You're doing the wrong way. At 1:50 you're lifting the large panel up, the panel with the clips. This cracks the clips. You should lift the small side to detach from the clips. On my first HDD I only broke 1 clip this way.

Great tutorial but i'd urge anyone attempting this not to use a knife of any kind! Get a set of cheap car trim removal tools or a mobile phone case opener tool both of which are made of hard plastic and are much safer to use and you also won't damage the case if you want to reuse it. Remember, these enclosures are designed not to be opened so you're going to need a bit of brute force. Using some trim removal tools i found it easier to prise open where there is a gap inside towards each end of the flat cover. I only broke 1 clip so that was pretty good going i think. I opened up 2 x 8TB enclosures and found some very nice Seagate Barracuda Computes in mine. They cost me £105 each in Amazon's sale. The price of these naked drives was £179 so i save a load of money shucking them! Just take your time and be careful. If you don't break the clips you can of course reuse these enclosures with other drives so it's a great way of saving money!

Only CMR drives are good ones, its an old technology method how drives write data on them. SMR is built to cheat consumers, since they up the volume by too much from less. Lets say 2tb increased in size up to 8tp without loss of cost to manufacture, its kind of like old compression method in windows xp was, but you have true 8tb, the only problem, its good only for Read, and will die on many Writes. So if you want good drive take CMR it will last for long time, while SMR is good as SD Card, if you Write data to it few times and then use it for Read only its good (Backup) if you want to use it for video editing or constantly erasing and rewriting data, for NAS etc, its no go.

NEVER use a metal screwdriver to pry open a plastic case. Spend a few $ & buy a non-metal/anti-magnetic case spudger-pry tool. All the 'usual suspects' sell them. btw, if you warm up the housing with a hair dryer on low heat for a few minutes from 12" away the case is much easier to shuck and won't be damaged. Biggest issue with the BPH series is ventilation. Placing the drive flat improves air flow and is better for the HDD. Good question - the Seagate basically acts as a USB hub where you can connect more USB devices to the computer, but ultimately you're connecting to just one computer. If you shuck it, you do lose the hub functionality but in my case, i place the hard disk in a QNAP NAS which let's me access that drive from multiple computers.

@@accessrandom Weird related question - Is it possible to reuse the SATA board internally (such as mounted to an optical bay, with the proper adjustments) using a SATA cable and the power connector? I've seen online versions of front panel optical/floppy bay USB hubs for sale, but I thought I'd ask since I already own this drive.

Жаль, конечно, что все крепления поломались, но всё равно спасибо.

Less than ideal USB connector on device rear. Two brand new hubs with intermittent USB connection. Despite the cable inserted, theirs or my own, the drive connects/disconnects unless the cable is very specifically held in position. Forget all that, this drive is coming out and going into a Nexstar 3.1 enclosure. Poor workmanship

people really need a video for removing the disk? 😆😆

You can't win them all... larger Western Digitals are the way to go.

I disliked because you did not show us whether the drive has a SATA connector or not, defeating the purpose of this vid. WD drives don't.

he said in the video they are sata

@@UnitAlir i dont understand your problem, he says in the video that it is sata, and i can tell you from experience that it is sata. you would be hard pressed to find a drive that isn't sata in an external enclosure
@UnitAlir5 жыл бұрын
@@justinmason100 A lot of external drives are NOT sata. Their USB controllers are soldered on and built in.

@@UnitAlir i have literally never seen that on a drive, and i've shucked 10 of them so far, i wasn't aware that was common
