ABUSED & SCARRED DRAFT HORSE ~ GETS EMOTIONAL SESSION with THE ANIMAL CRACKER!

To say that "Keeper" had a tough life would be an understatement. Keeper had years of hardship, suffering, zero love.... and has the scars to prove it.
Keeper, is a 20 year old Belgian draft horse that was rescued and living at Gentle Giants Draft Horse Rescue, gets a little session with Dr. Doug Willen, The Animal Cracker.

Origins
The familiar "blond" Belgian Draft horse that we see in the United States has its roots in the Brabant, also known as the Belgian Heavy Draft. This name has been shortened to Belgian for common usage.
During the Middle Ages it was known as the Flanders Horse (after the region of Europe in which it originated) and had great influence on the development of other draft horse breeds, such as the Suffolk Punch, the Clydesdale and the Shire.
Throughout the centuries, Belgian breeders resisted pressure to produce lighter cavalry horses and concentrated on breeding the Brabant, or Belgian Heavy Draft, which was well-suited to the climate and rich, heavy soil of the region. By not allowing foreign blood to enter the breed and by practicing selective breeding to promote desired qualities, the Belgian breeders were able to produce a versatile heavy draft horse with exceptional power.
Appearance
The Brabant, or Belgian Heavy Draft horse, is a massive horse, powerfully built and standing between 16.2 - 17 hands. The head is comparatively small and refined, with an intelligent expression. The Belgian Draft more normally seen in the United States is not as "massive" as the Brabant, but still retains the proportions of the Brabant.
The body is compact with a short, wide back and powerful loins. The quarters are massive, with a characteristic "double muscling" over the croup. The gaskins are heavily muscled and the legs are short and strong. The hooves are medium sized, for a draft horse, with only limited "feathering".
Early Belgians were mostly bay, with chestnut/sorrel and roan not far behind in popularity. However, since the 1920's breeders in the United States have bred for the sorrel and roan colors and nowadays these are by far the most common colors of Belgian horses in the US. The most prized color is the chestnut or sorrel with white mane and tail, white stripe on the face and four white socks.
Uses
The Belgian is known for it's kind temperament and is easy to handle. They are still used for all manner of draft work, including plowing, logging, pulling carriages, hitches and sleighs. In addition, the riding of draft horses is becoming increasingly popular, in a variety of disciplines from western to jumpin.

I am autistic and struggle to express emotions. I can count on one hand the amount of times I’ve cried in the last 10 years (I’m 34)…… I cried for Keeper. Thank you for helping him feel a little better. I know he is going to know nothing but love from now on. I adore horses but I’m not in the position to be able to have one, but if my circumstances were different, I would have one of these gentle giants in a heartbeat. Instead, I have 2 rescue dogs. One I’ve had for 6 years, and she still has severe anxiety and suffered from PTSD. The other is only a year old, and thankfully young enough to bounce back. Thank you for sharing, and I know others will respond enthusiastically and lovingly to your comment and connect with your vulnerability and authenticity. I know I do. You are so generous to bring in 2 rescues and give them a home and love. What are the names of your dogs? Please share if you can. It sounds like you are a natural healer with animals, as you mentioned the new dog is already responding to your love and touch. My advice is keep massaging them and working on their muscles. You will learn a lot. You will learn all their favorite places, and also look for all the places that feel tight and rigid. You can hold these spots gently. You don't need to rub the tender spots. Simply push with your fingertips with the amount of pressure that you could push into a grape and not crush the grape. Then find a new "grape". If you do this every day, it will also help both you and the dogs with making them feel calm. Every day. I hope to visit Scotland one day in the future, and maybe we can meet, and go visit some horses together. Let me know how you do, and don't forget to tell us the names. They actually recognise animals as sentient beings who deserve basic rights. @@elizabethjansen2684 Sores and Galling from improper fit of the collar, poorly adjusted hames, improper draft, don't create large punctures and avulsions. Wounds and scars like that, in my opinion are caused by mechanical trauma associated with some type of wreck or accident. Do ignorant people who use improper fitting tack create sores or abrasions on horses while working? Yes, certainly. My statement is about the appearance of the wounds on this particular horse. It's a great credit to the species that after experiencing said trauma, he remains calm and trusting. If only humans could do the same.

Whoever did all of that to Keeper should be prosecuted, heavily fined and jailed for animal cruelty!!! There is absolutely NO excuse for so severely abusing an animal like that!! What a beautiful, yet stoic horse. One thing I noticed, he is ears pointed up like “I am so great” whenever the camera was directly going for full frontal. He wears his scars with honor. In another year, he will be astounding. He also loved all the attention you were giving him. He was an almost near perfect patient. The last scene as you patted and kissed him was a true photo op. 💕💕

@@AnimalCrackerDrDougWillen What would the optimum treatment schedule be for Keeper? I would think it would be ideal to work on him really once per week, than twice per month. Then observing how he's responding, reduce treatments to once per month and then to some maintenance schedule. Considering he's had a lifetime of hard work and abuse, would be great to be able to treat him everyother month for the rest of his life. What would you consider the best schedule for Keeper?? . After a bad back injury I discovered myofascial trigger point therapy. It helped me so much that I went to train and get certified in that work. While training in PA. we did learn to work on horses but not as much as I wanted to. But I eventually found an excellent chiropractor whom I would see on a weekly basis. He was so interested in what I had learned that he had me work on his patients to relax and loosen them up so his adjustments would be easier.

