This is one of my favorite violin concertos. I've listened to bits of it on flute before and sorely missed the power, finesse, and timbre of the violin. I missed the tearing, savage sounds and the intensely quiet, fade-to-nothing tones. This time, though... Pahud. This is a rip-out-your-soul performance. I could immerse myself in this forever.

Lovely and technically-accurate playing. My preference is for a more relaxed and playful tempo in the finale, otherwise too many nuances and compositional "turns of phrase" are lost in the brouhaha. No need for brass to over-blow like that (horns, I'm talking to you with your bells up!) in a flute concerto. Also, the only interaction (as fake as it is) is when Pahud is NOT playing, because his head is buried in the music. Do you know this music or not? Fast is not always best. Maybe the Russian is to blame? : ) But, overall, an amazing feat.

It's interesting because I was thinking the contrary. The breath taking was less compare to other flutists especially at the second MTV. On the first one the short repeated breath takings was intentional to keep perfect the articulation with dynamic staccato. If you take the time to compare with others flutists you will see that he is the one with less breath taking with also the legendary Rampal. That piece is asking a lot physically to the solo flutist if you want the last row of the crowd to catch also the beautiful vibring low notes. Just few could do it in the history of the flute. Respect Master Pahud!

@@alhdgysz Interesting comment, considering the music was never written for the instrument you're making a judgement on.
@alhdgysz4 жыл бұрын
@@DavidA-ps1qr nope. Galway has a lot of tension, no mobility on the lips, closed up throat. You cannot make different tone colors with this setup and the tone is thin. On the other point: this is part of the canon (many pieces in our canon transcribed from other instruments) and is one of the most demanding pieces. So there is nothing which can make the comparison invalid. Even himself played this piece. (With some modifications, because he cannot play Rampal's edition)
@kated284711 ай бұрын
Yeah Galway has never had the technique to even touch this guy. Those saying missed notes whatever have zero idea of what this guy has accomplished. He is, in my opinion, the greatest flautist of all time, better than Rampal. His intonation is stunning, his tone quality is exceptional.
