Regarding the old houses, SOME people I know who live in what might be called the "slum," but they're actually wealthy af. The reason they stay in their ancestral homes is because of the deep sentimental value attached to them. It's particularly difficult for the elderly to leave their old homes.

The Spanish didnt much after moving the Capital to Manila, It was the American period that revitalized Cebu, Cebu Harbour was designed and modernized by Americans, Fuente Circle - formerly Jones Avenue , The City Capitol was constructed , The Mango Avenue ( Now a Party and Hooker district ). Religion is Catholic but Architecture was more American, only few Old Buildings are left standing as Japanese in WW2 pulverized Cebu with bombs

Natalie, the Dress Code for visiting the House of God should be similar to the Dress Code in visiting the house/office of the President or Prime Minister of a country. Unless you opine that your Chief Executive deserves more respect or modest attire. In some churches in the Philippines, there are lady monitors/volunteers -- who provide shawls and wrap-around skirts to tourists who wish to step inside the Parish Church. Upon leaving the church, the shawl and/or skirt is returned -- at no charge.

I’m Filipino and I love your honesty. Natalie needs coconut water….no ice, just chilled. It’s natural Gatorade…… back in the war it’s been used as IV….it’s that good. Food poisoning is no fun. Feel better, Natalie. Just avoid the shellfish…. I was laughing at the dog shit…😂 Welcome to the Philippines! Yes, you really have to be cautious. The puddles with filthy water….etc. I was laughing at you noticing this guy checking out Natalie’s 4$$. Filipinos are very friendly and you’re right, it’s not a good idea to venture the slum area at night when some of the residents are drunk. You just don’t know what they’ll do.

English and Tagalog are our lingua franca. But in government records, we opt for English. Cebuano is a Visayan language. Mostly spoken in Cebu, Dumaguete and in some parts of Mindanao. Tagalog is the basis of Filipino language with dialects in Quezon, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Cavite, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Bataan, etc.

Slums….maybe to people from 1st world countries but it looks like a pretty normal neighborhood or whatever you want to call it. I am an American and live in Cebu City. I lived in a place that is pretty similar in a small apartment. I’m not saying saying those kids were not trying to pick pocket you but some kids will grab at you like your hand so they can greet you. They will put the back of your hand to their forehead. I felt safe no matter what time of the day I was out and about. Definitely felt a lot safer than most big cities in the US.

The great explorer NEVER PRONOUNCED his name that way. He was Portuguese and his name -- as shown by his signature -- was Fernão de Magalhães -- and in Spain, he used (and was called) Fernando de Magallanes. Many years after his death, English historians translated his name to Ferdinand Magellan. The guy probably turns in his grave, every time he hears his name mispronounced. Like you, when Americans read and pronounce "Saludares." Di ba?

16:00 When you go to a certain establishment, or a certain event, like a Prom Ball or whatever, there is a certain dress code, and way to dress. You dont go to a Gala event with your gym clothes. Same, if you enter the House of God, theres a way to dress. If we respect our fellow humans with the way we dress for certain events, why dont we honor God? Just some thoughts about the Church Topic. Im Catholic too btw

So sad that mostly filipinos here in the comment section don't seem to defend or correct the woman in this video about the "Dress Code". Thailand also have that "Dress Code" when you want to enter their temples. No one forced you to go to the church on the first place.
@mymaria888
@mymaria888 4 ай бұрын
@@Tralaw97-- you're correct. The Thai's also require modest dress code- covered shoulders, bellies and above the knees- when entering places of worship. Regarding other Filipinos correcting Natalie, others did as well. I'm sure she got the message. No need to beat the dead horse. With the exception of one or two things, I think they did a great job showing the Philippines.

@@EatsmylifePh it's not sugar coating, having a home with ugly exterior doesn't mean you are poor. To us poor are those who have no home. Mostly Filipinos don't have time to make their homes beautiful as long as you have a neat and clean interior you are basically well off, a home that can host visitors is considered well off too, a family that eats 3 times a day is considered well off too, those who can afford to pay bills especially taxes to contribute to society are well off too, those who have water in their faucet, electricity and whatnot are well off, people that have leisure time are considered well too. People that begs money on the street are considered poor, people that look for food in the trash are considered poor, people that can't even afford food for a day are considered poor.

It really hurts my heart when I hear people call those places slums, squatters, ghettos or hood. It sounds so derogatory. I know the words used are descriptive and valid. But in my mind, impoverished community or marginalized community describes their situation not is people. It also sounds hopeful, in that, given assistance, education and time, the people in said communities can live fruitful lives. Some would call me hopeless romantic or worse. I would probably agree. 😅

14:43 "Filipino" is the standardized version of "Tagalog" and is the national language of the country, the difference is simply standardizing certain words that everybody around the country would understand. example: word: Blue Tagalog: "bughaw" Filipino: "asul" only the tagalogs (people from luzon) use the word "bughaw", and Filipino is established to generalize the word to "asul" as the Spansih colonization made the word more known to the entire country

That area isn't the slums. If you knew about the war that destroyed that city, it has taken decades to rebuild. The Philippines is one of the poorest countries, so funding to repair the damage is at a very slow pace. Buildings are still crooked, the roads and sidewalks clearly show bomb damage. I know if they had the funding, they would repair their homes with quality materials.

He's not wrong. The "J" sound in Magellan is a U.S. pronunciation.

@@nocheckinbags-- it's not that they're not interested in talking to you. They're afraid if they talk to you or even acknowledge your presence, you will either ask them questions or start talking to them and then, they'll be shamed for not knowing enough English words. Many Filipinos know enough English to get by. They know more English than you do Filipino or Tagalog. But, they're fearful of being embarrassed for having a strong accent or not knowing enough English to converse. You'll hear them say, "Nose bleed." Meaning, they're using their brain so forcefully - to speak English- they're causing themselves nose bleed. 😂

It is not the oldest city and not the first capital of the Philippines. When the Spaniards set foot in the Cebu there is no Philippines yet.

Cebu has never been the first Capital. If ever there was a center of operations by the Spanish it was Iloilo and then Manila. Cebuanos you have to stop claiming things that are not yours. It is just bad rep, like calling yourself queen city of the south when you are not, or saying you are a capital when you are not. When the Spanish came back with Legazpi at the healm Cebu was not turned into its base of operations for the conquest. What kind of capital is that? You guys also stole the idea that Linagpang is Cebuano, when historians clearly show it is western Visayas. Stop re-writing history.
