I've noticed that the community and coffee equipment companies have all shifted from a focus on great tasting coffee to only focusing on new gear for the sake of new gear. The ion beam and ~$400 WTD have really pushed me away from new grear and toward just exploring different coffee. A change I've thoroughly enjoyed.

I can see this being useful in a Cafe setting where you're more worried about throughput. Same with the spirographic WDTs. But I don't see the value being better for most home users.

There has always been an "audiophile" element to the home barista, people with enough disposable income who value how much they paid for something as much as any other factor. The "it's expensive, so I will convince myself it improves my coffee" or the "it's expensive and I can tell everyone how much I spent on my equipment" people. I see this as a product focused at those types of people.

They’re making a version specifically for the EK43 whatever that means. Feels like they really needed to pitch this to cafe owners. Grinding 50+lbs of coffee through an EK is no fun 😅 If this works well and is reliable it’s almost a no brainer for cafes and roasteries

I guess for me it comes down to "do you have the money" . My grinder is on the medium-end, it costs $700, a good entry level/mid-range espresso machine costs $650. A lot of people recommend not using water to clean your burrs, so when you spray water on the beans, what is in fact happening inside of the grinder? Is it causing residue or caked grounds to compress even tighter into the crevices making the burrs harder to clean? If you're not cleaning your grinder on a daily basis, is that basically allowing direct contact from moisture on the metal in the grinder? Do we get a situation where lets say you clean out your grinder once a month....maybe due to the added moisture, you're getting MOLD growing inside the burrs that isn't necessarily perceptible to the naked eye? The better way, in my opinion, to look at tools like this is to approach them from a pov of everything exists for a reason. Whether it's in a comfortable zone of price-range is a whole different conversation, but the point is that with espresso culture, there are tonnes and tonnes of people who can and DO put down exorbitant amounts of money, imo, to do something a $200-$300 machine can do for a fraction of the cost. If we can host and argument for whether that statement is true or not, then I guess it's arguable that a product like this one is useful as well.

I have one of these. I find that i use it maybe 20% of the time and I find that my grinder (bentwood) actually performs better with RDT so I only use it so I can do 1 spray instead of 2, which could gum up the auger. These tools are more useful if they are built into the grinder because turning it on every time manually is tedious. Also this thing is taller than a bag of coffee so it is an eyesore.

The Acaia Ion tool definitely comes as a quick kludge to chase the hype of the de-ionizer integrated into the Fellow Ode Gen 2. It does something but it definitely isn't worth a random thing to have to aim at my grounds. If Acaia comes with a well thought out integrated grinder design with a de-ionizer that's great but this is not a tool I'd get if I can just get away with RDT.

The cost benefit approach seems like a great way to keep money in the bank account. For the person with something like a Breville/Sage with a built in grinder, this could make the grinder more convenient and it would be cheaper than upgrading to a single dose grinder and extend the duration between bouts of upgrade-itis. Those cases aside, the hobby is made cooler by all the little techniques and tools we use to get the most from our beans. I feel like a vampire hunter with a slaying kit, spraying my beans with a mysterious tincture from a glass bottle before grinding, and then staking the grounds with my wdt tool and sealing them in their perforated coffin with my tamper. Also, dosing funnels.

I use RDT myself but a big reason I got the ode gen 2 for my mom is that it has an ionizer built in. I could try to get her to RDT but it's easier to just not even have to think about it. She only ever does French press so no need to wdt so the ionizer is all she needs. I'm not entirely convinced by the acaia thing but I do hope we see more grinders with built in ionizers going forward. It's not necessary but it's a nice addition imo

Honestly I’m not a fan of the abundance of new espresso puck prep gear since 99% of it is just pure gimmick or tacky. I just grind my coffee and then wait a minute or so before using bellows and any tapping before tamping. Most static dissipates in this time in my setup. I use this time to do minor prep work. I picked a grinder that is not prone to generating static, trapping or spraying grounds. I have no need of even spritzing with water.

I think many entrepreneurs have perceived (correctly) that many home baristas are not making excellent-tasting espresso every time from their equipment, and those looking to solve their issues in espresso-making with any 'new doodad' in lieu of buying more capable essential equipment (machine, grinder). Secondarily is the market of those always looking to throw a few (or a lot of) money to obtain the 'latest and greatest' regardless (or in spite of) of their espresso-making skills. These two sets of folks are what drives the advent of most new doodads.

The point of the R&D and marketing somehow bringing this to production, while ignoring that it only addresses the grounds once having left the chute, is certainly valid. And raises the question of it only really addressing part of the static issue.

Great post, I think what you're discussing goes way beyond the Ion Beam, in the quest to buy the next great coffee making tool and upgrading the tools we have, we run the risk of losing sight of the purpose of all this and that is to enjoy good coffee, with all the gadgets and gizmos it can take over 20 minutes to make a single cup of Joe, I'm as guilty as anyone alse for this. So lets get back to doing the minimum required to get hold of this great tasty drink however you take it.

