EDIT/UPDATE: Since there was no response from Matthew. I went to the shop and saw various laptops. Then taking price in to consideration I zeroed down to Acer Nitro 5. Yes totally a different computer but 100 times more powerful that both Swift and Vivobook, but at the SAME price. Now I’m using it like my desktop computer (as this is heavy). Boy i took the right decision. I would suggest the same if you too use a laptop on your desk at most times. It is just so fast and you can do everything in it: gaming, video editing, office work etc.

@@LironBerisha I"m just happy AMD finally recovered from Intel's anti-trust crap. For a while, I thought we were gonna be stuck as the proverbial cow with our 3-5% YoY technology "advances". Competition is great for all of us. Though it does appear, Intel is still trying shenanigans (likely why no OEM will put a GPU better than 2060 in an AMD laptop). Old habits die hard, I suppose. Good news is that we aren't just accepting it blindly anymore.

dj zel I just bought the old nitro 5 after comparing the new one at the store. Difference: better cooling. Ans that’s about it. 9th gen - 10th gen processor not that much different. In fact 9th is still better.

@@MatthewMoniz SV Lagonda is right. Acer have a tendency to use low quality panels on their lower end laptops. There's no distinction between the CPU used as the LCD panel is completely seperate. I used to have the 1st and 2nd gen of these and it was a great laptop for the price except for the screen which was unusually dim, didn't have good contrast or good colour accuracy. For whatever reason, Acer just don't pick good panels. Dave 2D said a similar thing on his channel regarding the just released Acer Nitro.

Got the 2018 15 inch model of this with mx150 and 8th gen i5 for $600. Best purchase ever. The 15 inch version is kind of heavy, but not for me. Most people will probably be more comfortable carrying around the 13 inch version though. Been 2 years, and still works as smooth as the day I bought it. Really good for gaming (mx150 is a beast low-power gpu), at least for me (elder scrolls, gta, etc.). No problem with using ides like vs, eclipse, matlab, or arduino. Only thing I kinda regret is not getting a matte screen. The glass screen should last a long time, but it kinda strains the eyes when stared at for a long time. I guess I can get a matte screen protector if the glass screen really bothers me. This was around the time when acer aspire 5 was really popular with mx150 chip. For those of you wondering if mx250 is better than mx150... it isn't. mx250 only gives like 2-3 fps boost in most games compared to mx150. I heard 10th gen chips are really a step up from 8th and 9th gen, but I couldn't wait two years for a new laptop. Overall, the best gaming/work/long battery/low noise laptop in this price range, imo.

My lil bro is heading to Uni in a few months. I recommended this laptop after scanning around $1000 range! then I found you review. Around the same price, the Lenovo T490/590 seems to be a really good deal too. Not as portable but I've used the T430 for work over 5 years and it's a solid workhorse. Keyboard on thinkpads are also a pleasant experience thinking that Uni will require a lot of typing... on thought process, how would you choose between Swift 3 and T490?

I'm a big fan of AMD, but for this model I have to choose the Intel version especially the one with MX250. Since the memory is fixed and my country only have the 8GB model, the available RAM is reduced for GPU shared memory.

If you do 3D work or use the middle button for any reason, be aware this laptop uses awful windows 10 "precision touchpad", so you won't be able to click and drag (like rotating or panning in any 3d software or autocad) using the middle button, it won't pass right click either, just emulates context menu as a gesture. Also altgr is mapped as alt+ctrl instead of different key

Dear all, I purchased Acer laptop Acer swift 3, model SF313-52-53QN on 7th Aug 2020 and with a month time screen of laptop started showing line on it (manufacturing and quality issue). On dated 16/10/2020 submitted laptop in Acer service center with ticket no.- 3713160I. Since then I repeatedly contacting Acer's customer care and mailing to Acer officials but nobody is sharing any concrete date for repair. Delay in repair of laptop has affected my online study since last one month. Brand like Acer should understand for students problem and also focus to improve their after sales service.

Matt, you mention that the aspect ratio is good for productivity work, is the laptop powerful enough for photo editing or light video editing? Clearly not intended to be a gaming machine, but will it play games at lower settings and still be playable?
