You will feel some type of way about that. And feel disrespected. I respected your video even though I disagree. Just don't buy the game and move on with life. You better watch your heart before it goes black, and you become something far from a decent human being.

This video is surprisingly fair and thought out. Though I liked it I believe much like them you missed the point of their argument. The point of their argument is that if they pick a character(s) they must be a representative OF THAT LAND. Hence Japanese for Japan and that's what offends them but that's not the case for Black Flag either. Yes the Welsh and Brits were there but the land is that of the Caribbean and they weren't native and thus not representative. If your argument is that well they WERE there so that's why they chose a Welshman well so was Yasuke so it's hypocritical.

@EverYoursTruly329 Do you see how you can't keep the same energy. It's ok because the Welsh were there in the Caribbean. Yasuke was in japan. That's the issue. It's double standards. Since it's white, it is alright, but brown it goes down. Ubisoft can't make the game because it's japan they have to respect the culture. Team Ninja is japan, so they can make a white main character in a game( Nioh ) and put Yasuke in it. Then you guys say something stupid like, " But that's a fantasy game, not based on historical events," forgetting it's not real. You fight monsters and gods in Assassin's creed, and it's a fantasy game. It all just comes off as racist. Eivor was a viking in England. You guys are trippin' and lied about japan disliking Yasuke in the game. You just don't like it because he's brown. And when people say there is a Japanese person in the game, which everyone is ignoring by the way and most likely, it's because the Japanese person is a woman. Don't buy the game and move on with your life. You guys are sounding like babies and wrong.

@EverYoursTruly329 I think that's a very off-center view of what made up the carribean. Because of the nature of what makes up the carribean during that point in time, Edward is actually representative of that Era, the same way black beard and hornigold are. If Adewale was a captain off the bat, it actually would have been historically inaccurate. The interesting conversation to be had here would be if people would actually have had an issue with Adewale in that sort of depiction, considering that culture wars were not nearly as prevalent then as they are now. But to say that Edward is the same situation in this instance because he isn't initially from there is a misrepresentation of the setting.

Fantastic, fantastic video! And I never even liked Black Flag back then... but you've successfully convinced me to try it out, again. I feel like I never truly understood what they were trying to do with Edward's character. Probably my biggest gripe was how he was immediately proficient with a lot of assassin skills without having ever been trained by one... and it will probably still be my main issue with it. However, I now have a more clearcut understanding as to how and why people love that character and his game so much. Thanks for this video!

There’s actually a canon explanation for that. Most protagonists in AC have a high percentage of Isu (the First Civilization) blood in their DNA, so naturally they’re stronger, more resilient and even skilled than the average human. Also that’s the explanation for why they have abilities like Eagle Vision. Long story short, they’re basically super soldiers even before they start their training.
@PsychoRavager
@PsychoRavager 7 ай бұрын
@@colemacgrath2005, oh, I always knew that, but Edward certainly felt a bit too OP since most AC protagonists still had to figure things out first via a mentor of sorts, especially with new tools. Would have been cooler if Edward started off using the hidden blades in a more aggressive, pirate fashion rather than pretty much being 100% proficient at it in one go. Heck! Even Desmond needed to train via Animus first before his body started to adapt to the skill set of the particular ancestor he was diving headfirst into. I don't mind how they're already somewhat of a natural in a lot of things they do, but I always felt that Edward had a bit of a rushed narrative on his end when it came to that. Connor had to endure a full time skip before the player was granted access to proper hidden blade stealth and combat.

For a pirate, always felt like Edward Kenway would have benefited from moves that felt like his own way of using a toolset he's never been formally trained with. I wasn't even looking for new mechanics... mostly just animations that could have better set him apart from the ones that actually got into the business so to speak. While I dislike the animations that Eivor has due to a downward spiral in quality over the years (more of a franchise issue than anything else), Eivor has what I'm speaking of in terms of someone new to the utility of the hidden blade and just went with it.

Red flags in Assassins Creed Shadows. 1. Having an historical figure as a main character over an original character. 2. Having a main character not from the culture and region. 3. Using Chinese themed buildings for Sengoku period Japan. Like how do they mess this up? It reminds me of the Puerto Rican/Cuban flag fiaso that happened TWICE in Insomniac Spiderman. 4. Ubisoft working with Sweet Baby Inc for the game. 5. The very likely girl boss approach they will go with Naoe is noticeable. 6. The whole pricing fiasco is insane and they are trying to nickel and dime you. 7. Ubisoft being involved in the Wikipedia edits is an issue.

