Hadar, I also think that even when you find your pitch, the voice changes at least a bit... I can feel a intense vibration in my throat while I speak English and when I speak portuguese (my mother tongue), I don't feel that much. It feels like my voice comes from my chest and not from my throat.

As we used to hear from you in English, I thought for a while ,when u spoke in Hebrew as if you had been an English native speaker but NON Hebrew native one 😂😂.. Secondly, only NOW ! I'm Polish and it is the same with me. When I speak English I kind of feel like different person. I know some Russian and it's the same when I speak in this language and then I feel a bit different from both my Polish and English "personalities".

I only got comfortable speaking English after I read 7 books out loud for 2 or 3 weeks, I read out loud in English for years but not that much in a really short period of time and because of that the muscle of my mouth and brain got used to it, and it's never a problem anymore, I can speak for hours now

I don't usually comment on videos but I feel compelled to do so now. I have a good command over written english, my vocabulary is close to a native's, but I have always struggled with speaking it. I have no problems with grammar or pronunciations, and yet something was amiss. I never felt comfortable talking in English and I could never pinpoint the reason why. I mostly just avoided talking in English unless it was absolutely necessary. I saw your video, and I felt like you were talking about me. You have accurately described everything I feel. And I didn't even know that all I had to do, was correct my pitch to my natural level to feel more comfortable. Your video has been a great help to me, and all I can say is thank you!

Fully agree... It actually goes further than just because you do not feel comfortable with the language or nervous... Every language has its own sounds and that's what gives us the feeling of having a different tone between languages.

watermelonxxx, I think it’s more than that. Italian and Spanish have a similar phonological system because they are related languages but English doesn’t. In Spanish and Italian sounds are generated at the tip of the tongue, while in English it is generated on the back of the tongue. Try the R sound in each language and you’ll see the difference.

As a french, I noticed my voice changes when I'm speaking English or Spannish, because French is quite neutral in tone when English and Spannish are more musical languages. Brilliant content. As a native Arabic speaker living in the US stage 1) my voice would get higher in pitch. I discovered that I didn't feel comfortable with that. 10 Years later stage 2) I practiced dropping my pitch to my natural Arabic pitch, and that felt more comfortable, yet it didn't provide me with the ability and comfort to express varying emotions. Stage 3) I realized my tongue gets tense when I try to express varying emotions, so I started to relax my tongue whenever I'm aware of it, only 1 day in and it seems to be working wonders! It even improved my voice in Arabic! Your other videos helped me, too. Thanks a lot!

our voices change in part because of different vowel shapes in different languages. like when i speak french, i find my voice is lower, because the vowels tend to need to resonate more in the lower/center of my mouth vs. english's (respectively) pretty bright vowels. our voices might also change because of where emphasis naturally falls with most words (in french, it's almost always the ends of words or sentences, for example) or in different parts of a sentence. just some food for thought!

I also thought that the vowel nature in each language is a key in different voices of the same speaker. Though I don't know much about French or Hebrew. Hadar's voice in English sounded a bit higher because of the variety of English vowel sounds (esp. the pitches and the lengths) while Hebrew vowels sounded quite short to me (I can't analyze other characteristics of Hebrew vowel sounds---I'm just a lay person).

In my own experience, when I am not paying attention but I am stressed while speaking, my pitch goes to high and annoying. After getting aware of that circumstance, I started doing exercises speaking in Spanish and English in the same sentence. After hearing myself after relaxing, I like mi voice better. I have a story with one friend, English native speaker, trying to have a conversation with me, and I could hear rhe same weird and annoying pitch that I do when I I am stressed, so I couldn't tell him and his conversation sounded so much better. That's why, when I read the title I got so connected. Amazing video!!!!!!!

When it comes to fluency - I got a lot better after practicing English tongue twisters. I know it's strange yet while practicing tongue twisters there's an incentive to speak in a faster pace and to connect or link sounds that require effort to place together. There's also the fact that one is going back to the basics in terms of differentiating sounds that otherwise might sound the same to a non-native English speaker. Some people think it's a waste of time - it worked for me.

Right on, Hadar! I'm a bilingual live announcer / MC / voice actor in Japanese and English, and before I started my career, my American voice-over teacher taught me about finding your optimal voice pitch using a similar technique to humming. In the Japanese language, on the other hand, what is considered a good pitch is way higher because a good voice is supposed to sound young, joyful, and clear. I think my body has adopted the optimal vocal range over the years and I speak both languages in the same way, but it takes time. So don't pretend to speak like someone you're not though having a role model is all good. Your voice is your asset.

It's definitely not just about the different intonation, shorter vowels, different sounds, it's about your voice placement. It's different. Your voice is beautiful in both languages though, clear, rich, and confident. My favorite videos of yours were "Understanding American English vowels - Masterclass" and "American intonation - what they don't teach you in school" until now but I am not sure anymore! I think this one wins! It's brilliant! ✨✨✨ I've listened to different explanations about the voice placement, but you have a magical way of explaining things, and things usually "click" when I hear your take on a certain topic. I'm pretty confident while speaking English, but I don't think I've found my optimal voice placement yet. My voice sounds pretty much the same in Serbian and English. I'm not saying that my "Serbian" voice doesn't sound good in English, it does, but I feel there's room for improvement. I think I can find a placement within my voice that will serve English a bit better. I will try the humming exercise and watch this video again and again. I'm interested to learn more from you about this topic. It would be cool if you could share more exercises for finding the "optimal voice". 💕💕💕

I’m working SO hard on my English at the last two years, reading so many books (aloud) on a daily basis just to find my own English voice (indeed it’s different from the Hebrew one exactly like you mentioned). It’s a struggle indeed ! There are days where things works well, days where I feel comfortable reading using my own voice, though at the other hand, the opposite exists as well (like today for instance) where I literally struggle to utter a ‘reasonable’ English word. Honestly I feel like my personality changes when I speak English. But this also happens to me when I speak in an Austrian dialect (my native language) and high German.

My first impression when you were talking in Hebrew was that I found the intonation quite similar to Dutch, even some consonant pronuntiation. :P Interesting language to learn though, I always was curious to learn it. :)

After watching many of your videos for a few months now I understand why you mastered English so well, it's because you're Hebrew, jew or whatever is the right term to identify people from Israel. They have an extra special blessing and promises from God that whatever good they set in their hearts to do shall prosper. I don't say it with jealousy or in a mean way, but the rest of us are on a lower bracket.

In my opinion, i got a good accent even though i feel that i sound like my native language, but my father told me that my voice change but i didn't feel that my accent has changed a lot. I think that your accent change is because we are using not the same movements of tonge. And that's all but if you hear someone that's trying to imitate the american accent that would be pretty fake. so my conclusion a real accent is when you pronounce well words.

I've just realised that my regular voice has a lower pitch and I don't like it, but I do that when speaking English. I think I need to improve my native language voice first. Maybe that's because of my personality, I'm shy.

I feel the same way! It feels like a lower tone is easier to "conceal" or harder for others to notice. Being shy, this is something that I lean towards a lot! But lately I've been trying to practice by using two instances of a voice chat program (Discord) and listening myself during normal day-to-day stuff. I feel like it's helping me, and I hope you also find something that helps you. Good luck!

Mrs Hadar. I recognized this issue for years and I figured it out myself a week ago before watching this video. ( wish I watch this earlier). The idea hit me when I was imitating some speeches in movies while in the bathroom. The echo is created in there works the same as your technique saying " mmmm". Such a huge improvement in my voice :)

I think that you have to change your voice. There is stuff happening like lifting the soft palet etc wich is also part of making an English native accent