Such a gentle soul (both Keeper and Doug). I guess Keeper was so used to carrying pain around he tightened his whole body up. Thank you dear Dr Doug for helping all these magnificent animals. I saw the same thing... It was like when Doc put pressure on that was uncomfortable, he zoned out - He had the same "thousand-yard stare" that we folks with PTSD can get when trying to get through something triggering. To see him give a little lick near the end was amazing - He was finally starting to be present and realize that what Doc was doing was actually to help him. THAT brought the tears to me. When Doc stops periodically to connect emotionally with him, I think that really helps in cases like this.

This☝🏽he was so resigned to expecting pain, you could sense his trauma, what’s worse is he probably afraid to even react in case he ends up with more pain. Most times people who abuse the giants break their spirit in the worst way to avoid them resisting once they grow stronger.

as someone from Sweden where workhorses are still common both as riding horses but also for uses in different scenarios, AND as someone who loves these big, calm and gentle giants, I'm so happy to see people reaching out and helping animals in need. Also we need MORE people who learn how to massage and "crack" animals to feel better. I've been in pain for most of my adult life, and no doctors could help me, but massages and chiropractor could. You guys are heroes.

It's fascinating to watch how Keeper reacts to what you're doing as you loosen the fascia and shift things back. He is annoyed for some and then curious and you can see the release on his face once he realizes somethong has moved and so he can move differently. What amazing work you get to do with all these amazing organizations. Keeper is in good hands!

Hello Dr. ! I’m new to your channel, but when I saw a video on draft horses, I had to watch. I just retired from rescue after 35 years. I’ve seen the most horrid things that monsters do to these precious souls. Keeper is one that brought me to tears. Referring to Keeper's non-licking motion, is it possible that he cannot 'feel' much in the way of emotion, because he has been abused so much? It's almost like "I know in my head that I'm free, but I'm still mentally yoked to the plough. Can I trust these humans?" It's so obvious, in this episode, that you care deeply for Keeper, Dr Doug. I know when my abs get that tight, it's because of pain in my back, and trying to just stay upright because other areas hurt so much. As he rebuilds muscle in his haunches, that tummy tightness should ease. He'll need a LOT of massage as he rebuilds! Plus he deserves all the pets and strokes that come with it!

Thankyou for acknowleging my comment. The peace you bring to these animals is amazing knowing they are now pain free. Some years ago i bought an irish draught cross. I was advised not to buy him. He'd been abused and used as a hunter where he ended up injured. Smashed his knee on a wall and toppled over while some big guy hunting him. His knee fused and was misshapen. But he was sound on it. He was very nervous but i could see the kindness in his eyes. I knew it was going to be a long road to gain his trust. I had been trained the monty roberts methods and after a few weeks of settling in his new home i did join up. Within 15mins he joined up with me. It was very emotional. The first few weeks was hard for him. Hed run to the corner of the stable and shake. Its also true that you can wee out of fright and he did. I'd stand in the stable with my back to him for hours. I could feel he wanted to approach me but it was hard for him. Then I'd leave him in peace. Driving home I'd curse the guy who did this to him. He was a previous owner to the one i bought him from so i never met the guy......lucky him!! I got the physio in but he really needed a chiropractor. Unfortunately there isn't many in england. He had quite a u kneck so along with join up we needed to work on that. I started to introduce him to lots of things he was scared of. We would play ball , carrier bags on a stick. Carrots under his belly and to the side to help him bend. The trust built between us and he was such a gentleman. He didn't know how to rein back. Hunters aren't taught to go backwards! So we got on with that on the ground first. It ended that if i walked backwards he did. He was a joy. He got into the habit of not eating his feed until i said ok. Bizarre as I'd never trained him to do that. Just one of his querks!! I started to do some dressage with him. He was a natural. He was so close to me he'd get jealous if another horse came near me. He was the love of my life. I lost him after 12yrs to colic. The major surgery couldn't save him. In england theres a big shortage of chiropractors and dentists. Some people even have there farrier rasping there teeth or a vet. I had to pay a lot for a proper dentist because they had to travel to see him. I just think i wouldn't have a chiropodist or a doctor doing my teeth so my horse wouldn't have that!! Sorry to rabbit on about my horse. I wanted to let you know my experience with a damaged horse. Its a pleasure to watch your videos and i look forward to the next one.🐴🐴🐴🐴

I could tell that Keeper was walking like his back left leg was tight. I'm so glad you got a lot of release for him. Whoever used to be his owner before should be turned in for animal abuse so he doesn't do this to another horse or animal. Keeper is such a sweet horse.