It baffles me how this would even help with the retention aspect. Retention is what is left behind in the grinder and does not come out. The ionizer is not going to deal with it. At best it will redirect some of the particles clinging to the shoot into your portafilter. But I have yet to find a grinder which has a larger retention by particles clinging to the exit shoot than within the grinder itself.

I am a home user and use RDT all the time in my filter brews. It works and cost me nothing as I repurposed an existing spray bottle. I always look for the simplest and most state of the art solutions. Just think how many great beans or how a grinder upgrade you could get for the costof an ion gun. As Hoffmann said ages ago, grinder manufacturers should integrate the ion tech into thier grinders or find other ways to eliminate static.

I can see how the product appeals to those with an OCD tendency, and let’s face it, many home baristas have OCD tendencies. What’s weird is that the product doesn’t ship with an elegant stand, integrated with the scale. Rigging something with a mismatched camera tripod, duct tape, and bailing wire is the opposite of what an A-type barista wants on their bar. Building the feature into the grinder seems to be the better solution. It would not only look better, but it would eliminate charging and turning it on and off separately. Just make ions when the grinder burrs turn. Easy! Does it make better coffee? Probably not, but if it de-clumps, keeps the bar cleaner, and eliminates the RDT and WDT steps, removes those tools from the workspace, adds no visual clutter, and no manual steps, that’s a win. But it needs grinder integration, not a battery to charge, a setup to design and build, and yet another switch to handle.
@jauntus1

It’s the same for the Orbit grinder. The single dose grinder…that is also grind by weight? Released without a hopper, you could dump an overdose of beans and still get the perfect into the portafilter, but then you have excess in the grind chamber that you’d have to sweep or grind out. Without a full sized proper hopper, I just don’t get why you’d want to pay for the extra scale.

I see it being useful at a cafe environment more than for home. Grind 200-500gms of coffee or larger batches is a super messy job ok ek43, there is heavy static and grinds fly all over the place make it difficult to use zip lock on the pouches. I see this product fits very well in commercial environment but yes, the cost is high and also such long protruding thing sitting next to the grinder is not going to be pleasing to look at.

I bet there’s people who want to buy this. There’s also people buying the weber wdt tool that beyond looking cool and premium doesn’t really provide a benefit over manual wdt as a home user. So to me this essentially comes back to the conversation of how much do you need to nerd out and spend on this hobby? So if people want to do that: fine. I personally don’t see why I should buy one just as with the weber dwt tool or with overly expensive tampers if something more low tec and cheaper does the job perfectly well.

I share the feeling that the specialty coffee scene has gone quite far in the last few years with regard to equipment. Since single dosing grinders are such a hot topic this proces has accelerated exponentially in my opinion. I have both grind on demand and single dosing grinders and to be honest I still make the best espresso with my Mahlkönig Peak! There are a lot of people returning to on demand grinders because of the workflow and the non existing taste differences in most cases which of course depends on a lot different variables. In the near future I would like to see also more videos about on demand grinders and the comparison to single dosing grinders.

I make coffee about twice a week. Weird, I know. I just don't find I need coffee to get me through my day and prefer it as a calming drink, something to consume on lazy days. I bought the Fellow Stagg X (as I rarely have guests to share coffee with), their Atmos kit (which have begun collecting dust as I freeze my coffee beans now), the original Ode Grinder (still a staple of how I brew), and an inexpensive electric kettle. The idea that there are people spending over $10,000 on a home coffee bar in gadgets alone is insane to me. I just don't understand the fascination.

Typically how I buy my stuff is if it something I will use, how much added benefit do I get? Does it cost more or less? For example, a very nice tamper can be $100+, but I could also get one for cheaper. Uneven tamping can make your espresso bad. How do I fix it? Leveling tamper. My Decent tamper was $120, compared to their non-leveling which I think was steeply discounted for $70. Was it worth $50 to not worry about uneven tamps? Yes. I needed that tamper anyway and it added consistency and time saving to my workflow and it has been a great tamper ever since. This example is what I go by when I buy stuff. Or if I am a skeptic, I'll buy a cheap one before getting a nicer one if I find the premium feel is worth it. Like I might buy a Sworks WDT tool after having owned the 3D printed model since I am well sold on WDT

I'm not getting the ion beam because its ungainly physical presence and its price, not because overall the ideas of ions for reducing static is bad. I think overall its a good idea because it got other manufacturers thinking of using ions to controll static. Many grinders have some kind of device to cotroll static but sadly a lot if them make it worse. I removed the anti static device from my SJ because it caused clumping and retention. Turin have an ion generator to reduce static in their df83 vII and if that works it is essentially invisiable and doesn't require batteries. Before i knew that, i had pruchased an ion small generator to try out and see if it can reduce static. If it works i will be installing it in my Frankenstein SJ. Although rdt is simple, if I dont have to do it, thats a benefit. I dont like the damp bean weighing cup that then cant be used to grind into as its damp. This means i need two cups, one to dose and one to catch grounds.

