This is not an isolated incident. This company has been doing this for a year now, and they actively delete reviews on Amazon warning about this. At the same time they claim that this only affected "the first shipment" - and they've been saying this for 12 months. So at this point it's likely intentional.

With Walmart recently selling the MacBook Air M1 for $699 this is a hard sell with all the hoops you need to jump through. Outside of Apples business practices and personal feelings the MacBook is a great deal for those home PC needs.

The company absolutely just rebranded. I found this review trying to find anything out about the AOC MX16 which is in fact this laptop. The only other videos I could find regarding it were weird obvious fake youtube accounts made in the last 2 or 3 months all narrated by a computer voice. I appreciate you checking and confirming my suspicions that the laptop was a scam and likely loaded with malware.

not sure if MSRP matters if the price the manufacturer says for that is way too high for instance. I'd compare it to other things with similar specs (and especially if that MSRP is not typically the price but its more in that realm of the sale price ... like its "always on sale" ... i think that COMBINED with devices with similar specs should be a reasonable target for comparing it to other things

Definitely makes me a little nervous. I've been following some of these lower cost options from ace magician and mini forum. In fact I was really considering one of their mini PCs that had like a sixth gen ryzen, but ultimately got an Xbox studio instead.

I loved this review. Really good and the malware issue hasn’t put me off actually. I’m hoping that they’ve sorted that 2 months later and I’ve found one on Amazon for £479.99. I want it to run Microsoft Access (I’m building a database for a volunteer group) and to have a play at modding some VR games on the quest 3. If anyone in the comments has used this little laptop with Steam VR I’d be really interested before I press that Order button.

At this point, even if they did send out review units without malware in the future, I would still avoid them. They will almost certainly treat the review units with care while at the same time willingly allowing malware on their regular shipped units.

I saw the prices of these laptops and was very interested on how they are so cheap for a somewhat decent spec laptop. But that is scary to know there are malware already built in. Even with a fresh windows install, how are we for certain the drivers they provide doesnt have malwaee built into them? Can it be trusted now?

The malware we're tracking seems tied to setup and to installers for chrome. We've seen no evidence that the malware can survive a reinstall, or that individual drivers are corrupted.

Ignoring the major issue with windows having malware, I think it's fair to judge these at their promotional value when the manufacturer sends them to you especially if they have the day of and week after sales prices. Id encourage people setting friends and families up on machines like these, my mom is using my college MacBook pro which has a 4790hk as her daily driver so these things can be long haul solutions for friends and family

What does this is more a live in one place machine mean? Are you just used to 1000$ laptops or does it actually feel worse than the average 500$ laptop? The average 500$ does indeed not feel as nice but you can move them around a lot just fine and they won't suffer because of it. PS: I just got one and I won't be keeping it because it's limited to 30W so gaming performance is about half of what it could be but I really have no idea what you're on about with the build. It's not quite as solid as a lenovo ideapad 5 which is a few hundred $ more expensive but it feels way more solid the average 500$ laptop which I would also consider quite fine to carry around.

Oh it's TWO by 8GB. It is 16GB in total. It's a decently specced machine for the price, but I wouldn't rate it heavily for graphics intense gaming. It's plenty powerful for indie games and older titles. I rock stuff like Dead Cells and Hades, and it does fine for that.

It should be OK. You might just want to take the time to back up files and do a re-install of the OS if you notice anything strange or are worried about security issues. I dont see any evidence that the software employed here can survive a wipe and reinstall of the OS and recovery partitions.

I installed mint Linux and run that and don't have to worry about viruses. Runs much better smoother cleaner and overall Linux is great! Though I created a dual boot system so I can go over to Windows when I feel like it but for the most part I use Linux as my main stay OS.

Firstly, maybe compare both the $500 competition and the $900 competition. I can't see how this machine could compete at $900. That's a real shame about the virus. I would expect most potential buyers wouldn't be able to flash as you did.

I'd have blown Windows 11 off this anyhow after the recent revelation of their most recent blunder; however.... I don't run Windows 10 even that much, just for a few games I can't emulate. I get new hardware like this when I need it, blow off Windows and install Debian. But in this case, I have a 2 TB nvme from an older laptop (just recently died) that's going into this one. The hardware specs look nice for the price and USB -C charging in a plus in my book as well.
