Our patient and friend John suffered a large right side Achilles tendon rupture in a game of football, which was almost a 4mm gap so needed a surgical repair. He is now 10 weeks post-operaitve and out of the boot. Today is the first day he starts the exercises at week 10 in the program. He is lucky - he does not have much calf muscle atrophy but he still has stiffness, loss of range and weakness which all need to be worked on carefully. We are also working on his walking to reduce the limp and improve his activity through the tendon when walking.
1️⃣ Isometric Calf Raise
2️⃣ Calf Raises (Repeated)

6:23 is exactly where I am now. Trying to remove my limp by taking shorter steps. I am doing non-operative route. Anyone watching this video hoping for a magic cure to the limp/knee pain caused by the unusual walking posture keep up the calf raises and take equal short strides, its really great advice. It will get better!

When would you recommend this for a non-operative recovery?

Tough one as it depends on what is the cause of the pain

Thank you for the video! Here you show how John's good leg has to take shorter stride because the flexibility and strength is lacking. What specifically will help with increasing the stride length? Is it just strengthening and stretching the calf (and giving it enough time)? Or do other factors such as foot intrinsic muscle strength or balance/stability issues matter?

Great content. I'm currently on week 8 of a non operative route. I am still in a Vacoped boot with 0 degree rise and the normal sole. I'm hoping to get into shoes next week. At what point should I start Dorsiflexsion exercises. At this point am I past the point of being worried about healing long? Thanks for making these informative videos.

It’s helpful a lot. I operated achilles tendon in Nov 23. Right now i can walk but not normal 100%. I try to walk 1 kilometer every day and doing physical therapy. Could you help me to recommend the shoe to walk ? What brand of shoe? Thanks

Have a look at our Achilles rehab program at physiorehab.com. Hard to give exact model of shoe but perhaps start with HOKA and see what model is best by going into a store and getting advice from he shoe specialist

I am 9 weeks post-op and have been taken out of the boot. When I take steps in my sneaker, it is very difficult and painful to bend my toes on the injured leg. Is that normal and what can I do about it?

hi, I had a surgery left Acchilles tendon rupture and I was surprised that I followed the protocol given by my surgeon doctor and it states to start PT at week 3. Had surgery on Jan 2 and Jan 23 I had my first PT session. First 2 weeks with cast, then 4 weeks w boots and I started wearing sneakers at the end of week 6. Is that normal? I wonder if its kinda aggressive and too forward. I am at end of week 8 and finally I feel a bit more comfortable walking without feeling too sore. Feedback or suggestions I would be very appreciated. Thanks a lot Sebastian

In my experience people are in boots for 8 weeks, but if you are feeling ok then I wouldn’t stress at this stage. Just make sure you are doing the strength work consistently and not overdoing it. For my full program and guide head to physiorehab.com

Is it possible to recover from this injury/surgery in your 40s and walk without a limp?

I'm 45 and had it repaired. I'm 10 months in, and I don't think I have a limp. My foot still gets sore most evenings. I did limp for a good while just because it was uncomfortable to take a full step.
