Don't try this!
Checking fuel mileage without then with Acetone to see if I get better fuel mileage. I've hear a lot about doing this and I wanted to try it for myself since my truck gets terrible fuel mileage.

I used it regularly in my 1999 Nissan Altima mixed with Xlene and it increased my mpg about 3-4 mpg on the highway. This was before the 10% ethanol was added to fuel replacing mtbe as an alternative. The ethanol kills your mpg. I use acetone now to keep the fuel system and emissions cleaner in my vehicles. They knew what they were doing doing when they switched over to ethanol. They lied!

Learned about this trick way back in 2010. First tested it with a 1999 Chrysler Cirrus with a Mitsubishi 2.5L v6 engine. Highway MPG's went from 27-29 mpg to 32-34 mpg after a couple months of testing. Heard it works better on older vehicles and/or import engines.

B12 chemtool has a lot of acetone already in it. Helped bring my low mileage, corroded fuel pump back to working order. Sat at the tuner's for more than 5 months outside in snow storms so there must have been extreme phase separation

Ok, 3 things: 1: You need to start and end the test from the same location. You don’t know how much more downhill you were going there versus coming back. 2: You need to fill up from the same pump, start and finish. The automatic shutoff on pumps vary a lot, so stick with the same pump. 3: This stopped working for gas vehicles since they added ethanol. It still works for diesel. My old Supercharged Riviera got a 4 mpg boost on the highway with acetone. But it disappeared when they added ethanol. 😢

You can also increase the tire pressure to max that the tire manufacturer recommends. This info is usually on the sidewall of the tire. Another thing is to go to a taller tire, this will bring the engine rpm down when making the same speed and you will get the best results during cruise condition. Tall skinny tires have less rolling resistance than wide tires.

Not sure about this, but the best thing I've found you can do to improve fuel economy is to drive easier. Slowly accelerate. Keep RPMs and engine load low. Figure out at what speed you get the best fuel economy (depends on gearing and other factors) and use that speed when going on long trips. If you want to go all out, consider body mods to increase aerodynamics, not much you can usually do there with modern cars but older cars can use all the help they can get. My modern'ish automatic transmission car gets about 30-32mpg. 28mpg when I drive it hard. That's city driving. About the only aerodynamic mods I can see on it would be maybe a "full boat tail", undercarriage covering (not sure I want to do this as it might affect cooling of various parts), taping seams, and maybe creating a better windshield wiper cowl to help deflect air over the wipes instead of through them. I might could squeeze out another 3-5mpg with such mods. I've never seen any fuel additive that helped fuel economy.

That's correct Julio, ethanol added to the fuel greatly complicated matters when it comes to efficacy of adding acetone in the fuel. The acetone will still help to keep the fuel system clean, but in many cases it has negated the increased MPG's that people were getting before the government mandated that ethanol be added to fuel. The interesting thing is that it coincided right when many people started discovering that acetone could help with MPG's.

Just a thought. If you know someone with a scanner, I would check your fuel trim (long term, and short term) readings. You might be running on the rich (high) side. Enough to possibly impact your mileage, but not high enough to trigger check engine with something like a P0172, P0175 etc. I would also look at cleaning the MAF sensor just for the heck of it.

From Leo: Acetone removes any protective oils accelerating corrosion. It also greatly increases deterioration of rubber. Even IF it did increase mileage, the cost of additional maintenance or breakdowns would greatly out cost any mileage gain. You can prove corrosion. Take a strip of raw steel. Dip one end in gasoline, and the other in acetone. Leave it on the back porch a couple nights. the acetone end will have a lot more rust. Sadly, gas with ethanol is almost as bad as acetone.

Getting fuel averages that way is a pain. The route, traffic and weather dictates the results you get. If it's a trip you make a lot write down the consumption in both directions. Note the date, direction, traffic and weather and how many miles you are between oil changes. You may even want to note the fuel you used if you don't pump the same stuff. This will only get you a trip average. If you want a better result find a good flat run a few miles long. Drive it consistently till you burn a gallon or two of gas. Use that as your average. You could use a small temporary jug to be more precise. Just run it dry and note everything above. If you're running regular trips it's good to note usage just to keep yourself out of trouble or keep a eye on how the vehicle is running. Depending where you're drive it may use twice as much or more fuel to get somewhere than it does coming back. Even a needed oil change can add to a substantial amount of extra fuel use. Tire pressures and all that too. Way easier to get a average out of a gallon or two on short flat runs.

