Let's chat in the comments! What's your frame made of? How has it held up?

@1younguy Look for a practice that carries SALT and try some on. See if you can tell the difference in how they feel versus the $6 frame. We are able to "relens" a SALT frame multiple times without issue, and we've also found that they're much easier to work with- they hold their adjustment better. There's many other frame lines of course but that's a good one to try as an intro.

Zyl can be used in frames combined with metal just fine. Shuron's Ronsir Zyl frames, which are the original iconic browline style, use zyl. I have a pair from the '60s that still look good.

Can I fix my broken plastic eyeglasses frame with polymethylmethacrylate resin ?? I have that as I'm a dental student and we use it to make dentures .

This video is full of wrong information and misinformation regarding the acetate production process and the acetate frame production process. The term Zyl also known as Zylonite is the same as cellulose acetate also known as Acetate. These are both the same materials. Please check your facts.

Zyl, or zylonite, is cellulose acetate. This video makes no sense to me. What acetate are you referring to, if not cellulose acetate?
@EyeSchoolwithDrD3 жыл бұрын
Cotton based acetates of higher quality compared to what we call "zyl" which is now often blended nylon injection-molded plastics. They get brittle faster, don't hold adjustments as well and overall are lower in quality than the mazzachelli and other higher quality acetates. I agree we didn't clarify very well.

@@EyeSchoolwithDrD And exactly what are they getting from cotton to make that acetate, if not cellulose? Sounds like some manufacturer has been pulling the cotton over your eyes or you're trying to pull it over ours. I'm a former optician, myself. And I'm not buying it.

Actually, they are right. Zyl and Acetate are two different types of materials. Acetate is C2H3O2. Its made from plants and is similar too Nylon. zylonite (Xylonite) is C5H9O6. Its made from pyroxylin and is similar too celluloid.

You are right, they don't know what they are talking about.. Acetate is also known as cellulose acetate or zylonite as you said... And yes, it's made from wood pulp and cotton. they had to say: Acetate/Zyl VS Plastic, not Acetate VS Zyl!! where also i'm not ok with that, because Plastic frames are not just those injected frames from china, but Plastic eye frames are a great choice in some instances. There are some scenarios where they outperform acetate frames. For example, they are a much better option when it comes to playing sports and are also much cheaper. TR90 and Grilamid are both high-quality plastics. Like acetate, it is hypoallergenic and incredibly durable with plenty of flexibility. This makes them perfect for vigorous activities. Plastic frames designed with athletics in mind usually include rubber nose pieces. These are present in many Oakley glasses as example. Oakley calls this their 'unobtanium' technology which becomes tackier when sweating and playing sports to produce a firm grip. So as you said, this video makes no sense, a better tittle would be: don't buy cheap chinese injected plastic frames, but buy a good quality Zyl/Plastic frames!!

Because of these properties it also heavier then other plastic materials????

All frames made from plastic materials are incredibly lightweight including Acetate and more often than not if you have huge thick lenses, your lens are going to weigh more than a plastic frame it's self.

Interesting didn’t realise was two types of frame materials