Dude, thank you really, you pointed out alot of things i have said about Ubisoft's decision to use Yasuke in Shadows considering almost all the other AC games have been characters within the races the setting was in, and fictional too. Another thing that really annoyed me is the whole Wikipedia nonsense, they are trying so hard to make Yasuke's status as a samurai true and when pointed out about lack of proof they try to compare it to William in Nioh forgetting the fact that unlike Yasuke, there was proof of WIlliam becoming a Samurai and getting married with a Japanese woman and having 2 kids.
@shandydasquire
@shandydasquire 6 ай бұрын
The thing is, I'm fine with Ubisoft making Yasuke a samurai since this is a fictional story based on "real events." People complaining that it needs to be entirely accurate are not making a compelling case for themselves. The bigger issues just lie with consistency within the series and within the fandom. I'm noticing that a lot of people who are not taking issues with this game would very likely have taken issue with a game set in Africa that features a white man as the main character. That being said, there are also people who take issues with this change that wouldn't take issue with my example. My main focus was just looking at black flag and highlighting why it shouldn't be used as an example of a character not being ethnically associated with the setting, but that doesn't change the fact there are genuine issues in this community. Or perhaps, like with most other communities, it's just a spillover effect from outsiders coming in to use the game as the next big talking point over some random culture war that I don't care for.

People on twitter are the lowest of the low. They intentionally miss the point; I can't say why, maybe it satiates their addiction for attention, or maybe they love drama, or perhaps they're actually dumb enough to think they're onto something. The only written history we have from the Americas during this time is from Europeans, there is essentially nothing to go on if you chose to portray a native (Which they were all either dead from European pathogens, fled to the mainland or enslaved in the Caribbean). Besides, lets assume we have a dartboard full of potential characters (aka, must be free, not enslaved) to play as in the game, 999,999/1,000,000 you will land on a European. If we did this in japan, you would have better odds of being struck by lighting while reading out winning numbers on a lottery ticket while being eaten by a shark on a plane that is crashing, than landing on a non-japanese character. It's very obvious to me that they wanted a DEI character but knew that adding one in feudal japan would be incredibly controversial, so they chose the only black man in that time period to hide behind while also changing everything about him essentially making him an original character anyways.

You’ve done a very good analysis of Edward Kenway and Black Flag, in my personal opinion it’s probably deserving of a video on its own. I would like to point out something I noticed about Shadows. With the protagonist choice, the developers probably wanted to convey a theme where the player could feel foreign and also familiar with the same piece of land. To achieve this, they created two characters, Naoe, who is native to Japan, and Yasuke, who is completely alien to the land. I’d imagine they were going for a sort of George and Lennie dynamic, where one, despite having incredible physical strength, must rely on the other, who is more knowledgeable. I’m mostly speculating, but the potential for the relationship between the two, as well as its impact on the story, is very exciting. The fact that people cannot see the potential of it through their bewilderment of a black protagonist in Japan is quite saddening. I would like to conclude by saying that his inclusion was likely not an effect of some woke agenda, but rather, a cleverly thought out narrative decision.

Edward wasn’t recruiting slaves they were criminals and pirates. That’s why Edward appointed adewale as his quartermaster they both worked together to get jackdaw but Edward claimed it for himself before even saying anything to adewale and realized that it might have rubbed him the wrong way. Black flag has been out for over a decade so analyzing the story might give the idea that it’s in no way comparable to shadows but shadows only had a trailer we don’t know its story. It could be very similar to black flags but we don’t know yet the argument that they are the same is the fact that yasuke and Edward are both outsiders to the regions their games take place in who interact with and end up becoming assassins at one point in their lives.

Imma disagree. The argument against Yasuke ignores the fact that there is a woman protagonist of Japanese descent with Yasuke being a historical tie in via a mythologized connection with major big players of the time. I think with that and how much of an interest to certain fanbases it would allow for a character who more than likely works as an AC protagonist due to his outcast nature of being Black, being that most leads were outcast in some way or form. I agree they didn't have to pick Yasuke but im not mad ar it either, because i wouldn't be surprised that if the guy from the last samurai was an AC lead there wouldn't be as much push back.

