It really is impossible for food addicts to have just a tiny bit. For me, when I do that, I start to binge, so I have to stay away from it 100%. I'm really struggling right now because I've been binge eating for 7 days now. That's why I'm trying to find a video that will help me.

I had just over 2 weeks, and slipped. Yep, one bite of sugary item, my addiction, set me off. I'm doing one HOUR at a time today, and have almost made it to end of day that way. However, it's not about diet or weight loss to me. It's about my insane behavior when I'm binging . THAT is why I practice sustenance.

Glad she shared this. A lot of people on KZbin talk about “don’t restrict yourself. Have one cookie and don’t go back” well with food addicts, it’s different and we want the whole pack all at once: so in a lot of our cases it’s best to stay away from foods that trigger us in any way. My thing is carbs. Refined ones @ that. My main thing is just trying to get that healthy relationship with food and know when to say “no.” Don’t even get me started on calorie/point counting🤦🏾‍♀️🤦🏾‍♀️🤦🏾‍♀️

Hi iamhida, You are so right, some of us cannot eat just one! It sets off an allergy and we can't stop! I don't eat any of my trigger foods, ever, because I know the consequences, food h@ll! I don't think of it as restricting. I eat moderate, healthy meals in reasonable portions. If I need help with that by weighing and measuring my food that's the least I can do for the freedom I now have. No food is the boss of me any longer, one day at a time! All the best to you on your journey iamhida. Nancy D., Gratefully Recovering Food Addict

I just want to say thank you so much for sharing this video with us..this is the only other time Ive heard someone say to treat trigger foods like an addictive substance and abstain from them completely. Everyone else always says "learn to have a little" and I would always feel so angry with myself that I couldnt just stick to a little or be satisfied with it. Thinking back, the first time I heard this advice I thought it made perfect sense but also thought it was a bit extreme. Turns out he and you are 100% right though. Its tough to accept that I wont be able to eat any of my favorite foods ever again. But time and time again in the past has proven that it's the way to go. Addicts don't dabble in a "little", they abstain.

I agree completely Art With Mari! Certain foods are a drug to my body! They would never dream of telling an alcoholic or drug addict to go ahead and have a little snort once in a while! No! The reason we tackle this one day, one hour, and sometimes one minute at a time is we may feel too overwhelmed thinking, I can never have this or that ever again. I'm in control of what I put into my mouth these days! The food is not the boss of me anymore once I get it out of my system through detox. I no longer crave or obsess over my 'alcoholic' foods, a true blessing for me and now I don't even want those foods anymore because this life is so 'sweet' without them, I never want to return to food hell again! Don't quit AWM before your miracle happens too! I'm pulling for you!

No one will understand this terrible silent addiction. It’s such a shameful addiction. I walk around with this guilt. I am terrified of staying overnight for extended periods of time at anyone’s place, as I don’t want them to find out my weakness. I am also afraid that for whatever reason had I tried drugs, I would have been a drug addict too. Oh it’s a horrible horrible pre-disposition. 😭😭😭😭😭😭

It is horrible to be addicted Drake! But there is hope, there is a solution! oa.org Overeaters Anoymous is a really great place to start! You'll find helpful people in the meetings that know exactly what you're going through and people that can share how they have dug themselves out of food hell! I also reccomend OA meetings that study the Big Book of Alcholic Anoymous, I substute the word food with alcohol and compulsive eater with alcoholic and I can easily identify! Alcholics give up alchol and I give up my "alcholic foods" (foods I can't control eating) one day, one hour at a time! Reach out for help Drake and start living the life you're meant to live! Related to the video, thank you for sharing. I’m looking into OA and food addiction recovery because all “dieting” has done is walk me right up and over 400 lbs. It’s now affecting my health and my physical ability to do even the most basic of tasks. I just ordered the books from Kay that you recommended. I am optimistic about this journey. Thank you for your channel and videos. They’re so helpful for those of us struggling.