I have no interest in this tool, but I think I am the small segment of the home market where it could make some sense. I've had my espresso-focused grinder since before single-dosing was all the rage. I have ceado 64 mm grinder with a hopper. It has pretty significant retention/exchange, and I don't single dose with it. I do WDT, and I use RDT with my pour over focused grinder (the Ode). That said, I don't think there are many of us out here who are relatively serious home espresso enthusiasts who DON'T single dose. If/when I ever do make another large coffee-related purchase, it will be to get a good single dosing grinder. (Maybe by not buying the Ion Beam I can pretend I've already saved 400 dollars towards that new grinder)

As an Orbit owner, this product made me really mad. I felt like I got really cheated in a sense. I have one of the first 30 units they ever dropped, and my biggest complaint with the grinder has been the mess. It's quite bad compared to other grinders in its class imo, even with RDT. It looks and feels to me like they saw what Fellow did on the Ode 2 and just scrambled to be in competition with them. The result is a very ugly and obnoxious looking piece of equipment that feels like a rushed afterthought. It was made to fit on the Orbit, but it's not even color matched. And to top it off, it's expensive. This is the kind of thing that I felt like, especially as an early adopter, Acaia could've done something like offer it at a discount early to early adopters of the Orbit or something. But they didn't do that either. it just feels like a giant middle finger to people like me, and it sucks to have to pay so much more to fix a problem that shouldn't be a problem at such a premium price point.

@@wsrobert32 I had unit #43 before sending it back due to the grinds in the dial issue. Prior to that I had also gotten an ion beam. RDT worked very well and I had very little mess with my unit. After getting the Ion Beam I have zero mess with no RDT and the replacement unit I got no longer has the dial issues. Truth be told, the Ionizer has been fantastic, I'd say it's only flaw is that it doesn't turn on with the grinder and you need to turn it on separately. Just looking into my catch cup shows how good the Ion Beam works, weeks of use and there isn't any residual coffee grinds in the cup. Even when using RDT the catch cup would build up some charged particles of coffee after a while. I agree with Sprometheus's take here, but I really don't think the Ion Beam was the product to demonstrate it.

I mean, if an ionizer is built in to the grinder, fine. If it is easily moddable like turning a DF83 V1 into a V2, also fine. Having an extra thing sitting on my work surface that costs 150 bucks, no thanks

It seems like a solution in search of a problem. Or, even more appropriate, seems like a company introduces a product that alleviates a nuisance, at an elevated price that they know coffee nerds will pony up for.

Ive got some hand grinders for the first time and I'm curious how safe it is to use a water spritzer with them. They seem to warn against using water, but I imagine it has to be safe on hand grinders if it's safe to use on the electrics that probably use similarly made burrs. Is there a particular sprayer you like to use that is food-safe?

The assumption you’re making is that everyone is bought into RDT. I for one acknowledge it’s effectiveness but am unwilling to put misted beans in my grinders and I’m not convinced that it doesn’t negatively affect flavor by exposing grounds to unnecessary moisture.

I think in this case it’s easy to say that it's not doing anything special, but it would be a more definitive decision if the science was explained vs what a spritz of water does. Are they truly equivalent? Or does this tool bring something additional to the table that could make it worth the investment?

I dont think it's a shop item.. They are fast volume situations and they just clean up when they can or at the end.. This would get knocked over and on the floor when moving fast. you get sloppy. This is for people who are at home and have time and enjoy the process.

Like tools in woodworking or mechanics I look at how much frustration and time it will save me and then I weigh it against the cost of the tool. As it stands the ion thing is real and does work but adding another thing to charge, find space for on my bar, and get it into the correct spot every time I just can't be bothered. That being said if it's tech that's baked into a product already it is a selling feature. I really like it in my Ode grinder but that wasn't the thing that made the decision for me. So nah this thing isn't worth the money for me.

It seems like the technology may be useful but not as a separate expensive product, instead it should just be built into a grinder, whether for home or commercial use.

This looks like the latest shiny toy for people who think they can impress people with all the toys on their espresso bar. On the other hand, when the zombies come and you can zap them with your ion beam that will probably be a really good thing. The rest of us will just have to make the zombies a latte...

An ioniser is a great tool in my opinion. I have a mazzer super jolly moded for single dosing, works pretty good but there's a lot of statis even with rdt. So i looked into ioniser, if i adapt one my self it would cost me around 20 bucks. But i'm lazy, looked out for the acaia one, first things that anoys me, was that this is effective only after the shoot. But my static issue is in the shoot, since i have this big and in my opinion, beautyful funnel on my super jolly, that was my first issue. Then the fact that this is as pricey as my grinder, that i got used, i was stunned. I mean for this kind of money i'll rather save a few bucks, sell my grinder and get some df with integrated ioniser, or go the diy road

You know, Sprometheus once made a video on distribution tools and you chose a $100 tool that's not easy to get your hands on as his favorite. Is that doing a better job than a $5 tool? Probably not. What's the difference between that and this?
