Hi Josue , thanks for sharing your knowledge with us .lm a metal stud framing contractor in California I was wondering if you can do an episode about the 1 1/2" 16 gauge cold roll Chanel or before called black iron is the metal stick that goes in the punched wholes in the studs I would like to know what's the main purpose and when to apply it. Thanks in advance.

You are super informative and do a wonderful job of explaining and simplifying the thought process. I do have a question in reference to other stated wording within the code. Hearing this explanation it can lead me to think that rated walls are only for separation. Chapter 6 of my current version of IBC,(2012) it's old. IBC table 601 specifies that most structural bearing walls are to be rated? Is this a correct assessment or is Chapter 7 the only location to find where rated walls are required?
@archicorner
@archicorner 11 ай бұрын
Good observation. In short, there are various reasons why a wall may need to be fire rated. You mentioned a good reason which is that sometimes certain elements of a building need to be protected in order to be identified as a certain building type. Chapter 6 deals with building types, and will note what walls are required to be rated for a certain building type.

Hello, nice video !. Does anybody know if a Through Penetration of a fired rated wall is also a double Membrane fire barrier penetration of that wall? Thanks.
@doanpham972
@doanpham972 5 ай бұрын
Your usage of "membrane" is confusing. Membrane is often reference to roofing like TPO, PVC or EPDM membrane roofing. Fire penetration products and "assemblies" can be found on 3M or Hilti website under their fire protection products, they should have UL rated assemblies for various type of walls ie Concrete, CMU, Wood Stud, Metal Stud.

Is there any variance allowance say, if you have 2x6 or even 2x8 interior wall? Will the designs for 2x4 transfer?
@archicorner
@archicorner 7 ай бұрын
Most rated conditions are in a book or catalog. In most literature, not all, you will find a prologue that explains the things that you can and cannot do. In most systems, you can have a larger core, but not a smaller one. For example, if the wall calls out for 2x4s but yo provide 2x6s then that is usually okay. But you cannot go from a 2x6 to a 2x4. But as mentioned already, you would have look at the catalog you are getting ratings from.

I have 2x4 walls with 7/16 osb and 19/32 t1-11 how can I make it 1 hour fire rated?
@archicorner
@archicorner 3 ай бұрын
You would have to look through the UL book. There are literally hundreds of designs. It’s possible that one of them may be close to or the same as what you are planning. Another option is to see if the manufacturer offers rated conditions that match your needs. Often times you have to allow for slight modifications pending the approved design.

I live in Visalia, CA. I want to build a metal building made of galvanized steel in my back yard. I have gone to my local municipality several times to discuss permitting requirements. The person that works there told me that because two of the walls are at 3 feet from property line walls, those two walls have to be fire rated at 1 hour. I'm all for smart rule/regulations but what pisses me off is that they cannot tell me any examples of what I would need to do to achieve this. They won't even tell me is a steel building would qualify. They said, "It depends." I was thinking, "Yeah no shit. But you guys have literally no information on what requirements are being used to determine this." This is such an idiotic process. I am extremely frustrated. Wouldn't a steel building already qualify as 1 hour rated? Any help you could provide would be much appreciated. And thank you for your video!

Sorry for the confusion and for the late reply. I think the confusion here lies with between the terms "Fire rated" and "non-combustible". A metal building is already built from "non-combustible" materials and is metal is a good material to build with! However, this alone does not mean that the building (or a wall in the building) has been determined to have a fire rating. Even buildings that are built with only non-combustible materials have collapsed when under fire. That is why a wall must be built in a specific way to be "fire rated" even if it is built with non-combustible materials. If it is a custom prefab building, you may want to ask the fabricator if they have some details for a rated wall that you can use. Otherwise, you may be best off by hiring a residential architect who can design a fire rated wall based on your specific circumstances. Sorry if this was of no help.