Thanks so for your kind comments! Your name, Chasing the Immaculate..I'm wondering if perfectionism is a problem for you? I drove myself crazy thinking if only everything were perfect I would feel ______(fill in the blank). I hear you, with the best of intentions I dieted my way up to 300 lbs and remember how debilatating it was! I felt hopeless and helpless but there is always hope! I study the Big Book of Alchohalics Anoymous in OA meetings and find it very helpful! I learned I have an allergy of the body to certain ingredients in foods and in turn that set up the obsession of the mind. Just as an alcholic must put the alchohol down to live a sane life I have to put down my "alcholic foods" to live a sane and happy life! Oh, it took me decades of misery to finally quit my drugs of choice, sugar, flour, & refined foods, I thought I could solve my food problem another way, I just hope it doesn't take you as long as it did me to come to the sulution to my food hell! A good place to start is at avision4you.info you'll find podcasts from people just like us that have found a solution, one day at a time. The speakers are regular people just like you and me sharing their experience, strength, and hope with food addiction you'll hear the encouragement you need! P.S. It's not the food so much as I was abusing food to medicate myself, to face life. My life is soooo much easier now without my addictive substances, not perfect by a long stretch, I'm only human, but I am happy, joyious, and free from addiction!!! I'm pulling for you! Let me know how you're doing! Love, Nancy D., GratefulFoodAddict@gmail.com

Thanks for your video! It's given me inspiration to start meal prepping again (as that was what worked for me best in the past). I thought I had "beat the system" by creating my own version of Intermittent Fasting--namely, having a tiny breakfast and skipping lunch so I could afford to pig out at dinnertime, while still staying under my calorie budget. However, being the Food Addict that I am, it took me nine months to realize that this method wasn't working for me--it wasn't healthy (I regained more than half the weight I'd lost), and it fed into my addict mindset, as I became utterly obsessed with my daily BIG MEAL, to the point that my life revolved around it. It's time to go back to what worked--meal prepping, keeping my portions reasonable, and working my program so I can get to the roots of my eating obsession.

I'm never hungry....loving life 💚 (Eggs, yogurt, cottage cheese, dairy milk.....are NOT nutritious!!!!) Try to eat raw as much as possible. Peer pressure Dolores! It just takes lots of patience! After all, how many times have they heard you had given up this or that food only to find you going off the diet again? Some food ‘pushers’ may be jealous that you are strong enough to resist but the majority of people just have no clue about food addiction! You need to be consistent and have some simple phrases to repeat like, I don’t eat sweets, I’m not hungry, or I feel better eating healthy! No need to go into long explanations. If you suspect someone is a fellow food addict and they are truly interested in talking to you about it, schedule a separate time when you can talk privately, or invite them to go to a meeting with you! Even though it feels frustrating sometimes, just think of the great example you provide. You’re showing it is possible to put down ‘alcoholic’ foods and that there is the hope of getting out of food hell! Stick to being constant and eventually, people will back off, it just takes time (with some, a lot of time) and patience Dolores! All the best to you in your recovery journey! I tell them straight up that I'm a sugar and flour addict, and need to avoid that food like the plague. Just like an alcoholic needs to avoid alcohol. "So asking me to eat sugar, is like asking an alcoholic to drink alcohol" Then I tell them that sugar is more addictive than drugs. It makes us fat, tired, and sick. Plus it prematurely ages us. I don't see any need hiding it, or keeping it on the down low, trying to fit in with all the other unhealthy people. NOBODY who cares about their health, or their body, eats sugar! They should all know. Why not? Once you've explained it, they won't ask again so soon 😁✌

(Watch 'Forks over Knives' it's such a great documentary - I recommend it ONLY because the exact same thing happened to my husband) Peace and Love 😎✌🌱🔆💚

This was so helpful I downloaded the two books and I am reading them with voiceover since I am legally blind. I am going to try the food plan today. I have been on low-carb for a long time So I think I might struggle with adding the carbs but also wonder about the book being over 20 years old and not reflecting current research but totally related to the fasting overeating cycles.

Hi Whitney! Kay’s books are good at explaining food addiction so we can better understand how our bodies react to our “alcoholic” foods. The food plan has been updated slightly from her books and can be found at KaySheppard.com. The plan now has a starch at lunch so lunch and dinner have the same food components. Also, only steel-cut oatmeal, oat groats, and oat bran are used as the other oatmeals are too refined. Legumes are no longer counted as a protein but as a starch only. All artificial sweeteners are out except saccharine, as all artificial sweeteners are derived from sugar and keep the allergy of the body active, but don’t use saccharine either if at all possible! The “carbs” on the plan consist of whole grains, (not refined flours) and starchy vegetables so may not bother you? I rotated cooked whole grains at breakfast and starchy vegetables at lunch and dinner like peas on my lunch salad and sweet potato at supper. It’s a lot of food on this plan so make sure and measure accurately! It’s a Mederatain type balanced, healthy food plan for the long term, not a quick weight loss fix. I’m not affiliated with Kay Sheppard in any way other than I lost 167 lbs following Kay’s food plan to the letter! The food plan is Step 0 of recovery there is much more! Go to as many OA meetings as you can and get yourself a Sponsor with good solid recovery! This quarantine is the perfect time to learn to take better care of ourselves! All the best to you Whitney and don’t stop before your miracle happens! Nancy D. Gratefully Recovering Food Addict

