What surprised me as I was making this video is the number of places that true parkour-down vaults were not only possible, but also incredibly useful. Gaining the ability to recognize practical vaulting opportunities when free roaming and incorporating it seamlessly into my general movement gameplay has been quite exhilarating. The additional options it gives you and the flair it adds to your movement is really awesome and it has increased the skill ceiling so much for me. And people have the *audacity* to say that the parkour is bad in this game.

@@jcers does unity not have proper ejects?
@jcers4 жыл бұрын
Titular Hero yes and no. Unity has back ejects, which can even be triggered manually, but if there’s some handhold for you to grab onto, you will almost always “snap” onto it, regardless of where you’re ejecting from. This can have Arno rocketing downwards toward a ledge rather than smoothly ejecting away from a wall. That and, like all manual jumps in Unity, you basically have to scream at the game for it to let you do one. As for side ejects, they were removed and replaced with side hops. Side hops can function similarly to side ejects, but they are purely contextual animations and cannot be triggered at will. For me to consider them “proper” ejects, they would have to trigger at will, the instant I touch the button, and function consistently. Essentially, they just need to be the same as in AC1-Rev.

Playing unity for the first time right now and I find the “new” free run system so annoying, yes it’s fast but it’s almost like you have no control, it’s like Arno goes wherever he wants. And trying to escape enemies using it is a nightmare.

Ioan Smith Unity’s movement system has the most potential to make you fail through no fault of your own of any game in the series. It’s kind of paradoxical in that way, isn’t it? The discovery is fun, but at the same time, you have people who have played this game dozens of times and still have no idea of the depth possible with the game’s mechanics, despite having hit a ceiling on one of the earliest playthroughs. I think the best way to handle it is more along the lines of “tell the player that it exists, but let them figure out how to use it”. Salt Snorter what shocks me is how hard the dev team worked on making an incredible parkour system and did literally nothing to tell the player about the amazingly powerful movement actions they have at their disposal. AC2-Rev kind of tries by putting tutorials in the tombs, but because those missions are so linear, most players don’t make the connection that everything that’s done in the tombs is possible in the open world. I’m still shocked that Ubi never put out movement guide videos for the games after hearing constant complaints of characters “randomly jumping off of buildings” and “constantly running up smooth walls”. After watching *one* movement guide for AC1-Rev before I played the games, I was able to move incredibly effectively the second I picked up the game. Oh, what could have been.

When I actually picked up the game and started scouting for places to use it, I realized that there are many architecture/parkour path layouts *specifically designed* for parkouring down using the vault mechanic. They’re not ridiculously commonplace, but you’ll see them often enough, if you know where to look. The fact that Ubi went out of their way to make all of these awesome layouts for parkour that were practically squandered by so many players just climbing straight up the sides of buildings and jumping off of rooftops onto the street to get down is pretty tragic, honestly.

Yet some people still act like the only way down is jumping off the roof and taking damage or slowly climbing down. ( oh, if it isn't clear am talking about the Ezio games)

can't help but love this game... some feelings it gave me have never been replicated by other games. I remember triggering a vault by mistake once, then spending the next 4 hours running around integrating it into everything I could, the feeling of discovering a mechanic the game doesn't tell you about, practicing to use it and being rewarded with new fluid, sped up, useful movements can't be compared to the sort of gameplay feel other games give you... a similar thing happened when I realised the smushed in bits of roof in damascus always let you get to ground level safely if you hop down with just high profile. a thing that let my jaw hit the floor was when I heard leok talk about the precursor of kill chains in ac1, in combat, kill a guard with the hidden blade and a "stun" animation will trigger on a random guard in the group, if you hidden blade him without being locked to him you can keep that stun passing around the group, 1hitting them all. again, the game rewards you for discovering mechanics, giving you the ability to kill a guard every 3 seconds max if you pull it off. these little things about the game's mechanics and its world design make it so much better and so damn replayable. it took balls to integrate things without telling the player about it, they took the risk that most players would never realise, but they took it knowing that the ones that do would have the most amazing time, I respect the fuck out of that, and I can only hope ubi will get those balls back at some point... almost every playthrough in ac1-revelations feels a bit different because I pick up a new trick, mechanic, or use for one of these things that mixes up gameplay and gives me something to experiment and play around with. the fact people say these games are janky, the characters uncontrollable, the systems shallow and so on just shows how much attention and effort went into coming to that conclusion.
@jcers4 жыл бұрын
Yea, I feel the exact same way. That people call these games “simple” or the controls “clunky” absolutely blows my mind because AC1-Rev are probably the least simple of any game in the franchise, considering the advanced movement mechanics they allow for, the stealth techniques they don’t explain to the player, and the options they give the player in combat (and don’t even get me started on how people consider the controls to be clunky, lmao). AC1-Rev are also insanely replayable because of their skill ceiling being pretty high, unlike more recent games, which cap you out maybe 20 hours into your first playthrough. I miss having room to improve _your_ skills in AC, not your character’s skills.

