I just got my first 2 Ambassadeurs ever. I’ve always just cleaned my stuff and put back the oil and grease the same way as the manufacturer (grease on the level wind stuff). I keep thinking about trying to clean them up like you do but I’m being chicken about it haha. I took my brand new C3s out yesterday and had a good time casting and retrieving them. I went down to no brakes and that thing blew up on me so I went to two brakes. I was throwing a 2 oz sinker with a 1 oz tied on below it to emulate a short carolina rig. On my best cast (line stopped on top the water, didn’t let out excess line) I cranked down the drag and counted 129 turns of the handle and at 26” per turn I’m pretty sure it was roughly 93 yards. I was so amazed with how well they cast and wish I had tried Abu sooner. With all of that said, if I were to do some of the “free” upgrades like cleaning the bearings in lighter fluid then carefully adding 1 drop of oil, removing the factory grease and cutting the plastic off of the cogwheel, would I have a smoother and longer casting reel or would I potentially end up with a reel that’s similar to using no brakes?

In a nutshell what I’m trying to ask is the more I tune the reel by removing factory grease and upgrading parts will the reel simply be better or will it somehow require more skill to use? Just trying to get some idea of what to expect

So for starters casting 2 or 3 oz. you will defiantly need some brake power. With that much weight or with any amount of weight you should use the tension knob on the side to slow the reel down if you get too much back lash. Over time you will learn to cast with less brake and tension. I ALWAYS cut the plastic off the cog. Several of other ABUs come with the "C" clip on the cog from the factory not sure why they use 2 methods. The bearings should be OK from the factory. The should not have any grease on them. If you plan to do your own work then would not hurt to give it a try. You really can't hurt anything unless you are unable to get it back together. Keep in mind that when you change weights you should be able to adjust the tension and not change the breaks. There should be videos on the tension adjustment. I should do one myself. Hi nice video. I have a question: I bought a 6500 factory tuned JDM Ambassadeur that is very stiff. I am considering doing what you're doing -- degrease, oil lightly, reassemble... but to what end? Do you think it will translate into further casts? How much if, so, would you guess? Moving it so fast, one might think it would increase reel backlashing if you're not paying attention. In any case, if this is worth doing I will, just unsure about the gains.

If you are talking about long distance tournament casting then I’m not your guy. Not sure what you mean by very stiff. If it’s not casting like it should I would look at the brake settings and spool pressure. Make sure you understand settings. It never hurts to degrease and oil the bearings. Even if it’s new. Factory tuned to me means that the gears and cranking mechanisms have been polished for smoothness but should have nothing to do with casting distance. Don’t hold me to that. Hope this helps. @@abugarciareelrepairandmain8684 Thanks for your reply. JDM is Japanese Domestic Market -- often the Japanese have equipment that are not commonly sold in other jurisdictions. When I say stiff, I mean, new and unused and similar to the reel you performed the work on prior to the work. I have yet to use it but thinking degreasing and lubing for tonnes of spool speed may not be necessary if you're not throwing (relatively) super light baits... what would you say the benefit of having a very fast reel is? I’ll wrap it up by saying this. I want my reel to be clean and serviced properly so the reel can do what it is designed to do. Once you get there if you want longer cast you have to be better at it. Learn to adjust properly and practice, practice, practice. Super fast doesn’t necessarily mean longer cast. Love the conversation.

Funny question. It’s a timing thing. Make sure you hold onto the Reel tightly because I have dropped them in the past trying to do that. Put your thumb on the button and firmly spin the handle. The second your hand comes off the handle, push the button and it should free spool.
