Texas has passed some of the most restrictive anti-abortion laws in the U.S. By September, only six abortion clinics are expected to remain in a state that has 70,000 abortions a year. Fault Lines travels to Texas to find out what’s behind the legislation and how it is affecting women’s lives.
In this episode we meet a 23-year old woman named Melissa who self-induces an abortion because she lives in an area of Texas that no longer has any abortion clinics. She says it’s a financial burden to travel 300 miles round trip to reach the closest abortion clinic. Instead, Melissa traveled 30 minutes to Mexico where she bought a medication called Misoprostal. It’s normally used to treat ulcers, but she took it to end her pregnancy.
Fault Lines re-traces Melissa’s steps traveling to Mexico to find out how a woman in her position would acquire Misoprostal without a prescription, examines what options are available to undocumented women who are unable to cross the border and live in areas with no abortion clinics, and speaks with advocates on both side of the debate over access to abortions in Texas.

Crazybird Ninja abortions are, by definition, unsafe. That’s the point. Pro choice arguments rely on ignoring the life of the baby. I used to be pro choice, so I understand your thought process, but it just isn’t logical. Can you at least admit that if a fetus is a human being, it should not be legal for a doctor to kill it?

We are going to have to insure father's will be held accountable also or Medicaid expansion is going to go through the roof. Women and girls know about birth control and that adoption is an option. I can’t think of a more expensive “birth control” which is why abortion isn’t used for birth control. The “abortion isn’t birth control” is just a convenient tag line flippantly pushed by anti-choice as an insult to those that find themselves dealing with an unplanned, unwanted pregnancy. The majority of women seeking an abortion were using birth control during the month they conceived. There is no perfect birth control or perfect woman.

@@eveharris30 hmm I think you might want to read the bible before making such idiotic comments; let me say I do not need the bible religion is for the weak of mind, but at least they seek knowledge. Ok so sacrifice is usually used as a metaphor. Jesus said you who have not sinned may throw the first stone. Killing of the first born was God showing his justice, it was a punishment. War really, I can't think of many wars in the bible but David gave himself as a sacrifice in the expectation that his God would save him and his people (i don't know if God spoke to him or it was a Faith move), instead of allot of people dying it resorted to one person dying; if you know of any other wars let me know and I'll read it and explain, however war was an inevitability, no "God" would tell you to remain defenseless. I think God gave his people to slavery as punishment, the old test glorifies the release from slavery, with the symbolism of parting waters (an impossible act). To not Murder, is one of the commandments given to all not just the isrealites, again God does this as punishment. It might be said that God condones punishment; if their are not punishments how with you in force the law. So looking at all these things, that were done or "condoned" as a punishment; what did the fetus do to deserve a punishment, would be the fundalmental thing to tell a theist before impling they are hypocrites. Knowing facts without understanding them and making judgement is foolish; it is like asking did you kill this person and not asking the follow up question why? If any jew, christian would like to correct me if I am wrong go ahead.

I'm pro-abortion but women aren't agency-less children, you blaming men like this infantilizes women. My ex insisted we don't use condoms, insisted I come inside her, insisted that she knew her cycle so well that there was no chance of her getting pregnant. She got pregnant. I said I would support her no matter what she did. She waited until the absolute last point before she eventually go an abortion, the fifth abortion of her life. She basically was using abortion as birth control. It was pretty devastating seeing that life gone from her after she did it. Both of us were reallly fucked up for a whole year after that. I never told her this cause I didn't want to add to her burden, but when it was all said and done I wish that she had followed through and had that baby. I'm pro-abortion, but I think the issue is complicated and not ethically meaningless, especially as the pregnancy progresses. Infantilizing women doesn't help. Blaming men doesn't help. Abortion is a problem because of the choices women make just as much as the choices men make. It takes two. Pretending that late-trimester abortions are simply a matter of bodily autonomy doesn't solve the issue of those type of abortions also being one and the same as killing a viable baby that can feel pain and has a very developed brain and nervous system.