Then I will share my experience. No need to weigh food or count calories. We should be realistic and adapt a routine to last a lifetime. I persomally can't imagine doing this for the next 40 or 50 years. As a food 'additiv' addict, we should avoid: No animal products No flour/grain products No sugar products No manufactured foods *No oil *No coffee *No alcohol No eating after 6pm!!!!! I eat everything I want, as long as it falls within those parameters. I've lost 15lbs in 6 weeks. I'm never hungry....loving life 💚 (Eggs, yogurt, cottage cheese, dairy milk.....are NOT nutritious!!!!) Try to eat raw as much as possible. Right now my favorite dish is (all chopped up): 1) Cooked lentils 2) 1-2 cups cooked beans (any beans, navy, kidney, chickpea...) 3) Mango 4) Spinach 5) Red onion 6) Red cabbage 7) Red pepper 8) Tomato 9) Walnuts 10) Avocado Sweet potato can be eaten raw. So I make sweet potato sticks and eat it with homemade Hummus 🥰👍 Avoid all those manufactured chemicals. Try to stick to whole foods. 💚✌🌱

What about migration theory? Metabolism is negatively affected by restricting amount of food and food groups. Binges are also a consequence of restricting food/weight suppression? I've also lost 200 lbs that I gained due to being on tricyclic antidepressant medication and having complex trauma. Now I have a problem with a restrictive eating disorder and compulsive exercise. Even just listening to this video triggers me to further restrict my diet and move more. I had all kinds of physical symptoms related to nutritional deprivation including gastroparesis, osteoporosis, and hair loss. Those symptoms were much more serious than any health problem that was perceived to be the result of living in a larger body. In addition, the eating disorder threatens my life due to extreme depression related to body age/dysmorphia. The migration theory states that our bodies are cleaver. If a person deprives themselves of a certain food group that is what your body is going to push you to consume until you binge. Also, it states that a person's metabolism is negatively affected by restricting food and over exercising. The only way to repair metabolism is to eat without restriction while rewiring the brain to teach it that food isn't sparse, so there is no reason to put on fat and gain weight. I think diet culture is responsible for my eating disorder. No one needs to restrict what they eat if they are able to accept their body as it is. I'm happy for you if you think that this restriction has helped you. I just wonder if you have considered another alternative. Blessings.

How do you deal with social situations, vacations, other people bringing a variety of foods into the house, having to cook for picky eaters etc?
@GratefullyRecoveringFoodAddict
@GratefullyRecoveringFoodAddict Жыл бұрын
These are the challenges for a food addict in recovery! It takes strong determination, planning, and help from your fellows in recovery, family, and friends. It is OK to ask for help. "Could you go out for pizza and ice cream instead of eating my favorite foods, which I now know hurt me, in front of me?" Our loved ones are usually willing to help. Just as an alcoholic probably wouldn't go to a wine tasting. I don't attend social events if the focus is food. If I don't have a really good reason for being at an event I don't go. Vacations are varied, some you are in absolute control over the food, camping, etc., while others take research ahead of time, what will be available, is there a grocery store nearby where can I get the clean foods I need. Some types of vacations just might not work for recovery. I did visit a 3rd World country, prayed a lot about it and Higher Power came through! I had clean food that fit my meal plan on that trip. If people bring food into my home that I don't eat, I make sure it leaves with them after the event or absolutely destroy it in some way, immediately, we don't want it calling to us! If it is family foods in the house I don't eat, I designate it to a cupboard or draw in the fridge that I don't ever use. I don't have to be reminded each time I open a cupboard that my 'poison' is in the house. Picky eaters, it depends on the age but it's important for every family member to develop healthy food habits. have fruit and vegetable sticks available. Abstinence and recovery have to come first for us or there is no enjoying social situations or vacations because we can't see past the obsession with food to enjoy any of it! Now that I've written all this, I remember these are all issues your sponsor can help you tackle, one day at a time. Go to several OA meetings, find someone that has what you want, and ask them how they managed all these issues. Meeting listings at OA.org Please know, it is possible to navigate any life situation abstinently, don't quit before your miracle happens!. All the best to you, on your recovery journey Andrea! Very helpful. I am married to a Food Addict. Does anyone have suggestions of how to work this into family life? Do we all need to eat this way? Or are food restrictions just for the one person?
@GratefullyRecoveringFoodAddict
@GratefullyRecoveringFoodAddict 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Abra! Following Kay Sheppard's Food Plan is a healthy lifestyle for everyone in the family! When I was the person in my family to prepare the meals, my family would supplement with bread if they wanted at the meal, for example. If they felt like having a pizza night they would eat out. They would go out for ice cream and not bring any home. I felt left out at times but it gave them bonding time and I enjoyed some time to myself! We had a cupboard in the kitchen just for snacks, bread, and things that I don't eat. In that way, I didn't have to look at and sometimes be tempted at weak moments by my 'alcoholic' foods. One draw in the refrigerator was for snacks, leftover pizza, etc. I didn't have to see tempting foods every time I opened the fridge. It may help you better understand if you frame it this way, say your partner was an alcoholic instead of a food addict and had trouble controlling himself around alcohol, would you sit across from him at dinner having one of his favorite cocktails thinking, it's his problem, not mine? Well, some families would, some families would be more sensitive to the person with the life-threatening disease. My family knew how I'd struggled with giving up the foods that were hurting me and they helped in any way they could. Their considerate behavior was a great help to me in my recovery. After all, it was my home too, I should feel safe in my own home environment. As your partner moves into more solid recovery and has more time without his 'alcoholic' foods, he won't be as bothered seeing or smelling the foods he finds uncontrollable now. Right now, in the beginning, he can use all the support from all members of the family, it won't be hard forever if he can get this disease under control! Best wishes to you all! Nancy D.

