Salesforce Transit Center has once again opened its third level for transbay buses! We wasted no time in taking one of AC Transit's beloved double-deckers into the transit center on the J. Of course, the entire journey is filmed from the front of the top deck, which provides one of the greatest views you can get of San Francisco as you cross the Bay Bridge.
The transbay line featured in this video, the J, is one of AC Transit's most popular commuter-hour transbay lines and runs from Sacramento St/University Ave, where this video begins, to San Francisco.
Until the upload date of this video, the J, along with every other transbay bus service, used the Temporary Transbay Terminal while the Salesforce Transit Center received repairs. Since the new terminal is now (hopefully permanently) open, the temporary terminal has been shuttered and fenced off.
The new transit center comes equipped with a direct on- and off-ramp to and from I-80, which takes transbay buses straight into the third level of the transit center. This can be seen from the rooftop park at 35:27.
Some bus drivers appear to be confused by the new bus-only off-ramp, as is evidenced by the G bus in front of us at 30:40. They'll get used to it.
AC Transit received 15 Enviro 500 double-decker buses, manufactured by Alexander Dennis, in mid-2018, which first entered service at the end of that year. They can be found on the FS, J, LA and L lines, and will probably roll out to more routes in the future.

After all these years they've learnt a lesson from British road congestion that double-deckers take up half the space on the road.

But even a regular bus takes up less than the 60+ cars that it replaces. It's important to remember that the absolute congestion inducing champion is still the single occupancy car! By comparison a single decker vs a double decker bus is a rounding error.

Reminds me of the double deckers I rode growing up in Sydney Australia. They were exactly the same as the ones in London, as I found out years later when I went to London. Probably made by the same company. These buses make so much sense. Glad AC Transit got smart. And the view from up top, up front was always a thrill for me. I’m sure riders of these new buses agree.

Noe Berengena there's a ton of security there and there's no seating in the main floor of the transit center so you can't really loiter

Well, semis are taller and they fit just fine. In fact the lower deck of the Bay Bridge was designed only for trains (Key System) and trucks when the bridge first opened. It was only later reconfigured to take away the train and truck lanes for cars.

Our downtown's unnecessarily clogged by suburban buses so, come 2021, they're replacing most of them with the advent of complementary metro service here (suburban express, not our city one). What's spent on your glorified bus station there's affording us half of our 26 sealed stations along 42 miles of freshly unobstructed route 🍺

Its ROW's been enacted since the early-80s: shall it become San Diego Trolley-esqueness or one of the next REM phases, choosiness altogether of the either-or calibre.
