@@TopherspinMeteorites can I ask if you use straight or diluted ferric chloride and if diluted what was the ratio? We have one we want to etch and have the ferric chloride and want a better shot of getting it right the first time.

If you only get needle thin lines does it mean its been cut wrong or its not a Meteorite?
@TopherspinMeteorites Жыл бұрын
I am not sure what you are asking.

I believe they're asking if the widmanstatten pattern is much thinner like a Muonionalusta

So ive etched meteorite before, but im currently trying to etch an inlay inside of silver and im not sure if the soldering process destroyed the widdenstat pattern?
@TopherspinMeteorites Жыл бұрын
I am not a metallurgist. But will try to help. What meteorite are you trying to etch a sliced piece of?
@ryandavis4448 Жыл бұрын
@@TopherspinMeteorites it's a muonionalusta meteorite. I'm pretty sure heating it up ruins the widdenstat pattern, becuz it will not etch. I hard soldered it to a silver ring and that heating process must've destroyed it.
@TopherspinMeteorites Жыл бұрын
Very highly possible. I have a 2kg Gibeon that will not etch. I was told that some got more heated (in space) than others. I am really sorry to hear the pattern is gone for you.

@@TopherspinMeteorites UPDATE: I went and bought new Muriatic acid and tried it after work??? It worked perfect. So I now am sitting on a muonionalusta ring, surrounded by silver. Now...I just have to be careful how I darken it...and coat it...
@ryandavis4448 Жыл бұрын
@@TopherspinMeteorites pretty stoked it actually worked. But I'm at a standstill. It's etched beautifully and surroundedby a silver ring. I just gotta take breath and figure out where to go from here.

Very cool! I’m beginning to like the irons a bit more every time I see a video like this!! You’re not afraid of the acid getting in that crack and eating away the rest of the meteorite?
@TopherspinMeteorites Жыл бұрын
No worries at all. The acid is washed off in less than a minute. It can't do any damage other than a hair's deep since it is not allowed to penetrate. Good question. They are put in the oven or dehydrator before sealing them.
