IKR, I think is because there are aware of their mouth movement, like where to place their tongues, how to open their mouth, etc. Native speakers are not aware it just reflexes. That is why voice coaches are the best people to learn from if you want to lose your accent and not from a native speaker.

@@linking932 Let me clarify what I mean. Yes, you still be able to understand a native depending on your level of English, the idioms you understand, the speed at which the native talks at. You might even learn new vocabulary, correct grammar, pronunciation and in time, be able to improve in your speaking and written English. But you won't be able to reduce your accent if you have one (if that is your goal ) at least not from a native English speaker. The reason is they don't know the proper tongue placement, the sounds to make, the phonetics, the correct size to open the jaw, linking, word and sentence stress or the intonation. This is because they have been speaking English or whatever language you hope to learn from the native their entire lives and so It becomes a reflex. They mouth just open to the right position and their tongue moves to the right position when they want to produce a word or sentence as well as making the correct sounds. For you to get rid of an accent you need special training from a voice or accent reduction coach. These people are aware of the sounds and how to make them.

abby Sand got you, and yeah you're right, also they don't know the phonetic symbols, I've asked natives about that and they just say: what are you talking about? haha they're not aware of that, they just make the sounds automatically

When it comes to accent reduction the secret is - go to an acting school. This is where they show you how to work on your accent. Then of course you work on it knowing exactly what to do. Not just "work hard" without a clue. Everything else is secondary.

I can still hear your native accent, but only on certain sounds you say. You're a really enthusiastic teacher and are inspirational to those wanting to be fluent and communicate well. You've done a great job. I also teach the American accent as well as other accents, so I feel I can comment intelligently about this stuff: the ear cannot always hear what the mouth needs to say. idk if it's just me but like i'm realising i speak English at my very best when i'm on my own and nobody's listening to me. Also when it comes to talk to native speakers i get self conscious and i tend to lower the tone of my voice. last but not least i speak better at night than in the morning when i wake up. how is that even possible? is it just all in my mind? could someone give me a piece of advice? has anyone got through that too?

Younger96 that's what happens to me always. When I'm alone or when i sing or something my English is good. When I'm with people I get self conscious and I start to say things that i myself don't even understand.

That happens to me too, maybe the reason that cuz we spent a lot of time practice our speaking skills alone, so we are good, but when it comes to speak with others, face to face and public, we forgot everything and get lost cuz we actully didn't used to speak face to face yet, so we need to speak with ppl more and more. When i speak with someone, the first 3 mins always hard to me, but then I feel comfortable and can speak without any problem. So next time, just keep speaking till you reach the time that you dont find any problem.

I've been living in the US for several years, however, I've never gave a crap about changing my accent. I felt like I was betraying myself, my language, my country, my culture... why do I need to try so hard to be American, why should I alienate myself to a culture that I don't even like??? However, I just got a fancy job in a fancy company in the USA...and my accent is killling me, my white American coworkers are understimating and ignoring me most of the times. So, since I'm not able to change the world or Americans, now I'm here watching your videos and trying so hard to improve my accent to success on my career! Thank you for taking your time . I'm sure there are many like me struggling with this!

I think it's fine not to lose your accent if your English is understandable globally, I mean not only for people in native English-speaking countries but also non-native English countries. However, some people in countries barely speak English like Japan where I'm from, have really strong accent and intonation not enough to be able to communicate.（at least smoothly or comfortably）. The minimum understandable accent is needed for us and when we try to get that, we study British English or American English in most cases. What if you go get a job and life in the US with the accent that's difficult to understand and have no willing to improve it and fit in, wouldn't you feel rude and arrogant? I guess you are from a country where ppl speak English sometimes and you can communicate, so no need for it. I just want to let you know the other situation. Being proud of your accent is great, I also find it beautiful for ppl having each accent speaking one language, but I don't think changing accent is not necessarily betraying my language, country or culture if it's not the first language. Although English is different from other languages, the desire and goal of a language learner is fluency as in grammar, vocab, pronunciation, accent and so on in general. Most language learners are working on how to sound like a natives as much as possible. To be honest, I'm pleased to be told that like "You sound like natives", and ppl take it as a compliment right? I feel it's cool when someone speaks second and more Languages without an accent. Still, I think there is no need to be like natives for Language learners. just I feel it's cool. Changing our own mother tongue accent would be perhaps betrayal though. One question, why do you work for the country you don't like the culture in there? Just because you can get a fancy job? I don't know your situation at all, so don't know whether you come to dislike the culture because of those coworkers or you don't like the culture by nature. Either way, I think you are in wrong place, bad for yourself and bad for your coworkers and neighbors. A person comes and gets a job and a home, like "I don't even like this cultureeeeee". Do you welcome them? Even if you're pretending that I like this place!, I think something leak out from you and they feel it. The U.S. is melting pot of many nationalities, but still American, their country. Think it as yourself and your country. Ignoring someone is unacceptable as human being, It's their fault obviously no matter what, but the cause of that might not be your accent. I know lots of people who are not American, have an accent and work in the states, but I've never heard of them been given the cold shoulder or disrespectful actions. I know many foreigners who work in Japan, and off course most of them have an accent in Japanese. I and coworkers never make fun of them or ignore them because of their accent.（plus no matter reasons） If you are treated coolly, because of just an accent, They are the jerk. You don't have to improve your accent in my opinion. You don't have to be changed, they need. Sorry, I got off track.. I hope you or someone who read this all the way understand my English. No need to get my point, it's just my opinion and practice of writing English. Good luck on you career. Thank you.

The thing that I love about your videos and your way of teaching is the ‘intimacy’ and ‘emotion’ that come with both. You make videos telling us trying to better our accents how to be more confident and not shy, you give advice, tell us how to make sound but you also try to put yourself in our shoes and validate our feelings if we’re insecure or whatnot you don’t just mechanically say ‘do xyz and thats that’ your way of teaching/videos is very personal (ok personal that was the word I was looking for!). I love you. You give me hope. My original language is Spanish. After many years in the US, I am able to communicate and most of what I say is understood. But it frustrates me the slow pace. My accent is still very heavy. My daughters keep correcting me and making fun of me. I guess I have to follow your advice on challenging myself and being disciplined with my learning and practice.
