Just got mine last week. After not playing for 25 years, I tried 2 cheap pockets from Amazon. Keys sticking/creeping was a major problem. I picked up the small bell which was about $40 more than the Amazon junk. So far it's holding up great. Getting it in tune is difficult... But that could be me as well. Love you videos and proud owner. Glad I found your channel. I practice 1-2 hours a day and hope the novelty doesn't wear off anytime soon. Now to listen to that Adams Copernicus for the 10th time.

your ombouchure is great. The tone coming from the trumpet is very clear with no noticeable buzz, whistle, or excessive whooshing sounds. Definitely a plus compared to a lot of intro to pocket trumpet videos I've seen.

I just love your playing, and I enjoy your detailed comments on the horns you demonstrate. I know it must be difficult for you to say a particular instrument is a dog, but I listened for a few months and I think I got things sorted, then chose a Yamaha 8 series EM Mark 2 that you demonstrated, based on your comments. Wow. Such a fabulous instrument and a joy to play. I cannot thank you enough for these videos. If ever I am looking for another horn more for the classical music which I am playing, I am keeping notes on all the trumpets that you demo and which resonate with me. Thanks again. Now, I hope you tell us how you got to play how you play. Chris from Australia.

@dachanist4 жыл бұрын
From my experience, the cheapest horn I own that I enjoy playing is a 1956 Martin Indiana cornet that I paid $15 plus shipping for. The main reason I play it is because it plays nice and quiet with loose slots and a free feel up high. It wasn't made as a "pro" horn and has plenty of quirks but it works very well for what it does well.

Are the pocket trumpets difficult to tune?
@austincustom7 ай бұрын
I think the Manchester, Schagerl, Carol Brass mini (not in this video IIRC) and Brasspire pockets we stock here at ACB are all good, solid instruments with fine intonation (for a pocket). I use a Carol Brass mini when I travel these days and they are fabulous. Here's the link for the one I use: www.austincustombrass.biz/the-adorable-carolbrass-mini-pocket-trumpet-in-lacquer/ (I highly recommend using the Ante Mute with this horn as well)

Hey, Trent! I’m retired at age 68. I dropped out of trumpeting about 4 years ago because, between sidemen who won’t rehearse to venues that don’t want to pay, I tired of the nonsense of leading my own band. But I miss it. I bought a Phat Puppy as a treat and reward for returning. Flugelhorn intonation is often suspect, but the Phat Puppy seems to be worse than others. I’m training myself to make it in tune as part of training my chops and my ear. Do you think that the AR weight would help that instrument?

Do the piccolo trumpet harmon mutes fit in the small bell pocket trumpets?
@austincustom5 жыл бұрын
Good question. Not sure as we don't have a piccolo harmon mute in stock.. but the piccolo practice mutes fit nicely in the small bell so I can assume the Harmons would as well.

Benge made 3 or 4 CG pocket trumpets in silver. Given the super-thin metal, they ruined many bells trying to make these work, then gave up. A friend landed one at some point. Amazing. See if you can get hold if a cadeceus pocket trumpet. Smallest possible.

The originals are great if you want the commercial sound. The reissues by which are actually made by schilke, I’ve never tried but have really mixed reviews. Most stuff says they aren’t exact copies of the originals though and a lot of people say they don’t play in tune and are not as good. Legends brass makes some good copies though and some other companies do too. I’ve got a legends which is great but it isn’t supposed to be a jet tone so I don’t know how they’re jet tone copies are but they should be great too.

ACB Large Bell Pocket makes a ton of sense for a kids first student horn. You don't ditch it when you get a step up or pro horn, its closer to the face, so easier to hear, closer to the face so less arm/shoulder strain, fits a mute, looks cool to non trumpet players, has strong busking appeal, it's affordable, It has nice new laquer so no kid bitching about the other kids having shiny horns, fits in a backpack... That Schagerl sounds great, but for whatever it costs I'm sure I'd be in the preowned section of your store. Schagerl sounded better to me than the Brasspire tbh.
