In this architecture student portfolio flip-through video I show you the portfolio that I put together for my application to study undergraduate architecture at the University of Cambridge. Please be advised your architecture portfolio is quite personal and everyone's will (and should) be completely different. Feel free to ask me questions about my work in the comments; obviously please do not to try to copy any of it - they will know if you do!
Since I do not have any Fine Art qualifications from secondary school, this is all work I produced in my own time. Of course, the portfolio only forms part of the whole application and how big of a role it plays in whether you get accepted varies from person to person. I hope this video is helpful to give you an idea of what an accepted Cambridge architecture portfolio could look like.
If you are interested in the rest of my application then make sure you subscribe! I inted to post two more videos - about my personal statement (and UCAS application) as well as about my experience at interview - over the next few weeks.

I just found out i got in!! Your advice was so helpful, and from my experience one simple piece of advice is by far the most important. The admissions people are not looking for a particular type of work (i.e. fine art, life drawing, etc.) if that is not what youre passionate about. From my observation the absolute most important thing is to present something that you can talk about with genuine interest, passion and enthusiasm at the interview. My work was all from 3d design a level, obviously no fine art whatsoever, and i couldve spent my own time getting together fine art (which i suspect they do generally prefer), but i would never have been passionate about it and thus it would not have done me well. Tldr: present something that you passionately believe represents YOU.

Amazing video !!! Absolutely loved your portfolio and congratulations on getting into Cambridge !! Do you think having bad GCSEs will impact the chance of getting into Cambridge for architecture even if the Alevel grades are very good and portfolio is perfect :)
@CallumHenderson
@CallumHenderson 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you!! Honestly that’s one of those things that is almost impossible for me to comment on. Cambridge obviously care a lot about grades - it’s one of the things they can use to try and determine your academic potential. That being said if you have already done your GCSEs and received lower grades than you would have liked then there’s nothing you can do about it now really so I’d just focus on achieving as highly as possible in everything from this point onwards. I think it’d be wrong to say any one particular thing will either get you in or stop you from getting in and I personally believe that every little thing will have different weighting in everyone’s own application, especially to a subject like architecture where it’s fundamentally a design-based degree. I am by no means an official point of contact for the university however; if you are majorly concerned you could always email your college of choice’s admissions office and ask for their advice.

The university website will have guidance on which subjects to study but normally architecture is fairly lenient - I’ve never heard of physics being required anywhere but requiring maths or art isn’t uncommon. That being said I didn’t take art and most people in my year didn’t take maths! Have a look at your college’s and the university’s websites but do pick subjects you’re interested in!

It is definitely predominantly an art-form and my degree is very much an education in design. Of course we need maths to know our buildings won’t fall down and there’s also a certain element of logical thinking behind drawings and understanding spaces. To me, architecture is most fundamentally about artistic expression.

It also DEPENDS on the school AND degree. Like how Bartlett have a master of engineering in BOTH architecture and engineering. It accredited by BOTH architecture and engineering governing bodies. Although it called a master degree it considered a UNDERGRAD degree. Since it is the FIRST degree before any other degree ( as in entry degree). And four years rather than one or two years.

The cambridge spec says they require a portfolio subject and a good GCSE level of maths. I do not think physics and literature matters too much but they do want you to have some historical knowledge on architecture. I currently do maths, physics and 3D-design at a-level and i believe that as long as you can present a portfolio and demonstrate a good understanding of architecture, you should be fine.

I spent a good month working on my portfolio non-stop every day since I was on a gap year and my education really depended on it! I certainly spent a lot of time drawing and being creative throughout my childhood anyway and I assume if you are interested in architecture you must have same vague creative interests in a similar manner too? It's good that you see it as techniques to develop - drawing is definitely a skill you can practice and improve like any other. Honestly the way to develop is exactly that - spend lots of time practising. I advise you practice specific skills at a time, eg learn to draw in perspective and spend a lot of time until you're happy then move on, or what I did was force myself to carry a sketchbook around and draw things from life as much as possible, for example.

It really depends on the university so you should check their admissions pages to be sure. Generally it is strongly advised you do. Hello, i am applying to UCl London for architecture. What is the ratio of writing to images in my art portfolio you recommend? I don't take DT for my Alevel but i do Fine Art, would you say this is a disadvantage for applying? Thanks
@CallumHenderson
@CallumHenderson 3 жыл бұрын
Well you can see the bits of writing I had in my digital portfolio - this was mostly as I didn't have an interview for the ones I submitted digitally so wanted to voice some thoughts. For my physical A1 portfolio, I maybe had a few notes here and there but obviously it is a portfolio of artwork so I personally thought the images were a lot more important. After all, you can always say things out-loud that you might otherwise write down whilst you are in the actual interview. As far as A-Levels are concerned, I took neither DT nor Fine Art and was still successful. I think that Fine Art would probably be more helpful to the work you would be doing at university, especially since UCL is known for being a very arty/design-focussed school. All of the necessary design/technical skills required to be an architect are usually taught as part of the degree so I wouldn't be concerned about doing DT from that point of view. Hope that helps!

@CallumHenderson
@CallumHenderson 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, I wonder if you are confused between university and professional portfolios? When applying to university (to architecture school) in the UK none of us have any experience in architecture really so the portfolio is expected to be entirely artwork. When we graduate and work professionally, the portfolio we would bring to a job interview is then professional work, ie architecture projects, concepts, plans etc etc as you say. What should you do? You should research what kind of portfolio you need for whatever you are applying to. I wanted to get into Cambridge so I looked for their guidance on what kind of work to show in my portfolio before I submitted it. For a job or work experience, I would certainly adapt this to include very different work.

very interesting and helpful. What did you do in A-level and what grades you have got? Thanks Congratulations :)
@CallumHenderson
@CallumHenderson 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you!:) I studied maths, physics, further maths and music at A-Level and my grades were A*A*AA respectively. I believe the typical offer for architecture may be lower than this, however, and I received an unconditional offer as I already had my A-Level grades at the time I applied.

@@abrodolphlincoler6673 it certainly added an extra layer of complexity to the process however I did a lot of drawing as a child. If I were applying again and knew I was applying for architecture at the start of Lower Sixth I probably would have thought twice about my subjects thought!

I'm really torn between engineering and architecture. I see you too took double maths for A level, so what was the deciding factor for you?

Maybe you could try Civil Engineering.
@CallumHenderson
@CallumHenderson 3 жыл бұрын
Against popular belief, I actually think they are quite different subjects. The deciding factor was really having the emphasis on creativity. In architecture, everything you do is geared around design and creativity. In engineering, you might use some creative thinking once in a while but ultimately it’s much more technically-focussed and maths-reliant.

Did you try Bartlett master of engineering. Which combined architecture and engineering. It accredited by BOTH architecture and engineering governing bodies. Although this is question is from three years ago.

I started around the beginning of September and continued working on it up until interviews in early December. A lot of this time was also spent actually producing the work though since I didn’t have loads of art work to hand before then.

Both. Although when applying for college the portfolio is usually just artwork whereas when applying for jobs it’s obviously then expected to be actually architectural projects.
