I always feel that it's trying to capture the soul, the very essence of the subject.

Your video made me smile while tears came to my eyes....You speak from the heart and your experience, and you've reminded me of many things that I know as an artist but fail to keep foremost in my practice. Thank you for that, and also for giving me something to share with family and friends who don't quite know how to relate to what I do because it's "abstract."

yes! "trying gets in the way"... I find when I "try" it usually doesn't work, but when I'm just playing, I make stuff I love. People think abstract is easier than realism, but I find it harder. I LOVE your perspective and the way you explain the inner world of painting. I'm learning a new way of defining what makes a painting successful. Number one criteria: joy.

Thank you, Louise! You have become one of my beacons. - When Matisse ( Pretty sure it was Matisse.) was asked how did he know when his painting was finished, he said, to paraphrase, “ When I can’t find anything more in it to change or correct.” I try to remember to think that way when struggling to decide weather my painting is finished. I love to hear you think in this way, as well. I really like your work and thank you for sharing your experiences and wisdom. 💕👩🏻🎨

What you say totally resonates with me. I'm a poet and that's exactly how I work. People often say, ah but you don't do the hard stuff (by which they mean end rhyme), you're taking the easy way out using free verse. Not so. You have to work harder to achieve the result in free verse. Often, you use internal rhyme to create a feeling that's so subtle the reader/listener isn't aware of how you manage to stir their emotions. I enjoy your videos - tfs 😊

what you have described in this short time is exactly how I feel when I paint, but I paint more realistically and sometimes the feeling doesn't come through in the way I wanted it to originally. I have a space in a gallery, and sometimes the pressure to create something new overrides letting the paintings arrive in their own time. I guess it is practice and experience that helps you to move past these things. Thank you for sharing your insights.

First let me tell you how absolutely inspiring you are! I’ve tried to explain to some friends why I choose to do abstracts - how I can try to show how the autumn leaves sound as they brush against each other; how the wind sounds as it rustles the trees and branches; how a bird soaring lifts my spirits in a way that makes me want to paint. I do have a question for you: Do you paint with your canvas on the wall, or laid flat, or on an easel? I’ve found that for me, it depends on the size canvas, the lighting, etc - and I end up painting flat sometimes, sometimes on the wall, less time on the easel. I’d love to hear your thoughts!

I paint on a wall (screws to hang the boards or canvases). I prefer it xx

Thank you Louise, that’s the most descriptive and clear explanation of the reason for abstract painting, it brought up the emotion I felt when returning to the village where my mother died, overlooking the valley where we lived I could see it was shrouded in warm mist and felt heavy with my feelings, how to put that on a canvas? NOW I know what you keep telling us.

Watercolour was my go to thing to bring in happy chemicals......after years,,,it kind of died when I could even paint when I wasn't feeling like it. But that went too. I want to thank you for capturing my imagination against and I think I even feel excitement. I very much enjoyed the accidental , moorish side of my painting....when I didn't know where to start. I would often get stuck and with that followed my depression. I can't wait to try this...I think this is my calling. I was very down today and very Adhd....this has woken my artistic brain again....thank you soo much.