So please pro choice find a different explanation...no matter how you look at it...the life is conceived and a woman will make a conscious choice to end the life of her child for her own personal reasons. In America there are 36 couples waiting for every one adoptable child. No more excuses. BTW.. killing a human out of "inconvenience" is never justified. According to Guttmacher & PEW, 99.3% of abortions are performed for convenience..you don't have a right to kill someone because they inconvenience you. Educate yourself

But women have been having them for centuries, since the beginning of time. They were actually sanctioned by the Catholic church in the 1800's. In a perfect world, no one would need or want one. However, we cant force people to have children they dont want or cant afford. Forced government births wouldn't work anyway as women who are desperate will go to great lengths to end an unwanted pregnancy. Yet that exact same woman when the time is right, will give her life to have a child. If only there was a birth control pill for men. If only we held men equally responsible? From what I've read, Millennials are having fewer children than generations before them and abortions are actually at historically low levels.

How come people do not mind their damn business . These states that are banning abortion aren’t making things better , it will lead to unsafe abortions . I also absolutely love how a lot of the women whom are pro life are already well established, have money , a decent house and most likely have a man . There are so many people in poverty that don’t want to raise a child in that poverty too , they most likely won’t even see that child grow up . They won’t have enough money to get what the baby needs. I love how women say oh so when the baby is out your just going to kill your baby , well it’s too late then isn’t it . Misoprostal has been used by Planned parenthood for the same purpose as shown in this video and people choose this method even under medical attention. It makes it seem on this video that women don’t have a choice. There is always a choice. There have always been choices,is just at what point should you make that choice? There are contraceptives available and the responsibility of the 2 adults making that choice to be sexually active., Why wait to be “responsible” after you’ve found out that you are pregnant? Why not be “responsible” before getting pregnant? If you have kids and you know or think that you can’t take care of another why not be responsible and choose not to have sex or use contraceptives correctly? Why is this the only choice? Why is this being seen as a civil right matter for the women but not for the baby? Why are men not taking responsibility for their action? If Melissa is poor and wants to do things right why did she make the choice to be sexually active and not protect herself? If she wants to do things right when she’s ready to have a family why didn’t she speak with her partner and make a conscious choice to have him wear a condom (which are readily available even in bathroom vending machines)correctly ? Why did she have to wait to be pregnant to make the”right choice”? Just thoughts?

I'm seriously supposed to feel sorry for women that are having a hard time killing the baby they WILLINGLY created? No, I'm sorry, I don't. If someone was raped, different story, but I have no sympathy for these people that lay down with someone, let them ejaculate in them, and then say they have no choice but to kill the baby they could have prevented in the first place. It's really disturbing. And this is what she'd have to go through with a legal abortion too. Many (probably almost half) of abortions are done using the same pills she took. Ones at 7 weeks especially. So her suffering isn't because of the laws, it's because she's intentionally having a miscarriage. Miscarriages are horrifically painful, that's what she signed up for, I have no sympathy for that. I had a miscarriage, and I didn't want one. It was horrible. I don't feel bad for anyone that would do that to themselves and their baby *on purpose* after laying down and creating that baby *intentionally.* You can't tell me a pregnancy was accidental when you did NOTHING to try to prevent it. This whole thing is so messed up and you guys are so brainwashed it gives me a headache to think about it.

@@Hyonyx That's not what I'm talking about though. I understand people that want an abortion after a rape or after contraceptive failure a LOT more than I understand other abortions. But you know those two situations are extremely rare compared to people that just do it because they didn't use any contraceptive or were using it irresponsibly (as in, not every time, which to me is the same as not using it at all.) I still think that *technically* all abortions are wrong, but I can at least understand why someone would want to do it if they tried like hell to prevent it and it still didn't work. But that's VERY rare. If used correctly most contraceptive methods are near 100% efficacy. Even pulling out is very very effective if the dude knows how to do it right and doesn't screw it up, getting pregnant from the pre-semen fluid (didn't want to use the colloquial term, it's gross) is nearly impossible. So even the free, zero effort method has nearly perfect efficacy. It has 84% efficacy INCLUDING people that do it wrong and don't pull out quick enough. So it's much higher if done right every time (and there are PLENTY of men that can do it right every time.) I used that method and only that method for literally a decade (with the same ex boyfriend) and never got pregnant, and as soon as me and my fiance now decided we wanted a baby and stopped using that method (because we used it together too), I got pregnant pretty quickly. It works, it really does. So I have a VERY hard time seeing what the hell the excuse is for not using ANY contraceptive method whatsoever. And that's where the vast majority of abortions come from. And in my personal life I have seen this to be true. EVERY SINGLE woman I know (which is a lot) that's had an abortion (or 5, I literally know a person that had FIVE), it was because they did absolutely nothing to try to prevent pregnancy. Those are the people I have zero sympathy for. I've known an insane amount of prostitutes (I lived in a horrible area) that ALL managed to prevent pregnancy even though they had sex with several different people up to 10+ times in a day and somehow managed not to get pregnant. It's totally doable. It's hard for me to have sympathy for someone that just lets someone ejaculate in them, or several people, and then complains that they didn't want to be pregnant and now they need to kill the innocent baby they willfully, knowingly created. No one is going to get my sympathy or understanding for doing that. That's crap.

