I would highly recommend A Doll's House by Henrik Ibsen. I just finished it in my literature class and loved the main character Nora's character development throughout the play. I also just read A Midsummer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare and loved that as well. Thanks for the recommendations, nearly no one i know likes plays so it was nice to add some to the TBR.

I agree -- A Doll's House is very good! It's a great early feminist work.

I haven't read many plays but some of these sound really interesting so I'll check them out sometime. We did read Macbeth in high school and I actually really liked that one. The only other ones I've read have been Stephen King screenplays.

I love reading plays, and I agree that it's an easy medium to read in. When I do creative writing it's usually in a play or script like format, it's just a really easy and comfortable thing. I haven't read 12th Night, but I used to love She's The Man, a movie with Amanda Bynes, which I guess is an adaptation. I definitely want to read more plays, thank you for the recommendations!

+Paper Faerie She's The Man is hilarious! My friend also showed me a Bollywood movie that's based off of She's the Man (and also Twelfth Night) and that one was also really great!

I highly recommended Catholic School Girls, it's a drama but it has a lot of comedic elements in it I discovered it when I was looking for a scene to perform for my state's district thespian festival during my senior year of high school and fell in love along with a giant portion of girls from my drama class since it was one of the few plays we could find with an all female cast

I am intrigued that there i a character named Wendla because that was my great great aunt's name. She lived down the street from me growing up. Her family was from Finland though.

So happy to see a favorite plays video from someone else! I did one as one of my first booktube videos, and I felt kind of silly because I hadn't seen anyone else do one. Rosencranz and Guildenstern are Dead is one of my favorites, too. And the names in Spring Awakening are pronounced Vendla and Melkeeyor, if writing them down phonetically really does anything to help.

If I hadn't been a German major and spent tons of time reading about people with crazy German names, I'd have no clue either.

i would also really recommend neil labute's work- it's SOOOO dark but amazing!!!i also had the pleasure of meeting him and talking to him about writing, as a play i wrote won a contest he was running. despite the incredibly dark material of his plays he was such a kind and cool person to talk to. my fave plays besides spring awakening are probably romeo and juliet (iKNOW OK), hamlet and as you like it (which i was in!)

So exciting to find someone else who loves plays! +Jen Hugs Books Recommended you to me. Love Oscar Wilde agree hilarious to read - even better on stage. I just made a video recommending some modern plays for people to get into - I think you'd really enjoy Neil LaBute's The Shape of Things. xx

I'd never heard of that first story from Shakespeare, but it MUST have been the inspiration for the movie She's the man!

I never realized how many modern movies or ever older ones are based on Shakespeare's plays until my teacher showed us when I was 11. the only Shakespeare plays I've studied are a midsummer night's dream which I performed in drama when I was also 11 and Macbeth which I just studied in English last year but coming from London I still love Shakespeare

We recently read The Importance of Being Earnest in AP Lit and I agree- it was so funny and I loved it! It’s awesome that you played Gwendolen! I definitely recommend As You Like It, one of Shakespeare’s comedies that also is about identity and its soo great! I was recently in a musical edition of it Omar my high school which was such an amazing experience!