If Ubisoft knew how to make good games, having Yasuke as one of the two playable protagonists actually seems like a decent choice. It's impossible for him to blend in, he'll most likely have to resort to combat, compared to the other playable character, a native woman, who can't really afford to fight fairly but nobody would even suspect her of being an assassin, so stealth and blending in would be her specialty. But I'm certain Ubisoft is going to have both characters be equally skilled in all abilities, either for some dumb ideological reason, or because they're afraid to make a game where the player commits to a playstyle like this. Hell they might not even have thought of this.

@@shandydasquire That wasn’t the argument though, you’ll hear people list off the games by saying, ‘you play as an Arabic man in Arabia, an Italian in Italy, a Native American in America etc.’ they often leave out ‘a Welshman in the Caribbean’. My point is the foundation of the argument isn’t entirely consistent with the video. I agree it’s historically consistent to play a welsh pirate, he’s also the father of haythem Kenway who is British which is how the third and fourth games are connected. But you can make a historically based argument for Yasuke as well, historically, Yasuke was in Japan and served under a famous military leader so he could’ve feasibly been a Samurai or had that skill set.
@shandydasquire
@shandydasquire 7 ай бұрын
@vincentjeeves as stated in the video, I'm not going to claim to be an expert on Yasuke, but based on everything I've seen about him, his status as a samurai is heavily contested with many people claiming he was just a retainer who carried swords. I also stated in the video that Yasuke being present isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I do think his character should either have been reserved for a sequel game/dlc, or he could have been made into an interactive npc which is consistent with the rest of the games depictions of historical characters. The difference between Yasuke and Edward is that Edward matches his environment due to the nature of pirates being white, even if he wasn't born there. Yasuke is the only recorded black samurai, which distinctly makes him an anomaly even among AC protagonists. It also calls into question the reasoning behind making him a playable character when his own history isn't even concrete.
@vincentjeeves
@vincentjeeves 7 ай бұрын
@@shandydasquire The first part of this is kind of irrelevant, it doesn’t matter whether he was an actual samurai or not, Ubisoft wanted to write him as one and it’s an alt history game franchise, like, Leonardo Da Vinci didn’t actually build a tank, though in an alternate history he could’ve, Assassins Creed has been embellishing historical figures accolades for years but why would it suddenly be an issue now? I agree that if it makes within sense the story for a character to be present they should be, but it feels like your argument against Yasuke is just that you have a funny feeling about it, the fact that his history isn't concrete is a goldmine for the type of story telling Assassins Creed was doing from AC1, the idea that recorded history is not what it seems. And also, yeah he was the only recorded black samurai, the key word there is 'recorded', he does in fact match the environment because he was a real man recorded to be in the time and place the game is set in.
@shandydasquire
@shandydasquire 7 ай бұрын
@vincentjeeves you are the one who brought up how there is a precedent for him being a samurai, which is what I responded to, but you are now saying it is irrelevant? Historical accuracy isn't even an argument I've been that heavy on, as stated in the video with the angry Joe clip for reference. Again, I have no real strong positions on Yasuke with my video mainly addressing the Black flag comparisons. But with that in mind, would you not agree that AC possesses the ability to tell unique stories about fictional characters that are related to their setting, such as has been the case with every game before this point? And if so, do you not think it is uniquely strange to have made such a change to incorporate a character that many feel doesn't represent the unique culture of such a setting, just because he could provide an alternative perspective on the setting? Instead of introducing us to the setting first and then providing alternative viewpoints as the game progresses? Like what is done in every other AC game? Now you could make an argument for Edward here. But it would be wrong. Because Edward does match the culture of his setting, as noted by the other pirates he is companions with. His perspective also changes as he is exposed to the assassins and their creed, and as his values change. Most of this is also bound to be speculation since the game isn't out yet. I don't really see a point in pressing ne further on this since I have about as much info to work on as you do, while already conceding that I have no issue with Yasuke on principle.