Can someone explain to me why people say that pro-life is all about controlling women's bodies? I am pro-choice, in favour of publicly funded health care, ready and widespread access to abortion (before 3rd trimester except in medical emergencies), pro maternity leave..... but why attribute the pro-life cause to horrible motives when in pro-lifers own words they say they believe abortion is killing a baby? Why does it HAVE to be about controlling women's bodies and not just about a scientifically inaccurate view of when a fetus becomes an actual baby? We are hard wired as humans to protect babies. I think pro-lifers are wrong, but I believe what they say about their motives. I dont think it's about controlling women's bodies for them.

Most of the women say that if this happens again or it has happened to them more than once meaning they've made the decision to terminate life more than once and that they would do it again and they would travel further distance if they needed to have another abortion is not fixing the issue of women becoming more responsible of their own health and their lives. Thou shalt not kill murder is murder whether it's inside the womb or outside of the womb whether it's a one month old baby that's been born outside of the womb or woman who is one month pregnant when life conception has already begun that's life inside of you that's what makes you pregnant.

Thank You for sharing. God is pro-life. God is love. God is a forgiving God. Abortion is not an unforgivable sin. I am a Christian. I personally believe abortion is legalized pre-meditated murder. God never said not to abort babies. He said thou shall not murder. Abortion is legalized pre-meditated murder. Abortion is not self-care or birth control, it is murder. God is the author and giver of life. God is only One that should be able to decide when life ends. You have to realize these clinics make money killing babies. Abortion is an expensive form of “birth control” that keeps their doors (abortion clinics) open. But I find it very hypocritical when someone who is against animal cruelty yet promotes pro-choice at the same time.

Hospital privileges for a procedure means the hospital has reviewed the training and malpractice history of a doctor and will allow the doctor to perform the procedure in the hospital. The review is performed by a credentialing committee of other doctors on staff at the hospital. If the hospital allows somebody who really isn't qualified (but tries to advertise to you that they are) the hospital will be potentially liable in a lawsuit if complications occur. Consequently BEWARE of any doctor who wants to do an abortion, but doesn't have hospital privileges to do the same procedure in the hospital setting. So hospital privileges are an important assurance of safety. To infer otherwise is to NOT care About a woman’s health and safety. This video is very misleading.

Killing babies is wrong! No baby should have to face death without them willing to die. if you see how the baby is desperately fighting for his/her life when the doctor is slowly tearing it apart inside the womb you will understand that this baby doesn't want to be killed. I stand people who say "No woman should have to give birth to a child she doesn't want" Then we should allow women to kill their newborns as well if they change their mind and decide that motherhood is not for them! NO BABY SHOULD BE FORCED TO DIE BECAUSE A WOMAN THINKS HE/SHE IS AN INCONVENIENCE! If you cannot raise this baby give it for adoption don't kill it! Stop trying to victimizing women instead of teaching them about healthier alternatives! MURDER IS NOT THE ANSWER TO A PROBLEM! And before people start using the RAPE argument... KILLING THE BABY WON"T MAKE THE RAPE GO AWAY! BUT ALLOWING THAT INNOCENT CHILD TO LEAVE WILL GIVE THE WOMAN RELIEF FROM THE HORRIBLE THING THAT HAPPENED TO HER SHE WILL HAVE THE OF LIFE TO A HUMAN BEING THAT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE ACTIONS OF HIS/HER BIOLOGICAL FATHER! ADOPTION IS A BETTER SOLUTION THAN MURDER!
