Interesting problem and thumbs up for the nice clear video, audio and commentary. I moved to Las Vegas in 2019 and never had a central AC system before. The first thing I did since AC is so important here was start trying to learn how the system works and buy spare parts for common problems. I have an electrical background and ended up changing a capacitor, the contactor and repairing some burned insulation on some wires that the capacitor caused. This was on a Goodman unit that was a little over a year old. I made sure I used an American made capacitor. A few months after that the contactor started buzzing and I had to change it again. I do not blame Goodman since these are generic parts and all manufacturers now seem to use the cheapest imported parts they can source. Thanks from a new subscriber.

What does a hard start kit actually do? Also will the hammer trick work on grounding out compressors that throw breakers?
@coldflashac64432 жыл бұрын
Star kit capacitor will help the compressor start winding on start up and de energize after start up by the relay , lowers electric bill aswell , no a shorted to ground compressor is an internal short meaning one of the winding wire broke and is touching the compressor case sending the voltage to ground and tripping the braker , rhis was a lock rotor amp problem meaning compressor is going off on over. Load cause cant start getting stuck on high amps not moving
@D4x4Bronc2 жыл бұрын
@@coldflashac6443 that was a great explanation thanks for letting me know the winding broke and is touching the case. Excellant video. My issue is a little different. Had a power outage today. Power came back on and then it went off again. When the power came back on I noticed that the a/c was not blowing cold. The a/c breaker switch was tripped. Reset the breaker, heard a buzz, breaker tripped. Reset the breaker again, heard a buzz, breaker tripped again. Went to the compressor outside and the fan was not running. However, the fan spins freely by hand. Now I have the breaker off till I get this sorted out out. Don't know if its a bad capacitor , start switch or contactor.
@coldflashac64435 ай бұрын
The buzz is the compressor trying to start or is locked on lock rotor amps causing the wire to over heat and tripping your breaker this video was the same issue you could also have a bad capacitor if is an older unit recommend having a start kit capacitor , please call a professional

@@coldflashac6443 Had one a/c company come over to trouble shoot. Found it was a bad compressor. Didn't want to get just one diagnosis so I called another a/c company to do the same diagnosis. 2nd person came over a few hours after the first person. The second a/c tech did some trouble shooting and found the same thing. I didn't mention that I already had a diagnosis because I wanted to the 2nd person to fully trouble shoot the problem.

High superheat low subcool? Seems like possible low charge contributed to floodback and you had flooded starts or slugging which may have deprived comp of oil, contributing to LRA. Verify proper cap rating is Copeland spec (I've often found 30's on comps meant for 35's and 35's on comps meant for 30's.) and make sure the dang superheat and subcool numbers are definitely not indicative of low charge (as pictured in the video, they are). The unstable amp draw on compressor on startup may have been oil returning? Not sure though. If compressor actually got replaced (it shouldn't based just on the info in this video), definitely dump the oil and then drill out the evap if oil level turns out to be super low.

@@coldflashac6443 and making 2 changes without testing in between changes leaves you guessing what change fixed the problem. I would guess that just the hammer trick would not have got this compressor spinning, it was the extra boost from the hard start kit. If it still didn't work I would try hitting it when its actively powered and trying to spin.

Seems like if you tap a txv, Compressors and reversing valve does temperary fixes. I know the txv being new itll work for ever The reversing valve 50/50 chance itll stay good or go out bad in the next heat/cool switch But the compressor tells you itll last another 6 months or so