Basically everything I said below trying to reason the choices Ubisoft made is now invalid, cause as we've seen in this past month they really managed to make the worst decisions in every opportunity they had during developing and promotion of this game.... they keep claiming historical accuracy while it is clearly not the case, basically writing Yasuke as if he's their original character and remodeling the scenario to fit him and the outsider pov, excluding the Japanese audience. They really put this character in a position adversary to Japanese culture and history, and Japanese people are not that happy with it, to put it lightly. I guess even though I said to not expect much from Ubi, even the little bit I expected from it was too much... ------------------------------------------ (original comment below) Personally I'd say Black Flag is a nice pirate game, but taking in consideration some missions and mechanics it wouldn't be in my top AC games. I played all the way through Unity and just a little bit of Origins and Odyssey and my favorites are still AC1 and Revelations. But I agree that the Black Flag and Shadows comparison is just stupid, people are just searching for any validation. As I've always been a fan samurai/ninja games and almost everything related to Japan, I've been wanting to play an AC game in this setting since around when Brotherhood was announced, and I'll have to say that Ghost of Tsushima filled 95% of that gap to me. It is just way better than what I imagine Ubisoft could ever deliver. But here's how I see it: I don't know how, when or why the idea came to be (and kinda really don't care about what are the true intentions of Ubisoft as a company trying to make money or pushing an agenda), but at this moment, with only the trailer being out, I can't really see the problem with Yasuke, while being black, as one of the playable characters (It seems like people just ignore the fact that Naoe is also there). We've always played as these unkown to the public fictional characters operating in these history changing time periods, and since we don't really know that much about Yasuke I guess it's ok to play as him as it gives the game more freedom. (that would be in response to those saying that they should've chosen a more relevant or well known Japanese Samurai as the playable character). Also always keeping in mind that AC games are not 1:1 with history As I am Brazilian and not Japanese I can't say that much about how they received this, but as for representation, it's not one character in the whole game that will be responsible for showing the whole japanese culture to the players, we have other characters and the setting for that. Since we also have lots of other Samurai/Ninja games out there, if done the right way putting Yasuke in the spotlight could give us a different or at least interesting story of how he perceives the culture or how he came to be what we know of him (but of course, i guess that would be to much to expect from Ubisoft). So from my POV we are not losing potential by having a non-japanese playable character, nor is it detrimental to the "true samurai experience", cause I'm not expecting that much from Ubisoft, I just hope that there will be good stealth mechanics in my Assassin game. To those that are really bothered with this situation, I can't stress enough, Stop expecting to much from Ubisoft, it's easier that way. Ghost of Tsushima just came out on PC and it's really good, the real GotY 2020 to me, and also if you have access to it there's lots of good samurai games on PS2 and PS3.

I really hate this for the world. For the longest time I legit thought the gaming community didn't have any signs of prejudice, but I was greatly mistaken. It was the sam for God of War Ragnarok with the brown girl in it. Everyone doing videos on how it's impossible for this are that and now this. A human being who actually lived and died who had feelings and emotions and suffer at times to only be talked about decades later like he is trash and undeserving to be in a fantasy game. Even Japan pre-order the game at number one on Amazon, and people still claim japan dislikes him in their own history, which the pre-order sells prove to be a lie. Nioh had a white man with blue eyes based on William Adam no one did a video on how he shouldn't be in Japan. No one said how Team Ninja dishonored their country. What a said world we live in. People don't have to buy the game and move on but what hurts is the dishonored for human who actually lived but hated because the color of his skin. I hope someday this mentality goes extinct and we can enjoy all works in life done by the hard work and efforts from good people who want to tell a story their way. For the first time, I am growing to hate the gaming community. Smh

You make good points about black flag, but you're missing the point on shadows. Yasuke is one of two protagonists. Naoe is the shinobi who was tje main focus in the trailer, but no one talks about her unless theyre talking about the blade she's using. It really does seem weird to call out the big black guy and not talk about the woman who is obviously the assassin in this assassin game
@shandydasquire
@shandydasquire 7 ай бұрын
The thing is, as I mentioned in the video, I don't care about Yasuke or the game as a whole. I'm specifically responding to people talking about Black flag due to the alleged double standard held within the community. I could potentially do a follow up on this video when the game comes out and more info is available, but as of right now my only interest is dispelling the incorrect and quite frankly disingenuous comparisons to Black flag. Edit: However, I did want to mention that even though he is 1 of 2 playable characters, and the focus is mostly put on the Shinobi, I don't think it takes away from the criticism that the game has partly put a central focus on Yasuke. I don't think he should be removed, however I think the vest thing to have done would be to make him an intractable NPC (which is consistent with historical character depictions in these games), or potentially saving him for a sequel or dlc. Because by that point, there would be a mainline Japanese game that would keep the core fanbase happy, and I don't think they would have been as hostile to his addition, but that's my thoughts

We ignoring ac shadows cost and the fact that you are playing them more than $100 they will still lock the coolest armor and weapons behind paywalls because Ubisoft is a fucking excuse for a AAA. At this point indi game creators can back games that are 1000 times better.

