There was a really major discount on the Helios 300 on the German amazon a few months ago (The price was down to 899€ from ~1250€), and while it was a bit undewhelming right out of the box, after reapplying thermal paste and upgrading ram to 16GB (mine came with 8), it is performing flawlessly!

You did the right thing - they use cheap thermal paste in the factory, so repasting helps a lot.

@@TechFinds Yeah, it had to be done. After only a little while of using the laptop my CPU would begin to thermal throttle and spike at 97 degrees while gaming. Not nice.

Got the Omen for 700 Euros, really satisfied for the time being. The SSD required updating, and I am also getting a new cooling pad and changing the thermal paste to get rid of some of the heating issues.

Great comparison. It'll be great if you can talk about the amount of bloatware installed on these machines when comparing. The omen has a ton of HP utilities which I don't need and it also comes with McAfee pre installed!! Which I consider to be malware.

Ohh, i personally don't even notice those programs/aplications installed since i always ignore them uninstall if they are disturbing (like McAfee). I though that maybe most of people don't use them as same as me so i've never mentioned about them in my reviews. Maybe i should be rather speaking of how much time it takes to uninstall them all instead of what bloatware is installed, haha. Thanks for commenting!

I had to uninstall all the bloatware on my Omen simply to make way for Ark. Getting it to fit on the SSD was a chore. I will be installing a new SSD, but did not have that option at the moment.

I have just got my HP Omen 15-dc0051nr 15.6. Superb performance. The downside is poor battery life - less than 3 hours.

Actually Omen has respectable battery life for a gaming laptop but the gaming laptops usually have poor battery life. Maybe except for Gigabyte Aero 15x, 2018 razer blade 15 or some Alienware laptops, bit it's still about 6 hours only. Such fast performance requires a lot of energy and some compromises have to be made. :) Thanks for commenting!

Love my omen 15. Upgraded the ram from 2400mhz to 3200mhz and switched out the 1tb spinny hard drive for a 1tb samsung 860 evo ssd I had sitting. Probably my favorite Lappy since my old ROG G71.

My friend has the omen and i have the helios 300. We play together the exact same games and his games always seem to freeze up for a good amount of time until he can move again. I never have that happen. You can also overclock on the helios on the fly with Predator sense and you can have your fan at max when gaming.

That's strange, something like that doesn't happen even when the laptop is too weak for a game you play. Are these games per internet? Maybe this is internet thing. I also play the same game with my girlfriend (she has Omen and i use Predator) and everything works perfectly on both laptops.

@@TechFinds yeah it's super weird. it mostly happens on Destiny. we will be in the middle of the well in the dreaming city and since we're on discord he will say "ahh man my game is frozen" and then literally 2 seconds to 10 seconds later he will say "oh nvm im moving again" so i know it's not internet because i can hear him just fine and we live relatively close with the same ISP P.S! my brother just got the special edition helios and it is absolutely badass! i have the 7th gen so i have a 60hz and his is 8th gen with 144hz and it makes a huge difference. and for the price it was only 100$ difference but i got mine a while ago. I recommend anyone to get the PH315-51 predator.

Really idk what can be the source of this problem. I also have never heard of such lag spikes in games which the laptop is capable to run easily. Maybe try to find some informations around the internet, maybe someone else had this problem before. The 2018 Predator and the special edition one are the same, just different aesthetics. I'm also using 7th gen. Predator as my main laptop but i wish i had the new one instead! It's much better value.

Both laptops struggle with cooling. There are many devices one the market with much better cooling. For example 2019 Helios 300 which has been improved a lot and it runns at low 80's now without any throttling.

I think if you're going to buy the Omen, you might as well buy a laptop that's a little more expensive ($1700-$1800) since you're going to want to buy RAM, whereas with the Helios 300 you likely will only need a new hard drive (around $40-$60). Get a cooling pad regardless of what you get ($10-$20). This will save you money in the long run because it won't overheat and do damage. I got the Helios 300 and with a good cooling pad my max temp never goes above ~80C, and that's on max settings after an hour of gaming. Honestly the Helios 300 is a little ugly (appearance-wise), but for $1000 I don't think you can find a much better laptop. Bottom-line: Helios is a better deal, and if you can afford a $1500 laptop, spend a little extra and get something worth its cost.

