"the slave will protect the master" like the addict will protect the object of their addiction and the dependent will protect the object of their dependency. as long as the slaves continue to identify with their slave masters rather than with other slaves, humanity is doomed. our slave masters may be on the right or left. they may be black or white, gay or straight, religious or athiest. it doesn't matter. we buy our slave masters' overpriced, police-state products. we believe whatever lies or insanity our slave masters tell us. we comply with our slave masters' every wish and command. fascists claim having a job makes you independent. I read George Orwell's '1984', and and I thought then that the symbolic picture of Big Brother watching everyone, and all that was happening was not with reference to our country. But, truly, we are going through in our own country what George Orwell wrote in '1984'. We need to pay attention to the warning and core message, 'Let it not happen'. 'It is up to us'. Indeed, it is an onerous and personal responsibility, imperative on each one of us, to carefully guard our right freedom in all its facets.

I'm 57 and the first time I read 1984 was in 1982 in a highschool English class and I remember saying in a class discussion that that scenario could never happen in the United States. I had the chance to reread it ten years ago and it was startling how many things in the book parallel what is going on in the country and the world in general. A passport that you have to carry everywhere to enter almost everywhere-even at the hospital ! Where some people have more rights than others. This is happening everywhere in Europe and the fact that it is so is the justification for all the countries to do the same thing. In Italy and other countries that's working pretty well but in France… not at all. A lot of people are protesting, and more and more each weekend, and I hope that our determination will not decrease until this thing will be removed. I stay hopeful. You can see on YT what the protests look like by searching "manifestations massives contre le pass sanitaire vue aérienne". This is only a view of one of the three protests in Paris. Writing an essay on this subject for school. One thing I think's interesting is that it isn't only the government who can easily see everything you do online, it's also companies. This is something Orwell couldn't imagine when he wrote it, but companies hear everything you say and know so much about you. I remember my brother telling me about a teenage girl who started getting loads of pregnancy test adverts and it turned out she was pregnant. Tiny changes in your behaviour online tell so much about you. It's terrifying.
@MickeyMousePark
@MickeyMousePark 3 ай бұрын
An important part is that these things you speak of government and companies and the public in general can see what you do online..not through some secret method..most of the information is given willingly through social media...given 10 minutes I can select a person and gather a huge amount of personal information about that person.. I have been in IT (Database designer iis my forte i am involved in all facets of software) for over 40 years.i have been screaming at people to not share their entire life online..but of course no one listened ...and now they are angry that that information is being used against them... A few years back i was part of a software development team that created an app that allows large corporations that are promoting or hiring someone for middle or upper management (including C-Level) to do a complete search on all social media platforms and flag comments or posts they have made that would be concerning to the company..the results of something like this is teens and 20 somethings make an edgy inflammatory posts and then 20 years later they cannot be promoted and are stuck in a low end job... This started in the early days of the internet thinking that you can be anonymous on the internet..that myth was never true from the begining..with the spread of social media millions of people decided to share their private thoughts and daily tasks ..then those same people yell and scream when companies and or the government use that information for targeting or advertising etc.. The story you said about a teen girl is definitely plausible ..with a billions data points companies can make interesting comparisons..lets say a teen girl gets pregnant and after she has the baby of course she talks about it on social media ...a company can take that information and track back 9 months and look at what she was doing online..build a standard profile and anyone that fits that profile online gets hammered with targeted advertising..

When I first got to the US and started my first year of schooling in the US. My English teacher told us to read "1984" and do a report about it. As a refuge just escaped from communist Vietnam, reading 1984 was a living nightmare. I wrote the report in fear but with high hope that I was in a free country now and it would never happen. I was wrong. We are now living 1984!

It is people like you who escaped communist countries that may be able to reach those who now think communism sounds like a good idea. Tell them what it was really like and point out how similar what is going on here is to that. It will get far worse, but at least we know what is coming. Get out of cities and go where people are more self-sufficient and less conditioned to go along with all this.

Vietnam was nationalism, just backed by the communism to fight the US n French colonies. The North never installed fear, they were clear they want their country back and not being controlled by foreigners and become another Asian colony. Through all the years Vietnam has been invaded by many countries so I understand why nationalism was gaining support. Ask anyone who were forced into war from the colonies in Asia. Everyone are still against US for taking away their families and forced them into that war. The South picked the US side and got false hope and promises like Afghanistan got. History is repeating again. Facts from my own grandparents and parents who fought in the war.

I found out the other week that my Dad had never read 1984 so I gave him a loan of my copy. Almost as soon as I gave it to him I was like "You know, I should probably read through it again myself", not least because it was seeming to me that this book was looking more and more like a prophecy than a work of fiction the way things are going in the world, so I got a hold of the audiobook and listened to it over the next few days while at work. I think it's too late, I think we are there. I'm not saying it's not worth every bit of effort to fight this shit, it is worth it, but I see no signs of anyone around me taking any notice of what is going on right in front of their nose and when you try and show them what is glaringly obvious if you only pay a tiny bit of attention you are called all sorts of names, insane this, conspiracy theorist that. So sad.

