Access Virus TI2 Setup in Ableton Live

Detailed instructions for setting up a new Access Virus TI2 synthesizer as an Instrument Rack to route MIDI and Audio properly in Ableton Live8. Accurate for Live9 also. Workflow tips for how to save the device for future use.

This is what determines which MIDI controllers would map to the Virus input channels. So All Channels will work with all controllers but when you start wanting to only play certain parts with one controller/channel and use other controllers for other parts then you would set them as the MIDI source. I'm happy to see so many people benefiting from this tutorial. I'm working on more Ableton tutorials that will be released later this year on a new Ableton focused training website. :)

OK thanks! That really clears stuff up. Yeah loved this tutorial. I had about the same setup but you had all kinds of neat little tweaks which'll make it easier to use (like scaling). I actually just saved mine in the 'new' template of Ableton, since I would be using it every track anyway. Maybe something you could benefit from :)

Two quick questions. I can see that my second audio channel is receiving audio routed from the usb 2 l+r, but is there a way to monitor this sound before recording it? I can tell its coming through but I can't hear it. Secondly, I have one midi keyboard; why are you changing all channels to channel one two or three? When I do this I get no midi input. I understand the concept of routing the midi channel to the 1st, 2nd, 3rd 4th etc channel to the virus, but using it past all channels or channel one I don't get. I'm assuming its because my keyboard is on that channel.

Instead of creating separate midi audio tracks you could of just inserted a external instrument which would have simplified the set up and then to group the tracks you could of just highlighted them all either control or shift and then cntrl G to group them

Hi DrS. Excellent video. Very informative. However, I run a Macbook Pro. Running Ableton Live Lite to try it out. I've followed your instructions but there is no Access Virus Ti in the PLUGINS section. I've setup Access as my INPUT and OUTPUT device. I closed AB Live and restarted. nothing. I know that to get it in Logic I had to copy files. Is there anything I should be copying, setting up, installing etc. before I fire up the Access? Hope you can help. Thanks. Ed

Small question, coming back to this again. What annoys me the most is when I want to solo a channel, I have to solo the audio AS WELL as the MIDI channel. Is there a quick way to mute just one, and not having the hastle of a two clicks all the time?

Thanks so much for making this. I was wondering, what does the Ch 1. - Ch. 4 do at the IN section of a channel (so not 1-4 Virus TI)? I always keep em on All Channels, does it make a difference?

Hi very useful tutorial ! Can I ask you a question? I have a Virus TI Snow and I have problems in Ableton Live 9 because of sharing the same USB port like you say. I connect the Virus directly to the Mac and in the other USB port I connect a self-powered USB Hub. I really can't fix this problem...It's been weeks now and I'm thinking of selling it because of this issue....May you please give me some tips? TNX!

Always connect it directly to the laptop, usually one of the USB ports is a dedicated port and one port is part of an internal hub. Use trial and error to find the right port and then mark it so you always plug the Virus in there. That advice has worked for many Virus owners that I know.

DrStrangeLube thank you for the quick answer. I actually have two ports in my Mac Book Pro. I've tried both but the problem is still there. Is there any possibility to set the internal hub in any way? I really don't understand why my Mac tells me that I'm sharing a port when the Virus is connected directly without any Hub. (I've contacted even the Access support but they don't give me any solution)

I'm sure you've already figured this out by now - but that's not how the Virus Classic was designed. It's not designed that way. Best you can do is trigger it via regular MIDI (or trade it up for a Virus TI. Right now Access has a deal running that will give you $250 credit if you trade up!). Good luck!

Hi, I set up my Virus TI2 with Live 9 exactly like you've shown. But when I switch the midi tracks (record enabled) I always have to select the corresponding part on Virus in order to hear it. What am I doing wrong? Example: In Live I choose the track for Virus channel 2, the selected part on the Virus is 1 so I don't hear anything. When I select part 2 on the Virus I can play midi channel 2. When I select part 3 on the Virus no sound.

Yes you can add more midi tracks to control up to 16 parts at once with the Virus TI. I just setup 4 in this tutorial as a starting point.

I think ableton Live 9 is a bit different. I can't drag the Group into folders to save it. and I have to keep it all on ch.1 :(

Thanks for the video. I've set my Virus/Abelton up as you suggested here, but as my midi keyboard is transmitting on ch 1 I can only play midi for the ch 1 in the Virus TI. How do I change to midi ch 2 or 3 or 4 etc... in this setup without altering the output midi ch of my keyboard?

In this case if you can only send out midi channel , then set all of the midi tracks input to your controller and Midi channel to Any or 1 and then just arm whatever track you want to use and your controller will work on that track.

Or add an External Instrument on a separate track and control the Virus for the channels other than the first one... it would be nice to have a midi channelizer in Max4Live format but I've not found one yet

That's odd. Maybe it is a live mode of the TI synth to only play the active part.

Hey man, great tut, but I'm having a problem. I've followed your settings to the letter, but when it gets to the audio tracks 2 and 3, the drop down menu does not give me the option for 2-Virus and 3-Virus. My only options are 3/4 - Virus and 5/6 - Virus. Also, when I try to play a sound, all 4 midi tracks play at the same time. I must be missing something obvious.

+alienanxiety So I've played with the setup myself and left it to be 3/4 & 5/6 (as this is stereo signal). The 2 & 3 in his video are mono signals. It's working fine with the 3/4 & 5/6 in my Ableton ;) Good luck.

I won't come because the chips are EOL . They need to completely rewrite the code or emulate it . Then it won't sound the same. Eventide went through the same thing with H8000 -> H9000

"drag your virus ti from your library". pretty much the key component in this entire tutorial, and you skip over it in 0.5 secs :) unfortunately i dont see the virus ti in my library. dont know why?

First you have to drag your group TI track into your User folder in your Live Library. Do this once you are done setting everything up, drag it into your PLACES/User Library area and it will prompt you to name it, etc. Then it's available to drag out. Make sense?

Nope this is a slight annoyance. Remember you can mute parts in the Virus VST UI with one click, but no Solo. :)
