Accented Cinema - Episode 53
It's time to pay my respect to the living legend himself: Jackie Chan. Many things can be said about him: Fights, stunts, humor, dramatic acting. But there is one thing about his craft that rarely gets mentioned: Selling a hit. It's not the most glamorous thing in the world, but it is an essential part of any fight scene, especially Jackie Chan fight scenes. Today, I'll attempt to break down the technique behind the seemingly simple act of getting hurt.

Hey! I gotta say, I really appreciate the work you put into these video essays. I especially enjoy this one, since Jackie is one of my childhood heroes. Were from very different backgrounds, but I was able to relate to and root for his underdog characters/fights. I'm a Haitian American and know a bit about being an underdog. The essay brought up amazing points and great memories for myself. Will look for one of his films to watch and look for to showing some to my daughter. He is a great man and I want to thank you very much for honoring him in this way. Much blessings and success to you my friend!

I will die and I will fail this movie, and have died doing something foolish, for what I loved, and I love this, and everyone is watching, waiting for me at the bottom. I only have one chance, so I will hold on, if I die at the bottom, I will die with this in my hands..." It's the only way I could see someone doing that. The mind isn't so strong that it can cling to life through that kind of pain. Jackie did an interview in an english moviemag 12years ago or something like that. He was asked what the difference between Hong Kong and US action scenes and the stunts was, Jackie replied; "In America they meassure everything. How fast does the car move. How long is the distance. When does it hit. In Hong Kong? The director says can you do this? You answer yes." @@GameFuMaster TLDR: it's not worth the time or money needed to make up an award for stunt people. My point is these awards are a means for the people hosting them to profit off of too. And no-names somersaulting guys will not pull in views. so there is no point in making one. Not to mention that the stunts getting obsolete with CGI. There's probably not even enough good stunts a year to make up a meaningful awards ceremony. Not only that, the cost of hiring reputable names in the stunt world is probably high, if you want to hire people like Jackie Chan or Tom Cruise to boost recognition of the awards.

@@isaabdullahi9097 I kinda think that Jackie Chan is a talented actor who knows how to fight, while Jet Li is a talented fighter who knows how to act. The core element of Jackie's fight scenes is acting, he knows everything that makes a fight scene looks realistic and interesting. And his style of comedy also makes him a unique action star. The core element of Jet's fight scene is his large sets of fighting styles. There are interviews in China where martial artists who taught Jet Li how to fight certain martial art styles get amazed by how fast he learns them. Instead of having a unique style, he has multiple styles that can fit multiple roles. In The One, he literally plays two versions of himself and the final fight scene sees him use two different martial art styles (Xing Yi Quan and Ba Gua Zhang).

I love your videos man. It makes me look at stuff and realize the what and whys off a movie, especially hong kong action flics, which are highly underestimated. Your videos are like a present to us movie dummies and the action movies industry too.

I'm just a layperson, but you've made watching movies so much more enjoyable for me. I've gone back and watched so many movies to enjoy the new perspective. You've also introduced me to dozens of Chinese movies I would not have otherwise known about. I am constantly sharing your videos with my friends. Thank you so much! P.S. I would absolutely love if you did a video essay on Tampopo.

Jackie actually really reminds me of Goku in the way he fights for fun and how most fights have back and forth between who is winning and losing

Great Video, I have watched other videos about Jackie and you managed to put your own stuff into it. I don't feel so bad that I write a whole paragraph about Jackie's hair in 7th grade when writing an essay on my role model.Lol

This is what makes Jackie so special. He gets hurt, he reacts to the crazy stuff he does. He will do an insane stunt and look as astounded that he made it as the audience does. You know he's incredibly skilled, but he still barely scrapes by when it comes to his fights. Another thing he will do is always start at the bottom. He'll have some kind of disadvantage to overcome. He'll be on the ground or fighting multiple guys. He's always the underdog, even if he's so well trained and so skilled at fighting. It never feels like he's breezing through fights scenes. It feels like he's trying to just stay alive.

Jackie vs Benny the Jet is my favorite fight scene of all time for live action. They both move so fast and it feels real while being highly stylized. I'm not the least bit surprised that you pulled multiple examples from that sequence.

I feel like I have to say this may be one of your most underrated videos. While the discussion on how Jackie Chan sells a hit isn't new, the part about how a fight scene needs to be a vector for the story is critical. I feel like it's something that is so often missed these days when fight scenes are written by the B team or only occur in the script as [They Fight].