If it comes to price it depends on the country because for example in the UK you can buy Omen with 144hz display, GTX 1060 and i7-8750H for less than Predator with the same specs. Omen is expensive in USA but it has TB3, newer generation ports, G-Sync, RGB and so on. So better features compared to Predator. Maybe for some people this all is worth this price but you're kinda right - I personally would add some mucks more and buy Zephyrus S for example.

I'm working on a new video where i'm gonna compare Predator to Leopard. It should be done in about 10 days. Leopard has better features but the build quality, design and speakers fall short. However it's a good laptop with much better cooling than Predator so you can consider it instead.

Yes it can but Predator Helios 300 will be much better for that job because i7-8750H is 40% better than i7-7700HQ. It has also much better display for content creation than Predator 15 you mentioned.

I like Omen with 144Hz more for few reason: 1 - it is smaller so more portable. 2 - it's got better display. 3 - RGB keyboard. But it doesn't mean that the Predator is bad, because it's not at all. If you don't mind size, a little bit dimmer display and only red backlight so you get the cheapest laptop with the specs that you usually have to pay around $1400-$1500. But if you are from the UK the Omen is cheaper (£1250) and it's often on sale for £1150 on Amazon. Predator costs £1300 in UK.

Dual rank performs slightly better but you will probably won't be able to see the difference in FPS. It's maybe 5% depending on the game/program. To be honest i don't know if it's dual or single rank in both laptops, i have never checked it because i don't pay much attention to this.

I have the helios 300 and i'm very satisfied with it, but i got a question for you, do you recomend to open the laptop to clean the dust that accumulates inside? Or just using a specialized vacuum on the outside of the laptop without disassemble it is enough?

If you're experienced enough and you don't worry about warranty i recommend disassembling and cleaning to of dust. Once i opened it after one year and the heat sinks were almost completely blocked. The difference in thermals was significant after cleaning.

You can plug in a monitor or e-GPU through thunderbolt 3. Sometimes it is possible to charge leptop through that port, but not in case of this Omen.

Nice review. not much people are giving reviews for HP OMEN. Im using a HP OMEN 17 and I've no complaints about it so far. I've a friend using a Predator 300 and so far their having problems with it.

Thank You! Really? I'm using Predator as my daily driver and it works well for about one year now. A lot of people complain about overheating bit i don't have such problems - it's important to change thermal paste at least once per 6 months for some good one. I'm using Cooler Master MasterGel Maker Nano Diamond.

I think I will go for the hp omen because of the better aesthetics, screen, and also comes with g sync...another plus is that the hp omen comes with thunderbolt 3...which is great for the long run as I can put an external gpu for the games that having a hard time running....even though it is more expensive then the predator...it is worth the extra cost imo...

Yep you're right. In Predator they had to cut few things and in effect you have a laptop with good performance for low price but the rest of components is decent comparing to more expensive laptops. Omen is also smaller thanks to thin bezels and it's got slightly longer battery life. But if it comes to TB3 i would rather buy new better laptop than plug in an external GPU. It's expensive and the laptop with external GPU is no longer a laptop imo.

The hinge is not a problem at all - it's durable and stiff. Just remember tu update BIOS and switch the laptop from "default" to "comfort" mode in Omen's control center. Undervolting will be good to do as well.

Yep but note that the 4.5h is for light work. When gaming which is heavy task it lasts only 1.5h max so depending on what you gonna do using it on battery the battery life is gonna be different.

Well GTX 1070 Max-Q version of Omen runns a little bit cooler than full size GTX 1060 and you'll have much better performance but the laptop and other features stay exactly the same. Mathias Tech is my brother's channel. You're probably confused because of similare voice. ;)

It all depends if you really need Thunderbolt 3. Personally i don't even use USB Type C so it's not a deal breaker for me. Predator is a really good deal at the moment, for $999 it's nobrainer as for me but you will also need some Hard Drive for it.