Thanks so much for sharing your experience and all of this information. I am sorry if I missed it, but does the plan go for all heights, body structures, absorbtion rates and activity levels? (I do not expect an "expert answer", this is just meant as a general question. I am muscular and on the somewhat taller side and pretty active. I have gut issues and I am not sure if I am really absorbing as many calories as other people. If I eat under 2700 cals I lose weight quickly and usually cannot maintain the plan for too long. My doctor couldn't really comment on it so I do not know more for now. I figure a short & petite person with a sedentary job and a healthy gut might have very different needs from me.)

Excellent question Wesenskern! I know a woman who follows the exact food plan is shorter than I am and wears clothes 3 sizes smaller! Our bodies are all different! Kay says her plan supports 45 minutes of exercise daily. She has suggested athletes follow the food plan for men. Protein is increased to 6 oz, 5 oz for beef, and 3 eggs are a protein serving at each meal. Also, the oil serving is bumped up to 2 tablespoons or 6 teaspoons per day. (found on her site). I hope this helps! All the best to you on your journey!

@@KaraJBax OA does not recommend any one food plan. OA recommends you consult a dietitian. Many sponsors recommend you make a list of three types of foods. Red foods, those you can't help but overeat (set up the allergy of the body). Yellow foods, those food that you can sometimes eat without overeating. And green foods, foods that do not cause you to overeat. Then develop a food plan that includes the foods from the green list! I am really struggling to set up a food plan. I have some "paradoxal" food that isn´t considered that healthy I can handle better from time to time than some unprocessed "healthy" food groups like nuts. Additionally I don´t need to lose weight I just want mental freedom/peace and don´t feel like life isn´t tolerable without stuffing and numbing oneself with "food"-drug. :( Are there any safe rules for creating this food plan including "contradictions"?
@GratefullyRecoveringFoodAddict
@GratefullyRecoveringFoodAddict 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Jo! Not all so-called 'healthy' foods are right for everyone! Nuts make me binge! 'Healthy' granola bars are like candy/crack to my body! Dairy causes inflammation etc.! A good place to start is to make 3 lists of foods. Green are foods that you enjoy and don't cause you any problems. Yellow may be those if-y foods you can handle better from time to time and than the red foods that you know are not good for your body/don't make you feel well and don't give you energy. Out of the healthy foods on the green list, you can come up with a balanced Mederitarian style food plan that includes the healthy nutrients your body craves! Make a list of foods you like for breakfast, lunch, and healthy dinner favorites. Another important tip for eating healthy is to have the foods in your house available! If you know what you have planned for meals and have the food in the house you won't have to think about food as much you'll have that mental freedom and peace you're looking for! Don't get me wrong, life is still life but with my food plan, regular meditation, exercise, and my fellows in recovery I know I can handle anything life has to offer without using food, (my drug of choice) to cope with all the ups and downs life has to offer! All the best to you Jo! Nancy D., Gratefully Recovering Food Addict

