You are one of the few young reactors to actually get that this is a song about the depression from losing a loved one. Congratulations on paying attention to the lyrics and understanding them.

The Rolling Stones are considered the bad boys of rock & roll. I grew up with their early stuff. My favorite era of The Rolling Stones is from the 60's British Invasion. I loved the "Flowers" album. They had a lot of great early hits such as "Get Off Of My Cloud", "Ruby Tuesday", "Let's Spend The Night Together", "Satisfaction", "Jumpin' Jack Flash", "Honky Tonk Women", "You Can't Always Get What You Want", "Gimme Shelter", "Tumbling Dice", "Brown Sugar" etc. "Paint It Black" describes the grief suffered by someone stunned by the sudden & unexpected loss of a partner.

My dad was a fan, I'm not old enough to have been there then, and I actually just like this perticular song from them, it'sfantastic in my opinion their best. Can't say why really except it is magical and covered millions of times and I was like 16 when heard a cover of this from a goth band. 😅 So yes, it's a very good song. Hugs from Sweden.

OMG I know this song. It reminds me of old days of mine with radio. There's no CDs, and cassette tapes are too expensive for a young girl that day, just an old radio and I listened to DJ's favorite play list, and Rolling Stones was one of them. He's very old now, and I as a K-pop lover, don't listen to the radio any more, this song was my favorite too.

Songfacts®: This is written from the viewpoint of a person who is depressed; he wants everything to turn black to match his mood. There was no specific inspiration for the lyrics. When asked at the time why he wrote a song about death, Mick Jagger replied: "I don't know. It's been done before. It's not an original thought by any means. It all depends on how you do it." The song seems to be about a lover who died: "I see a line of cars and they're all painted black" - The hearse and limos. "With flowers and my love both never to come back" - The flowers from the funeral and her in the hearse. He talks about his heart being black because of his loss. "I could not foresee this thing happening to you" - It was an unexpected and sudden death. "If I look hard enough into the setting sun, my love will laugh with me before the morning comes" - This refers to her in Heaven.

If you are able to hear, and you've lived in the United States for more than a year, then you've almost certainly heard The Rolling Stones. You might not have KNOWN it was them, but you've probably heard them. It would be incredibly difficult to go through life in this country and NOT hear them. Their songs are in films and commercials and are in heavy rotation on radio stations to this very day. Listen to "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" and see if it doesn't sound familiar. Then see about "Gimme Shelter" (guest vocalist Merry Clayton will blow you away with her legendary performance on that one!) and "Jumpin' Jack Flash" next. The odds are good that you will recognize AT LEAST one of those three songs.

To my ear, the Stones don't have a particular sound, but they do have a particular, intangible feel to their music. This song, "Start Me Up", "Angie", "Emotional Rescue", have very little in common to each other musically, but still share a unique Rolling Stones feel. . Either I'm a fool trying to explain the unexplainable, or I'm a fool for missing something that's completely obvious. Either way, I'm still an old man who wants those kids to stay off of my yard...

I don't understand how this can be an "Official Lyric Video" when some of the lyrics are wrong. It says "Don't wanna see the sun flying high in the sky", when the actual lyrics (and what Mick is clearly singing) are "I want to see the sun blotted out from the sky".

First of all I don't really care if you get it. I don't care at all. What I like is listening to this stuff, often times that I grew up with, coupled with the fact that I'm a musician of now decades, I just like to look back and compare the nostalgia with the actual substance of it, and these reactions do that for me. They make me stop and slow down and just think about things from a different point of view. And so that's the greater value I see in it. But I do think you nailed it. At least that's the way I've always thought about it, exactly as you described it.