We are spinning at 17000 MPH. In order to do an accurate test he would have to go the same direction. on the same patch of road or do the complete trip 2x, then check the mileage.

Same test with Seafoam, same trip, same mileage, yelded a 1.5mpg improvement. In a real world experiment, I found acetone to have no value to me. As far as elevation, Tallahassee is at 100ft above sea level and Pensacola is at sea level to 50ft above. To me that is insignificant to a real world test. I was not attempting a scientific test. Just a little weekend shenanigans. Thank you for you comment and I hope you enjoyed the video.

What if you just had shittier gas from that first refill when U added the acetone..? U did use 2 or 3 different types of gas from different fuel stations also.... if you were relying to get better fuel mileage, I would have went for at least 89 or 93.. I didn’t see what octane gas u put in but, I don’t trust that 87 octane.... either way it was still around the same mileage.. maybe u have a cleaner Catalytic converter now ... ??

I've never tested the difference between Octane rating but the science would indicate that higher Octane would be less efficient in my opinion since higher octane is harder to burn. Shitty gas could be an issue too. I've always had better fuel mileage with Chevron than any other fuel. This was just a general test. If I have to get a specific fuel for it to work then I'm not interested. When I tested Sea Foam I used the same gas stations and the Sea Foam worked great. Dunno. just goofing off with these tests.

70 mph is great, but the effects on mileage suck. Aerodynamic drag increase 4 time for every doubling of speed. So 35mph is great for mileage, but slow going. 70 mph there is sooo much more air you battle. Unfortunately the sweet spot is prolly around 50 mph. Way less drag, but the benefit of way higher mileage. Retire and drive 2 lanes, not interstate.

At 2 oz./10 gal. of gasoline ... ... that equals 0.2 oz.. of Acetone per gallon (128 ounces). Less than 1/4 ounce of Acetone per gallon of gasoline ... ! Acetone is a simple solvent, ... not dynamite ..... ... 0.2 oz./128 oz. = 0.0015625 or only 1/10th of 1% of a gallon of gasoline is Acetone. I think it would be unrealistic to expect THAT to affect your MPG +/- ..... ...... any error in topping off the gas tank to exactly the same level at each fill up would affect your MPG more than that ! Different pump nozzles click off as "FULL" at different levels. Even the angle of the fill tube on the hose leading into the filler port/hose can affect the point where the trigger point happens. Two different brands of gasoline, or as we enjoy in the Great White North; "re-formulated" gasoline in the wrong temperature zone will throw your milage off.

It's unlikely it effected your fuel mileage at all. That miniscule drop in fuel mileage was probably due to a slight headwind or some other variable real world tests can't control for. Acetone is just another old timer urban legend.

Too much could affect gas mileage. Or high speed limit. I sure had good success with my Sedona mini van. I noticed I had some fancy plugs in my van for a time supposedly for better mileage but actually decreased the mileage and no additive could help to increase in mileage until I put recommended plugs the mileage jumped up and the additive helps but too much dropped the mileage. I haven't use acetone for a long time. So ratio is crucial. My van's highway mileage is around 20 mpg with acetone I got 24-25. But it could be just my imagination too.

Right - a headwind. Your test needs to be done in both directions to be valid. You need to average a there and back with and without acetone. This way wind effect can be somewhat reduced. ChrisFix did something similar all in one day.

Circle K gas? Try Exxon next time. Did you buy Circle K gas to start? No! Looks like your buying Shell gas now at the end. Is that what you bought o start? Most convience store off brand gas is junk. Water and or water-methonol injection into the air intake should work better than a gas aditive. I keep a wet sponge in the bottom of my air box. They say you get better gas mileage when its raining and i believe it. I also run marvel mystery oil in my gas, but not in the oil. I run gas saving oil aditives in 0- 20 mobile 1 rated for 5w 30 applications. I get 25 to 28 in my truck that is supposed to average 16. (Toyota tachoma v6 4x4) I also have magnets stuck all over the engine, air intake and fluid circulation and fuel line. N on the fuel line and P on the air intake. N on the engine and battery posts. The platinum denso sparkplugs are indexed and the gap was expanded. I run a special air filter that is not k and n but simular. I keep the maf sensor clean by spraying it 2 x per year with brake cleaner or maf cleaner. The oil in my k and n filter was killing my maf sensor. I have never used methonol and water in the airbox, but i may try it this winter by adding heet to my water.