Mac Kennedy yes, I know the story all too well! Congrats on the alcohol! Now to put down your ‘alcoholic’ foods! We turn to food to help medicate ourselves! We each need to find a way to comfort and soothe ourselves without using anything harmful! Taking good care mind, body, & soul. Clean up the thinking, no more beating up on ourselves, we’re human, not perfect! Eat a healthy balanced diet, get proper rest, exercise, & hydration. Use meditation in place of medicating! Don’t stop before your miracle Mac!You can do it and you’re worth it! 💗

@@GratefullyRecoveringFoodAddict but ingesting products from miserable tortured animals is not good for the soul. Milk and eggs come from farmed animals. Cows are artificially inseminated, their calf is taken away shortly after birth - so that humans can have its milk. Chicken farms are full of females. Their beaks are trimmed, they see no day light - male chicks are shredded alive just minutes after hatching. An abhorrid industry full of misery. Eating that misery in the Form of a cholesterol bomb egg seems Country productive. How can we be happy, eating misery? Supporting this type of industry?

The problem I have with OA it doesn’t address the reason why you turn to food in the first place.

Does that book take you through meal plans for vegetarians?
@GratefullyRecoveringFoodAddict
@GratefullyRecoveringFoodAddict 3 жыл бұрын
Sorry no. Kay Sheppard doesn't recommend the food addict try to follow a vegetarian food plan. She believes the food addict needs a good amount of protein each day. Trying to get that from starchy vegetables (legumes etc.) that are too high in carbs/sugars can't be sustained for very long. Wishing you all the best on your journey Sarah! Nancy D. Hello, do you use butter ? Oil is required to spread for two or three meals? Don’t know which to peak Thank you , crazy addict and your video watcher))))

Hi! Butter is not on my food plan. It is easy for me to overeat and I have a problem with dairy. When I started I had one tablespoon of oil on my salad at lunch in the salad dressing. Now I like to split it up to have half on the salad and half on my starch and vegetables at supper. You get used to the amount and I now feel satisfied with a total of one measured tablespoon of olive or nut oil per day with my meals! Thanks for watching the videos and I wish you all the best on your journey! Love, Nancy D., Gratefully Recovering Food Addict

Wait if some people cope with food or drugs or alcohol how do mentally stable people cope?
@GratefullyRecoveringFoodAddict
@GratefullyRecoveringFoodAddict 4 жыл бұрын
They cope in the way I'm learning to. They care for themselves in a loving healthy way. I work on shutting out the negative self-talk and forgive myself for mistakes and remind myself I'm human. Fear and worry about the future has never made any situation better. With the help of my Higher Power, I do my best each day with my food plan and self-care. I pray to be kind and loving to myself and others! People that treat themselves in a loving way don't hurt themselves with food or anything else! All the best to you Rit on your recovery journey! I have a food plan, can anyone share their opinion on eating whole grain sprouted bread like Ezekiel bread?
@GratefullyRecoveringFoodAddict
@GratefullyRecoveringFoodAddict 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Maricela! In my experience working with others, products like Ezekiel bread is still using a refined whole grain and so still turns quickly to 'sugar' beginning in the mouth and then the body and so starts the allergy of the body, obsession of the mind. I find it safest to stick with eating whole grains (except wheat) only. Whole grains include Amaranth, Hulled Barley, Brown Rice, Buckwheat, Millet, Oat Bran, Oat Groats, Quinoa, Ryberries, Steel Cut Oats, and Teff. Experiment and you'll find you'll like some of them. When any whole grains are turned into flour it causes problems for the food addict. I hope this helps! All the best to you Maricela on your journey! Nancy D., Gratefully Recovering Feed Addict

How do I find my food plan?
@GratefullyRecoveringFoodAddict
@GratefullyRecoveringFoodAddict 4 жыл бұрын
First I would make a list of red light, yellow light, and green light foods! Red light foods are the ones you overeat, obsess about, and crave. the yellow light foods are the ones that sometimes seem fine but other times cause you problems. Greenlight foods are healthy foods you can eat without triggering you to overeat. Overeaters Anonymous recommends you see a nutritionist to help you figure out a meal plan using your favorite green light foods! Some nutritionist believe we can occasionally eat our red light foods. This food addict cannot touch my red light foods and then stop, not even for a special occasion or holiday! I always say there is no vacation from food addiction! We have to accept it and do whatever it takes to recover our health! I find great support for my recovery journey in OA meetings! I wish you all the best on your journey to health and happiness Nancy!
