I feel the need to point out that at 3:13 in Betty, James sings he is on her front porch. At 3:13 in Cardigan, Betty says she knew he would be back in her front porch light. In addition, at 2:47 in Betty, James says "she said James get in the car". At 2:47 in August, she says remember when I said Get in the car. Taylor is a master storyteller and the above are just a few examples of her literary genius. Have a Swift day.

So, him saying 'where it all went wrong' was when he was being SELFISH and 'hated crowds' (the school dance) even though it was her FAVORITE song playing. She'd agreed to dance with someone at school b/c her boyfriend disappeared on her. So he tried to make it HER fault that he went out and found his summer fling because he 'saw her dance with him' (some rando). Like... get real. It's so real and so common which makes it so perfect. The blame game, the feelings uncommunicated, the feeling alone etc.

Best listening order for me is Cardigan, August, Betty. It highlights the full circle connection best.

hearing Cardigan first also makes clear James' excuse that he was just 17 was flimsy at best

James saying "I'm 17 I don't know anything" and Betty saying "I knew everything when I was young really captures how young men and women's behavior expectations are different. The boys will be boys thing

And all 3 names, Betty, James and Inez are the names of Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively’s kids. So….Betty and James were a couple, he went to the dance at the gym and felt uncomfortable in there. He saw Betty was having a good time so he left and Augustine picked him up and they had a summer fling. He felt guilty and realized he wanted to be back with Betty. Can’t be denied….Taylor is a genius putting these 3 characters in a romantic trilogy.

I love how James tries to blame August and gaslight Betty in the same line, "she pulled up but I thought of you"

Great reaction! It is great to see when reactors become immersed in the lyrics. Cardigan has a beautiful MV, and Taylor did a live performance (to no one in the actual audience due to the pandemic), but it is so mesmerizing. When she gets to the part of f-myself, there is this little smirk of a smile before she says the alternate word. It is priceless, and at the end, she looks like she is staring into your soul.

Great reaction to this trilogy. Almost everyone can relate to these songs either personally or through a friend. Another paint the picture Taylor done masterfully. ❤Stay safe

So many crossover between the songs too, like in august she says “get in the car” and in Betty James said “she said James get in” and summer love concept in both Betty and august. In cardigan “I knew you'd miss me once the thrill expired, And you'd be standin' in my front porch light” for the whole “But if I just showed up at your party” in Betty, it also hints that Betty ended up forgiving James. There are many little ester eggs like these thru out these 3 songs

It’s always fun doing these reactions with Mr. A.B. This is on Folklore, so it was a made up story but with the perspectives. Genius. I’ve never heard of any artist doing this; and so effortlessly beautiful, too. Betty, James and Inez are the names of Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds real life children. The names are an ode for her affection for them and their children, whom she absolutely adores. They call her Aunt Tay. They thought that singing was a hobby for her until they went to their first concerts (with ear protection), and their eyes were wide like saucers. She made sure to say “My favorite people: James, Inez and Betty!” while they were there. They were beaming from their excitement. She loves them like they were her own. Taylor was in her bag in Folklore because she was able to write whatever she wanted/needed to and AFTER it was done, that’s when she told her label and they were very supportive and said they would support anything that she wanted to. Like you’d say no to a brand new Taylor Swift album, ready to go? Then she goes and writes Evermore 8 months later. The woman cannot sit still. Haha. She loves music too much and it’s therapeutic for her. It’s a blessing that she had this opportunity to be herself with the songs. The proof is how amazing they are written & performed.❤🥳🥰🎙️

"You put me on and said I was your favorite" This can be taken sweetly -- you found this forgotten about thing and put it on and made it your favorite OR You put me on, meaning you tricked me to believe I was your favorite. "put me on" "put me on and said I was your favorite"
@kschirmer199212 күн бұрын
Ooh I never thought about it as that turn of phrase 🤯 I took it as putting on a sweater but then sort of a betrayal - you said I was your favorite, then you did me wrong - like pointing out the disparity there

In the "Folklore: Long Pond Studio Sessions" on Disney+, she says the "side chick's" name is Augustina, I think, if I remember correctly . . . 🤔 I honestly feel bad for her . . . #JusticeForAugustina and 'Cardigan' reminds me, kinda, of "A Walk To Remember" 'cause, ya know, she always wore cardigans & he gave her a pink one in that movie . . . Also, in the "LPSS", Taylor says that, in her mind, James & Betty DO end up together, so, ya know, once again, #JFA!!! 🤩
@ThatGirlShelbyy2 ай бұрын
She has references (like the song Peter) on her newest album (TTPD) that tie back to this. People think that looking back, it seems this could be a multi-song story inspired by her own life (and relates back to Matty Healy because of the song peter tying into it, so ppl think he's one of the people in these 3 songs!) She's always said that the album was consisting of stories that she made up, where she's the narrator instead of a main character pov. But with ttpd, some people suspect that it might not be as objective and "made up". But we'll never know for sure unless she outright says anything in the future 😅 either way it's beautiful storytelling

Imo the ending of betty doesn't actually reveal if they do get back together or not (he's saying "I know I've missed you standing in your cardigan and kissing in my car again, stopped at a street light", like they used to do that and he misses it), it's open-ended so each listener can draw their own conclusion. Taylor did say that in her mind they did end up back together tho