Well, to be honest GTX 1060 actually is capable to run newest games with high settings on the edge of 60fps so for 2-3 years you will probably have to drop the graphics quality in newest games to have smooth gameplay. GTX 1070 would be enough for more time and Omen has that option, Predator comes with GTX 1060 only. I don't think you gonna plug in an external GPU to your laptop if your video card os not enough. TB3 is a good thing but it really depends if you need it now or in the future.

Yep, the configuration with 144Hz display comes with G-Sync but i don't know how about 1080p 60hz display and the 4k 60hz.

Haha, sorry but you have to mahe some compromises. :) As i said Predator will perform better right out of the box and you will pay much less for it. And and if it comes to omen you get better quality laptop imo but it will not perform better unles you add more RAM or somehow find it with dual channel 16GB RAM. Decide fast because from 22nd of November to 26th Predator is probably gonna be on sale on US Amazon. I don't know how about Omen but Black Friday is soon.

Have you ever changed thermal paste? It's recommended to do it after 6-8 months at least. After 11 months it lost it's abilities to conduct heat for sure.

Okay so now I'm favouring Omen 15, but got some questions: Is the build quality of Omen bad? Like with its flimsy lid and flexible case? Right out the box Predator will be better, but if I add another RAM stick to Omen, it'll be better right? Will the cooling system be a big problem? Because lots of reviews say that Omen has a trouble with heating and venting.

The build quality in Omen is good, the case is sturdy because the deck is metal and the frame around screen is solid too. In brief it's a well built laptop but if o have to compare those both the Predator feels more solid and it has metal lid. If you add one ram stick Omen will perform faster - you'll have dual channel and more ram. If you pay much attention to temperatures you better go for Predator which has not great cooling too but it's better than Omen. In The video Omen woń my thermal test but during time i found out that HP struggles with BIOS optimization for this laptop which causes overheating. When i was testing it i had one of previous updates so it was working well but now with one BIOS update it's getting worse. I hope they will fix it in the end...

Thi is a legit laptop from HP, don't worry. There are different model names for particular countries so maybe that's why you can't find this configuration on your country's HP site. I actually found one. There's no really need to review this model because it works exactly the same as 15" one. The difference is chassis. 2018 17" Omen looks as same as 2017 model when the 15" Omen form 2018 has refreshed chassis. You should also find out if the 17" Omen that you want to buy has red only or RGB keyboard because some 17" models have only red backlight. And it looks like your model has 120hz display instead of 144hz which should come with 2018 Omen. The 15" models from 2018 have 60hz or 144hz displays and tjr 17" models have also 120hz option. It's a good display too so don't worry. I think for that price it's a good deal.

2017 models come with 7th generation Inetl processors (4 cores). The laptop you want to buy is 2018 model because it has 8th gen. processor (6 cores). It will help a lot as streamming is CPU heavy duty. You should be able to stream and play VR at the same time with those specs but in some games you may not be able to set high settings.

There is something strange wit this BIOS. I think that HP struggle to optimize it for this processor and in effect with each update it's getting worse imo. I was happy with previous BIOS version but i can't roll back now. With the newest BIOS it throttles so hard now so you better go for Predator Helios 300 which throttles but not so hard and it's stable. Or if you want a laptop with really good cooling in this price range check out the MSI GP63 Leopard 8RE. I made a gaming benchmark video of this laptop and now i am working on review. So the Strix Scar II is from 2018 to - i find this laptop having the most effective cooling system of 15" laptops out there. Scar II has also faster display than Omen, it's 144hz 3ms response time (omen has probably around 5-7ms. As for now Asus is the only company that offers 144hz 3ms response time pannels in their laptops. If i had choice between Omen and Scar i would go for Scar personally since the price of Scar with configuration you mentioned and 144Hz display is nearly the same as 144hz Omen's price with the same specs. Strix has also tons of RGB (keyboard with effects, lit up logo on the lid and the RGB strip on the front) when omen has only 4-zone RGB keyboard with only solid colors (no effects). @@zttung7187 It depends if you really need Thunderbolt 3. I personally don't use it at all (i don't even use USB Type C ports) so i don't mind that Scar is missing it. Much more important for me is that the Scar has great cooling, fastest available display, good sound and georgous RGB. So you have to ask yourself what do you prefere. :)

If there's no G-Sync go for Predator. Both laptops perform pretty much the same but rececently i noticed that HP struggle with BIOS optimization for Omen and in effect the thermals are even higher than in Predator. Hopefully they will fix that in the end...

