Even after all these years this tutorial is still helpful, thank you Arvid. I was struggling a bit at the start with the luminence values. For some reason, after turning up the clamp to 100.000 in the Arnold Renderer settings, it was still capped at 1.00 when I was measuring the light intensity like you do @8:40. Then I found out the Optix Denoiser has a Clamp setting as well (Arnold optix denoiser > Main tab), turning it off helped me get the accurate values. I hope this helps anyone else out with the same problem :)

Love your work Arvid! I really have learned so much from you about lighting! Just a note about your 0.18 neutral grey, you should turn off 'color management' if you are using ACES as it is mixing it in a Rec709 space. You can test this by rendering out a 0.18 constant from Nuke in ACEScg and using that as the texture, should look the same as 0.18 in maya with color management disabled.

This is awesome Arvid , can u make one showing the live action Lighting / integration using ACES? A way to interpreting various footage types from cameras such as RED , ARRI , sony and Blackmagic ?

Hey Arvid. I have a similar scene where I'm lighting an interior (simple room, one window, one directional light and one light dome). While LookDev is fast and awesome on GPU, I cant figure out good settings for a final, noise free rendering. Would you mind sharing your final render settings for your scene? Do you use Adaptive Sampling? Sometimes, especially in interior setups, I still have massive problems of finding adequate Arnold settings where I am confindent that they are not "too much". I've been following older tutorials of you and the instructions at AFMUG, but still I feel lost sometimes when I try to reduce noise in my renders. A universal tutorial would be very helpful (CPU & GPU), maybe thats something that would help a lot of people too?!

Hey Kyan - it’s definitely not super straight forward, especially not for interior scenes. You want to have enough diffuse bounces but not too much. Something around 4-5 should be good. Then you need to make sure you don’t have any direct sample noise. So increase AA samples until direct noise is more or less clean, and then start to dial in diffuse samples. I would recommend render ring out variance and use the proper denoiser otherwise it will be a long render.

Great video. Any chance you could do a video on the AOVs and how to use them? I always get confused when trying to set them up. Looks like they can be extremely useful.

Hi Arvid awesome video thanks for sharing. Is there a practical reason why you convert your srgb textures in nuke to be in acescg space instead of using the utility color space aces-texture-srgb directly in the image node?
@arvidurs
@arvidurs 4 жыл бұрын
No no reason at all. I just wanted to show that step. You can totally just do it in the read nodes 👍

Hi, do you think it's a bad idea to update arnold renderer while you are already working on a projecct with an older version of arnold ? as it is always a bad idea to change maya's version or other software during a project, i wonder if i can try the gpu rendering or if i should only try when i'll be on a new project

In this version of arnold i noticed the sampling sttributes in the render settings are grayed out. Anyone able to shed some light as to why this is?
@arvidurs
@arvidurs 4 жыл бұрын
The GPU only relies on noise to push more samples, hence the other types are disabled. A very convenient way :)

Don't believe the hype! Arnold GPU is COMPLETELY USELESS in a professional production environment. GPU's don't have enough RAM to render production level scenes.
@arvidurs
@arvidurs 4 жыл бұрын
What would you say is enough ram for production scenes? I barely have scenes at work which go over 80GB - and that a GPU rig can handle easily.
@marcosantos4297
@marcosantos4297 4 жыл бұрын
You need enough RAM to handle all the 32 bit and/or 4K maps, which in production can number in the hundreds. GPUs with that much RAM are so expensive that there is no cost savings. Which is the point of GPU rendering in the first place. Everybody wanted Arnold GPU speed so badly they never thought to consider the limitations of GPU capacity.