Oy Blech I recently replayed Brotherhood and was pleasantly surprised to find out that I could gallop on horses thanks to the game being installed on my new PC, which has an SSD. Every time I come back to those games, I’m always better, and the game feels different as a result. The same can be said for every game up to Origins, but even Origins still has _some_ things that it doesn’t make obvious (sleep/poison gas, Senu harass, etc). Sad to see the direction the games took, but I think Valhalla seems to be taking a step back into the right direction in that regard, which I’m quite happy with.
@oyblech86714 жыл бұрын
@@jcers couldn't have said it better! origins was okay imo, the story is what made me complete it but the gameplay also had enough appealing factors to keep me interested tbh; besides the lootboxing and partially the weapon system with legendaries and all that, I still had the feeling of being an assassin, I was deadly on long ranges as well as short (assuming I upgraded all my gear :] but really, upgrading hb and globes wasn't so bad, a chore but ok), could clear entire forts while never alerting anyone but if shit went down, willingly or otherwise, I kept being a deadly murder fairy on all ranges; it took more effort but it made me feel like a badass assassin precursor, I hated the fact that social stealth was dead but hide in plain sight apparently needs a credo to get into a murderer's skull... the thing that more than bugs me about odyssey which keeps being massive in valhalla is the overusage of mysterious elements to the point of basically rpg magic... (and breaking animus lore) on the other hand, social stealth and hb instant kills are back and rpg leveling is apparently gone... Oy Blech Valhalla actually shies away from the mythical creature/fantasy routes, at least in terms of what’s actually happening. All it takes is a little practice. I only got this game about a month ago. It’s super rewarding once everything starts coming together. I’ll often find myself just going around the cities, and I’ll do something improvised that ends up looking super stylish, and I just stop for a second and say “That was hot”. I love these games so much.

This was removed in favour of the tackle mechanic, because the buttons conflict. I think the easy solution would have been to only let you tackle if you were on the ground/a flat surface, but...yea, they took out nonetheless.

idk if this is new information for the community but I'll just share a new thing I learned about vaulting just a day ago: you can vault over wooden racks (on rooftops), if it's close to an edge, climb up it, move towards the rack holding forward, HP, legs, and empty hand and altair will vault it like connor and assassins from later entries do fences and such. apparently the animation of pulling himself up a ledge also counts as a "jump" you have to do to pull off the vault but I'm not sure, I still need to do some testing to see if I can get it to work in other ways, if so, I'll let you know.

Cheval mongole a remaster is still nice. Adding in some texture updates and ambient occlusion could go a long way. Hell even subtitles would be nice addition. Just like LazerzZ said in his parkour video, the game isn't the problem, it's the player during these games.
@jcers4 жыл бұрын
Exactly. The movement is very precise and complex, and it has a very high skill ceiling as a result. The best part is the expression possible in these games; the difference in kind you can have between players. The way I move in AC1-Rev looks *very* different from the way others move in these games. My movement in Odyssey looks exactly the same as everyone else’s. There’s nothing creative or interesting about holding “climb” and running in a straight line to your next objective.
@jtadros164 жыл бұрын

Assassins Creed 1 is the first good Parkour Game! 👍
@Chimmy2444 жыл бұрын
Unity might not have the manual side eject, but it's been replaced with a more advanced automated parkour side. Something being automated is more advanced from a programming perspective if anything and given that the parkour side in Unity works well, you really don't need a manual version. The manual version is if anything limited since its the same exact side jump every single time, whereas in unity the side jump animation dynamically will interact with specific objects to the left and right now you. Also there is diagonal movement and a much better parkour down.
@jcers4 жыл бұрын
The fact that Unity does not have manual side ejects and replaces it with the purely contextual side hop removes a lot of player agency. Sure, the programming on it might be more difficult to implement, but it takes advanced movement options away from the player unless they are in very specific contexts. I can’t tell you the amount of times I’ve been doing rooftop parkour in Unity, I see a good side eject opportunity and instinctively perform the button input for it only for Arno to do his little shimmy that is game dev speak for “we don’t trust you enough to give you advanced, unabridged control over your character at all times”. In effect, you’re no longer responsible for your actions, and you’re no longer free to move as you see fit. This is antithetical the Assassin’s Creed itself, which tells the player that “everything is permitted” and that “we are the architects of our actions and that we must live with their consequences, whether glorious or tragic”. Assassin’s Creed used to be about freedom, in both a narrative *and* ludonarrative sense. Making movement options purely contextual flies directly in the face of that. The continual streamlining of the movement controls and removal of player agency over their parkour actions has only worsened over time, and Unity was the initial turning point in that trend.
