AC Compressor Clutch Not Working-3 Things To Check

This is a video that is geared towards people with an AC compressor clutch that doesn't work. There are 3 things that you should check, in a specific order, to narrow down the problem. You should check your refrigerant levels first, then you should check the electrical components that are connected to the compressor clutch, and finally you should check the actual mechanical components of the compressor clutch. Checking those things will allow you to narrow down the problem, and figure out what has caused it to stop working.

You cannot check the refridgrant level if your ac clutch is not working.

Yes you can. It will have a charge based on ambient temperature. The system balances out and refrigerant has a pressure temperature relationship.

You said if the refrigerant level gets low your AC compressor clutch stops working. Well mine did get low because I had a radiator failure. I changed the radiator and added coolant and the car is operating fine now however the compressor clutch is not engaging. Do I need to reset the compressor or should it sense automatically that the level is back to normal. The car did overheat a couple of times before I was able to replace the radiator.

I have a 1999 Honda Civic hatchback and it has completely no refrigerant, electrical seems fine because if I wire it directly the clutch turns on, how do I fix it do I need to do a wet back ? And add refrigerant?

If your clutch is not engaged you can’t get an accurate refrigerant level

Exactly. These are our of order. If the clutch doesn't engage and stay engaged, you can't do anything about the refrigerant check. The feedbacks in the system should have a temporary override because sometimes one problem can cause the problem that keeps the first one from being resolved.

Everyone come and kneel before the All-Knowing Talking Hand. It tells us that if your A/C is not working then something is wrong. I'm glad the Talking Hand had the car hood open or I wouldn't have known where to start to troubleshoot the A/C system.

Yeah...you CAN'T read the refrigerant level unless the Compressor Kicks ON first! If you attach a gauge with compressor Off, it's just going to read really high pressure, because the compressor isn't activated. I don't think this guy has EVER touched a car in his life......

But if the compressor has no Freon it will not turn on cause of the LPS. So check the Freon to rule out a flat circuit..

What is the it shows refrigerant is empty but when you add some it won’t go in? The meter will read full but it’s because the refrigerant isn’t going down the house, when I take the adapter off all the refrigerant comes out of the L valve. Never goes down in to the system...

that will tell you refridgerant is not the problem .if its low the compressor will cycle on and off check the power going to the compressor if you got voltage with the test light jumped across the compressor plug in across the positive and negitive the clutch is fried .you can further test it by using a ohm meter .now ac clutches convert dc to ac as dc cant travel through a coil so their is a diode across both connections in the clutch .you could have a bad diode as well

My ac won't blow cold air but it will blow hot air. Doesn't that blow? My Ac clutch won't engage. Did I mention that blows.I can keep warm in the winter but cant keep cool in the summer. That sure does blow.

When I jump the breaker, the clutch works and we get cold air. We checked with a multimeter, all of the sensors and the breaker itself. All is good. When we take the jumper off of the circuit breaker area, the clutch stops running completely. We have other breakers in the fuse box that are the same. We changed the breaker and still not getting the clutch to engage. We recharged with the ac stuff with the gauge. It seems the breaker is not opening the circuit or something. Help we are hot!

Think about this for a moment. If a person already knew how to do these three things, that person probably knows what the three things are and their correct order. Not knowing the three essential items you mention is a pretty good indicator the 'how' is also not known. thank you...I didn't know the clutch would not engage when empty... I replaced a condenser along with a receiver dryer...I had it all ready to recharge and noticed the clutch was not going and thought it wouldn't accept the freon without it running until your video saved my sanity at the end of a long day...thanks a ton for takin the time

I think this video will be helpful for me too. When I tried to charge the compressor, I noticed that the refrigerant was very low. Once I turned the ac on and started charging, it took some freon but then I stopped. i am going to add more freon, I think this will work. Thanks GypsykingLeo77 for confirming.

1st Check = PRESSURE SWITCH

1st Check = Apply 12VDC directly to the power wire of the a/c clutch coil ("a/c" here means air conditioning, not alternating current) to see if you get a "click." If not, your diagnosis is a bad clutch coil. 2nd Check = Create a situation where the a/c clutch should engage (engine running, a/c turned on) and check for 12VDC on the a/c clutch power wire. If none, bypass the low pressure cutout switch and see if the clutch engages. If so, recharge with refrigerant. (Either way, reconnect the cutout switch!) 3rd Check = find out why there's no voltage to the clutch power wire -- suspect relays and swap identical relays around to verify or refute. 4th Check = If still no joy, refer to the owner's manual for applicable fuses to check. 5th Check (necessary due to poor design by Honda) = Verify that the blower works on all speeds. If not, replace the blower motor resistor (I know this SHOULDN'T make a difference...but, as mentioned, poor design). Of course, this won't help with things like a shot compressor, plugged passages, or refrigerant leaks, but the scope of the video is a/c clutch problems.

@@ttiwkram How do you check the power wire? I can see where it goes to the compressor, but then it disappears. Is there someplace further up that it has a connector that can be undone? I can't follow the wire itself, because it gets bundled and taped with a bunch of others and then disappears with them around the top of the engine.

TLDR: if the compressor clutch isn't engaging, check the refirgerant, then the electrical, then the parts. Done. That is the information presented, if you want to know HOW to do that, this schmuck doesn't tell you, just stammers on in a loop over a running engine that he uses once. I can't even call it a good use because he doesn't actually show the end of the compressor clutch so we can actually see whether it is engaged or not. Not a useful video as it teaches little to nothing and I am guarunteed to have to continue researching after learning what the video offers. It's okay to waste your own time, but not others.