People who say the AC franchise were never historically didn't get the point. The previous methods of AC story telling was to tell their story within the gaps of history, to the point that it can be debated weather or not these thing actually took place. It took some amount of talent to be that good. But modern iterations took that philosophy out the window and gave up on trying to be historically consistent. Imagine a maze, the previous games poured water into it without affecting the walls and it just fills up the empty spaces. But the modern games are akin to putting a drill through it

I don't think having an African American as the lead for the Japanese game breaks a pattern. He was there along with other slaves. If Black Flag set during a colonial Era can use a Welsh man then I dont see the reason why this can't happen. It's not like this is set in a place where it was a historical impossibility.

Personally I don't care much, AC thrives in a setting where it explores niche histories. A black man in Sengoku Japan is a niche history, Yasuke existed... Samurai or Retainer, he was recorded. The theme of an African slave becomes another "slave" of another master is also in line with the theme of freedom of AC, Yasuke seems like he was only used by Nobunaga who seems to be a Templar, maybe in the end he might be the one to kill him and gain his freedom with the brotherhood, knowing his real life counterpart was missing in history after the master's death. Will Ubisoft be able to reach the potential they set themselves upon? I don't believe it. Concept to me is good, execution can be meh.

I think it's awesome from a historical standpoint that the game is focused on Yusuke and Naoua as yauske was a real retainer and Samurai and retainer of oda Nobunaga and it'll be facinatining to see the story of the sengoku period in assassin creed terms not going to buy it tho Ubisoft got me tripping.

Yeah, I have been called a racist and sexist to say I want to play someone look like me. I just want to ask those men who say if they want to play Asian Assassin they will play the female assassin in the shadows a question. Based on the trend of recent AC games, there is a very high possibility that romance will be exist in this main line game, will they feel comfortable to romance a man in the game as a female character?
@sarko5989
@sarko5989 7 ай бұрын
Buddy, you’ve had a locked character choice for the entirety of AC’s existence. Girls don’t get to play as female Ezio, Connor, Arno, etc. Would you like to know why? It’s because the main characters are not supposed to be representatives of you. You don’t get to customize the physical features of them because they’re their own defined characters. Even within the context of the game it’s made clear that the Animus is used to follow the lives of past ancestors. AC protags are not you, they are their own characters, and all you’re doing is looking at their lives, it’s the equivalent of watching a TV show. So to answer your question, yes, I wouldn’t be concerned with that, because I am not the protagonist.

4:01 so no, u didnt even understood what the debate was talking about. The debate was that racists were arguing how black ppl like yasuke didnt existed in Japan and srgued how it doesnt make sense if they did, and argued that he wasnt a samurai. Then used the ac games as racist excuses to argue how all the protagonists are from and in the same region and places they are from. Ppl use black flag to debunk it to show how hypocritical and wrong they are. When yes the lead isnt from the Caribbean and neither do the other characters who were white. Which u literally just proven Like how yasuke wasnt born nor from japan but they were in those places in history regardless. Like tbise white pirates in the Caribbean even if they werent from there and how yasuke isnt from Japan but was there. That was the point. How did u mised that???

I didn't miss anything, and this is a poor interpretation of those arguments. While there may very well have been racist individuals in those arguments (as there will be for any game no matter the character), the biggest contention that was present was that people found it odd that one of the first playable characters in an AC game with a Japanese setting was black, and then mentioned how the vast majority of other AC games featured characters who were ethically connected to their setting. AC black flag was used to debunk this notion (which would make it an exception to rule), however, the black flag still featured a character that was ethically connected to his setting since the vast majority of pirates were British or American. I've seen a lot of people mentioning how this was done due to a combination of forced diversity, SBI involvement, and a desperate desire to distance the game from the likes of ghost of tsushima which already delved into the samurai setting a few years earlier. People also pointed out how this is the first historical character to be playable which doesn't keep in line with the rest of the series, as yasuke should technically have been an NPC character if things were consistent. But they aren’t and people are asking why. It also doesn't help that over the last few days I've been seeing a bunch of griffters on both sides of the argument using the game as a scape goat for a culture war, so forgive me if I don't take it seriously, but I prefer to keep my focus on the actual comparisons. I've had a similar discussion with another commenter who said that people were specifically discussing how characters had to have been from their location to be playable, making black flag the odd one out. In this instance, I misread the argument, but only in this instance, since I've not seen everyone making this argument, and most people are saying that the character is ethically connected to the setting. More times times than not, Black flag has been a misrepresentation of the argument, with many people ignoring historical accuracy to make a dunk.
