Accident During Demolition, It Caught Fire..

Accidents like this can happen, unfortunately it isn't the first and it wont be the last. Structural retrofits like this can take a long time to complete, but give the building the structural integrity it needs to stand for decades to come. PSL, LVL, LSL structural material will be used to construct this 3-story home into someone's dream home.

Before saying anything about how I should have triple checked every which way before I cut that open.. Understand that looking back, I should have done it differently. It could have been marked out by electrician as well, I'll take fault and proudly show everyone here on KZbin to show you that mistakes happen. Remember the kitchen I built at 9' instead of 11'? Or the times I've cut expensive beams incorrectly? It happens!

Yeah those are a nice pry tool. A cheater bar is good to have handy with these. They are a tad short for deck boards with spiral nails thought. An extra foot and a half makes all the difference.

@5:40 when you lose your hearing, it's going to be too late. It'll take a while, so you won't worry about it, bu then there comes a time when it's too late. I wish I could got back in time and kick my stupid ass for not wearing hearing protection. I love your content, just looking out for your crew and you.

I need to get better about it.. Been working in my shop and have hearing protection depending on what I'm doing. I can't hear a damn thing with earplugs in, and on a 3-story home with a bunch of moving parts, I want to be able to hear everyone.

At this point, it's been a common question, I have to say.. probably not! Land isn't buyable here, this area they don't issue new permits for homes. You have to use existing. So 1.5M purchase price, demolition + rebuild, I'd imagine it would be tough to keep it under the cost of a renovation like this.

The operative reason is the permitting. In so many of these communities, which have gotten tired of people buying up properties and demolishing them for someone to come build their mini mansion, they’ve made new building impossible unless there is a catastrophic loss due to something like fire etc. The other reason in a lot of places is having to meet new setback and total buildable area laws. If you rebuild you can use the rules as they existed, not as they are today. You might have a house built up to two feet of the lot lines but the new law says you have to have a 10 foot setback. Well, you just gave up lots of building that you can’t replace. Finally, if you rebuild you have to build to the latest building codes, where if you do a remodel you might only have to bring the remodeled area up to code. That can save you thousands of dollars. So yeah, a remodel is often the only way. I saw one “remodel” on KZbin where they saved one wall of the garage and the slab. That’s it. But it was enough that they didn’t have to conform to the new setback, buildable area, and square feet rules. If they hadn’t, they would only have been able to build about 75% of the house back! That’s hundreds of thousands of dollars in space saved.
