h7 checkmate. Pawn to h7 need not be a good move as the whole thing can be ruined by Q to c6

h7, . no other move. if black RxR white QxR cmate. if black bring the Q at 8s for support, pxR check (queen promoted) black QxQ, then white has pieces advantage and black king is pinned down.

Let's see, for the chess puzzle at the end, how about white moves H6 to H7. To avoid immediate checkmate after trading the first of the rooks, black needs to move the queen B7 to C8, because B8 is no good as it gets taken by the bishop. Then I guess white takes the rook on G8 with the H7 pawn, promoting to a queen. Black needs to take it with the queen as that is the only legal move, C8 to G8, and then white takes the queen with the rook G7 to G8, then black takes the rook with A8 to G8. And then white gets the queen out of there, maybe G4 to F4 to then threaten checkmate on queen F4 to H6. Black has to then move the king forward 1 and leave the rook there, completely paralyzing itself to avoid immediate checkmate I think. I think checkmate is still maybe a few moves away after that though. It's not checkmate exactly, but in any case white is then up some material, as white has a bishop and a queen and 6 soon to be 5 pawns albeit pawns in terrible doubled up positions, while black has a rook a bishop and 4 pawns, but there's no way black can defend with what's left of itself, it's basically rook vs queen but with some pawns on both sides. I don't know if you have some exact checkmate sequence in some small number of moves but I don't really see it.