Don’t worry. The kind of authoritarian control that Orwell was concerned about isn’t part of our reality in the free world. We’re, luckily, still miles away from that. Is there things to be concerned about in our reality, that are also things Orwell warned about ? Absolutely - the level of surveilance we are all under is very close to what Orwell feared, and it’s exactly as dangerous as he feared. Some would argue that it’s not the same because it’s private companies that are doing the surveilance - but I don’t agree. It doesn’t matter who is watching you, if you’re being watched that is already bad. Nor can they make the usual “in capitalism every transaction is mutually beneficial” response because there is no transaction, we are not the customer, we are being turned into the product. And finally, since they are all too happy to sell access to the data to anybody who will pay (that’s why they collect it), the government can always just buy their own access, so you’re being watched by the government as well anyway. It’s interesting that they’ve made significant efforts to try and avoid ever handing data over under a court-order or warrant, for example by storing everyone’s data in a different jurisdiction to where that person lives. I’m an incurable cynic about rich people - I don’t believe they did that out of any concern for privacy - they ARE the reason we don’t have any - they did that, because they want governments to have to BUY access to what they surveiled, not get it for free under a warrant. They just didn’t like having to give away their product without getting paid. We may not be living in Orwell’s reality as I stated - but if anything could get us there, products like Alexa is what will. A temporary stay-at-home situation due to a pandemic ? Nah. Societies have dealt with things like this for literally thousands of years, quarantine orders date back to plague outbreaks in the middle ages. The first stay-at-home order in America was issued under the very first congress and signed by President Washington when then capitol Philadelphia lost half it’s population in a cholera outbreak. Nah, COVID-19 is not Orwell’s reality - it’s very far removed from it. Being constantly observed by companies that do not have our best interests at heart, now THAT is straight out of 1984. It’s far from enough to say that we’re in that reality, but it’s a dangerous step in that direction.

In my youth ('70's and '80's), one of my school reading assignments was "1984". To me it was just another book I didn't care about that I'd have to write a report about. If I remember correctly, I just skimmed over little spots of what I felt was a boring book, and never even read the last 15 pages. I am now 60. I look back and truly regret not reading it, processing it mentally, and taking it to heart back then. I look at the world we have today, and I'm SO sorry and regretful I so casually dismissed it back then. Outside my window IS "1984". Orwell was right; he just had the date wrong. I was so regretful, I made it a point to get a copy all these decades later. I want to have it, to read the living example of what this world has actually become. War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength.

It's kind of a mind-blowing content right here. This video is a real eye-opener, it tells and draws parallels between our current society and the dystopian world of 1984. It showcases how totalitarian regimes instill mass fear and maintain control over citizens through force, propaganda, and surveillance. The constant monitoring of citizens, the culture of suspicion and mistrust, and the manipulation of information have created a state of confusion and disorientation. This video is nothing short of a wake-up call, and Winston's story in "1984" serves as a timely warning against the dangers of totalitarianism. The bottom line is we must remain vigilant against the encroachment of totalitarianism and fervently defend the principles of truth, freedom, and individual autonomy. Or at least try to…

The fact that it's been hijacked in the last few decades by perverse and insane people so that now it has no sensibilities and is saturated with everything gross and graphic should be what we should be condemning. Also, that lack of sensibilities is a reflection of society in the past few decades, which has been hijacked by the same people, the extreme left, which is most of the left, which has radicalized and desensitized society, so the abuse of those who oppose tyrany, plutocracy, and conspiracies is not very surprising.

This is truly horrifying and I see all of this taking place in reality more and more. When I was a teen in the 90's the whole idea of adopting any kind of label was just not happening, we rejected it. Todays youth not only loves labels but will make up more to tack on to themselves like standing out and being unique or an individual is wrong somehow. It is the craziest shit to watch take place. The hivemind mentality they possess also is mind boggling to me. Truth, facts, reality can not be "subjective" for any society to succeed. And believing something just because someone with more money or a higher position says so, is insanity.

What are you talking about? Labels definitely existed in the 90s. Maybe you personally didn't use labels, but that doesn't mean that nobody was. More than that, labels usually exist to describe an experience someone is already having. E.g. I was bi before I labeled myself as bisexual, in the same way, a heterosexual is attracted to the "opposite" gender even if they don't label themselves as straight specifically. A label exists to describe an experience that is already taking place.

I would say definitely we were warned about this years ago and nobody cared, apathy is a really dangerous thing, remember the quote 'evil is allowed to happen when good people do nothing'

Humanity now pays the price for our apathy and complacency. Most have put trust in all the wrong places. Sad to watch what we have come to. It disturbs me greatly that few are standing up against this!

What can we do?, What should we do?...start by asking questions knowing your not gonna get the truth. LOGIC!...A male is a Male, and a Female is a female, Up is up, Down is down, etc. Never, ever, ever, trust the police, they are not your friend, they work for the state. Never answer their questions...EVER! TURN THE TV OFF! These are just a few things you can do...I have and do many things for peaceful freedom. KNOWLEGE IS KEY!

I was blessed enough to have a great high school Lit teacher who made this poignant book part of required reading. I never thought this might be what I could one day experience. It could be that this book was only off, prematurely, by just a few decades. BTW, Animal Farm's a pretty decent story, too.

In the book, they re-wrote history so the masses wouldn't know that life use to be a lot better. Now days, they tear down statues so the masses won't know how far we have come.

There are two tier of society: "aware people" and "unaware people". Unfortunately today, mostly people around the world is "unaware", otherwise, it wouldn't have been possible all that is happening.

Freedom... Many people prioritize money for their lives. Some put family at the top of the list. Others maybe enjoy new tech gadgets and video games and orientate themselves that way. But, if you value Freedom, *true FREEDOM, you look within yourself, and don't externalize your validation. i.e. 'I might lose my job if I don't do (insert reason)'... **I'm prepared to lose it! if I don't approve of (insert reason!)** Edit: As you pursue your proclivities, your life begins to take shape. Certain actions reinforce others. A common thread begins to weave its way, connecting the moments and events of your life. All of your decisions influence whether there is a firm scaffolding that supports your modus operandi or a house of cards that comes tumbling down once the jack boots begin their march. I try to think about the core wisdom that comes from powerful philosophical thought, I reflect on the human condition over the course of centuries, then I remove all the bells and whistles of modernity from clouding my perceptions