Acer Aspire 5 is not really a gaming laptop. :) You can find a powerful gaming laptop for respectable price but you can also build a PC. It's all depended on your preferences. Nowdays the laptops perform pretty much the same as desktops with the advantage of portability but a little bit higher price.

@@TechFinds - Argh I just don't know what to buy now. This is frustating. Also Ik Acer Aspire 5 isn't exactly a gaming laptop but it's good for work and decent for games. Like I can run a lot of games at 60 fps even tho they are in low settings. Like I can run Fortnite in 90fps in low settings and still get over 60 in Medium. So I don't really know. What do you reccomend? PC just seems more powerfull and a more stable platform to work and edit in without worrying about the battery. I personally prefere laptops because of portability and i don't care about battery so much as i use them plugged in most of the time. You can always replace the battery if it's dead or use the laptop plugged in only. Depending on what kind of editing you do you can choose more or less powerful laptop. For a comparison i can tell you that for my channel's needs i7-8750H is just on point. The GPU is not that impprtant for editing but as for games GTX 1060 will be good option for next few years if you don't mi d playing with medium settings. Fortnite actually runns on epic at 95 fps with this configuration.

Also the screen is much smaller then a monitor. Soumik :D I use only laptops because i don't like to sit in front of desk. I play everywhere and i fly often so i need a portable and powerful device. I tested few laptops that had really good cooling, for example MSI GP63, Asus Zephyrus M and now i am testing Acer Predator Helios 500 which 8-core Ryzen CPU which is probably the coolest laptop out there and it solves your problem with small screen (it has 17' display).

Asus FX504 is a disaster, something gone wrong when designing it because the cooling is horrible in this device. But there is a new generation of it (FX505) that is improved and much better. You have also 17" version całej FX705. I think that you can consider one of those instead of Omen. Btw. the model you want to buy comes with 120hz display and probably freeDOS as operating system so be careful if you don't intend to buy this configuration.

The FreeDOS is quite appealing to me due to not having any bloatware and I think I could get a Windows 10 Pro from the Uni so it would make sense. @@seriousedy if you're going to use an external monitor you can consider 60hz version as it is cheaper but i don't know if this pannel is available in 17" Omen. To be honest 60hz display is not so good in this laptop so maybe 120hz is an optimal option to have a good experience of using the laptop when external monitor is not plugged in. If it comes to FX505 i think that it's a nice laptop and i'm gonna review it but not in near future because i've got a lot of other videos to make. You can watch the review of FX505 on Jarrod's Tech channel - he made a great in-depth review of this laptop.

I said everything in the video. Omen will be better for that job because it has brighter display and i find the color accuracy better than in Predator. The difference is not big but if you need better one so Omen is the winner in my opinion.

I got the predator last year in December the speakers were the first to go and recently the screen has died because of the intel 630 video card which is kinda weird cuz I usually only play retro style games (Dead Cells/Path of Exile) and since its still under warranty I have to take it to a repair center hopefully I'll get to see it again before next year

Bro, I don't have this laptop anymore since i had it only for test purposes and then I had to send it back. I've heard a lot from subscribers about that this mode makes a huge difference and one time I had a possibility to see it on my own eyes so I left the tip for other people buying this laptop. When I played Watchdogs 2 on comfort mode there was no thermal throttling as it was on default mode and the average clock speed was 3.8GHz so I think it doesn't sacrifice the performance in odred to keep the laptop cool. The fans are working loud.

