this is a very good video, nice job. That said, you may need to revisit the part about the corridor being part of the "exit" as IBC does NOT consider the corridor an exit if rated. Chapter 2 defines what can be considered an exit and corridor is not in the list. They also define "corridor" and specifically call it an "exit access" component. This is important because travel distance is measured to an exit and if rated corridors were part of the exit you could theoretically have stairs way farther apart than the code intended. Great video and channels however...thanks for putting together.

Thank you for your clearly explained comment. I looked into what you noted and think you may be right :). Need to add this to the "correction" list of things to do when I update some of the videos. Thank you for the manner in which you pointed out your observations, very kind of you.

Got that Right ! A first read through Ch 10 only confuses me, Thoroughly . So much so, I think I am in a; "Who,s on 1st, & What's on 2nd" scene,with Zero hope of ever understanding the content. Excellent video with one exception. I believe IBC defines corridors as part of the “exit access” without regard to construction. If it is constructed as a rated component of the means of egress, it may be considered a portion of the “exit” under certain conditions, but then it would, by definition, not be a corridor. See IBC chapter 2 (definitions) under “CORRIDOR.”
@archicorner
@archicorner 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching the video and for your candid input. IT IS TRULY APPRECIATED! You are correct; "Corridor" is defined in chapter 2. In addition "Corridors" are discussed in chapter 10 section 1020. Moreover, table 1020.1 describes the fire rated requirements for such corridors. If this table requires that your corridor be rated, then, it will be part of the "exit access" regardless of rating, just as you described. Nevertheless there are instances when a rating is NOT required by section 1020 / Table 1020.1. In these instances, going BEYOND the code requirements for "corridors" per 1020 and providing a "RATED corridor" may provide you a solid argument and may allow you to include this as part of your "exit". This can be further discussed with your local AHJ, who in the end, along with your architect, will be the ones making the final call. GREAT INPUT!

Question: do you only need to transition form “exit access” to “exit” when you run out of exit access travel distance? If that stairwell had been less than 200’ travel, could the stairwell have been called an “enclosed exit access stairwell” instead of an “exit stairwell”?

I think, different required and overlaps between IBC Chapter 10 and NFPAs. I think, each state and Federal Offices needs to check IBC and NFPAs excluding the personnel housing!! Arch Engr needs to recived from Fire Protection Engineer's opinion. However, this video is great!!

If the rated corridor is not counted into travel distance, is the corridor same as the exit passageway? Thank you!
@archicorner
@archicorner 3 жыл бұрын
No. And the reason is that an exit passageway is an extension of the stairway. That means there are other things that affect a passageway differently than a corridor. For example things like fire rating (needs to match the stairwell) and also penetrations into and out of the exit passageway. These are some examples of items that may affect a corridor and an exit passageway differently. Great question!

Can a 7 story residential have one exit if sprinklered and each floor has an occupancy of less than 49 ?
@archicorner
@archicorner 2 жыл бұрын
There are many items to consider to determine number of exits. You are asking about egress from a floor. This is separate to requirements based on occupant load. The IBC requires all floors above or below the egress level to have a minimum of 2 exits. There are a few exceptions to this but generally that’s the minimum number that will be needed. Therefore even if your occupant load does not require 2 exits, the fact that you are in a level above or below the egress level will most likely require 2 exits.

Exterior bearing walls of my building is made of bricks and interior with normal wood and sheetrock so I picked IIIB as building type and sent it for plan review along with outside pictures of building showing bricks all over. It came back asking me for proof that the bearing walls are type IIIB !! Can the plan reviewer not see the bricks ?
@archicorner
@archicorner Жыл бұрын
I understand your logic. For better or worst, plan checkers often need proof “by the book”. In other words; what part of the code states that a brick wall is rated? Or what UL design proofs that it is rated? IBC Chapter 7 table 721.1(2) or the UL directory can help get prescriptive designs. You will find that even brick walls can have different ratings depending on the type and material of the brick. A picture may show brick, but is it really brick or just brick veneer? If you state that the brick wall meets the 1 hr or 2hr rating per a specific IBC section or UL design, that may suffice. But I understand what you are saying… it’s just one of those things I guess…

@@archicorner Thank you so very much. Safety should be job one and no question about but it seems each year " opening " a business of almost any kind has becomes harder and harder and it is taking too long and costing too much to open one . I still think cities need to be business friendly and make it easier for businesses to come in to their cities rather than running away from it . Invite the businesses in and do not run them off. New businesses bring jobs, monies , tax dollars and more . updating the codes should be for safety but should not become a burden for growth of business in cities . The guy in plan review office or even the inspectors get the same pay whether they are a part of problem or solution . I firmly believe that updating the codes has not made the projects that much safer that can offset the cost , delay , long wait to open, and growth of economies . We can sit in corner of office and make new codes everyday but would make that us a part of solution ? The idea should be "even kill" and not "over kill" . Thank you.

Not an architect but this is super cool! I had no idea that the means of egress existed. I now understand exits, exit accesses, and exit discharges from an architect’s perspective! Who would have known the exit doesn’t begin at the exit door?!? Subscribed!! I’m going to whip this knowledge out in casual conversation at a bar and seem like I’m Einstein. “Oh wow the means of egress components of this place are really nice. What’s that you ask? you know... the exit, exit access, and exit discharge designs”