Previous generations are really big, heavy and they had some thermal issues. The m15 is actually the Alienware laptops that i can recommended, it's much better and more portable now - i'm gonna review it but in late future. Why not Helios 300 with GTX 1060 and i7-8750H? It's just a little but more expensive than i7-7700HQ model but it's much better. It's a hard choice between those 2 laptops you mentioned. I think i would go for Helios 300 as it has better hraphics card. GPU is usually a bottleneck you with Pavilion you won't be able to take full advantage of i7-8750H with only 3GB GTX 1060.

Well, MSI GP63 is nice one to. You can have it with the same specs as Omen and Predator and the price will be around $1200-$1300 so not bad value too. The difference is display - GP63 has 120hz pannel when Omen and Predator have 144hz screens but MSI has the best color reproduction of these laptops (100% sRGB, 79% AdobeRGB) and brighter than these two (340 niestety). You also get 3-zone RGB SteelSeries keyboard with long 1.9mm key travel dostanie and not bad cooling system with multiple heat pipes.

I'll go for helios 300 since the cooling system much better than Omen. Every laptops have temperature issues. So, i'll get a good thermal paste, remove paste from manufacturer. Re paste. Ohh i wouldn't say that it's got much better cooling, because both laptops run pretty hot compared to other laptops, but with Predator you can at least control the fan speed. Repasting is a good idea, there are few guides on KZbin how to do it. You can go for Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut or Cooler Master MasterGel Nano Diamond Maker.

@@igormatisorovic52 inconsistency in production process. Most of older models came with bad thermal paste and HP struggled to set up BIOS for powerful processors. Also their mistake was to let the cooling run only on automatic mode. As the RTX update of Omen laptops came in I get reports from people that HP improved thermal performance, but iwould still be cautious. There are better picks if it comes to temperatures.

If it's only for gaming the i5 is a good alternative but if you gonna do some hard content creation it may be not enough. 8th Gen i5-8300 has 4 cores but it's still faster than 7th gen i7-7700HQ. The 8th Gen i7-8750H has 6 cores but the CPU usage in games is max 40% because the GPU bottlenecks it in games so you won't make a good use of additional cores.

At least it should run cooler with 4-core i5. It's still better than 7th gen i7-7700HQ which I think is totally fine for gaming. And I think that it's a good choice to go for 144hz instead of other laptop with 60hz display. Despite it's o ly GTX 1060 there are many games that you can benefit of 144hz.

Does the hp omen have 2 ram slots? I think hp omen 2 is better. The only downside for it is the single ram. Good review by the way.

Yes Omen has 2 slots for RAM. You can have up to 32GB (2x16) with both laptops. I like Omen more too but Helios 300 is also a good choice, especially when someone doesn't want to pay much money. :)

Hi , I have HP Omen 15 with 1650, Tried to connect with my new 4k tv with Usb C to HDMI and also HDMI directly but i can see only 1080 in my screen resolution . I have searched the internet to get the 4k resolution but i got nothing. I'm using HDMI2.0 cable . Can you please help me with this?

I'm not familiar with that topic but generally the higher refresh rate the lower resolution you can use. That's because the connection limitations. Idk how high you can go with refresh rate at 4k tho

@@DorianTec well, Omen with 144Hz display has G-Sync bit idk how about 1080p 60hz and 4K 60hz models. I think G-Sync is a good combination with GTX 1060 because this GPU can run a lot of games on the edge of 60fps.

I will do a Review of Helios 500 but i don't think i can afford 2 versions to compare. I think i'll mention something about AMD model but can't so much as i will not be able to test it. However, first i'm gonna finish my review of Zephyrus M and it'll take some time for me to do the next review. :)

@@mon33yaoyy95 it depends on the game. There are CPU depended games like GTA V or GPU depended like Dirt 4 for example. 6 comes is actually A LOT for a laptop. I think you wouldn't even want more as it would fry your processor unles your laptop is as big as Helios 500. :) i7-8750H is a sweet spot as for now and i think it will be enough for next few years.
