I completely agree with the lack of platonic relationships thing. Even though YA contemporary is one of my favourite genres, it becomes extremely repetitive and boring. I also find that a lot of the times when there is a platonic male/ female frienship, one of them is gay which is fine, obviously, but it can feel like a plot device which I am less ok with.

+Lamp Sunnies To me, it's the romance genre in general that erks me, it just never feels realistic. Maybe one book here or there, but most of them look the same to me.

It's like the only way they could be platonic friends is if one of them physically can't be attracted to the other *rolls eyes* like more LGBT characters is great but not if they're there just to be the gay friend...

Gillian Sullivan same (SPOILERS BELOW) it really winds me up in Mockingjay, when Peeta had been brainwashed and was psychologically shattered, and even outside of the love triangle Katniss and Peeta were friends and with everything else going on Gale spends 65% of that book whining that Katniss isn’t giving him enough attention and being jealous of the guy who’s been tortured and driven to madness. It’s like being jealous of someone with a terminal illness for getting more attention from your mutual friends...

As a crazy Tolkien fan I do get it. The Hobbit started as a sort of bedtime story that Tolkien told to his kids, so it has that episodic feel to it where each chapter is each night's story. Plus, it wasn't originally so connected to Middle Earth since Lord of the Rings hadn't entered Tolkien's mind yet, so the characters aren't as full as they are in the movies where Peter Jackson had the benefit of all the backstory. I totally agree with you about Tauriel. So many fans like me despise her character simply because she wasn't in the books, but I just fell in love with her. She was a good female character who didn't hit you over the head with the "I'm a strong female, you must worship me because I am strong and female" message. The movies aren't perfect, but they're certainly no where near terrible.

Yes! I totally agree with you on the male/female platonic relationships. YA often makes it seem like these things don't exist, or if it does, it's because one of them is LGBTQ or it eventually develops into romantic feelings (usually one sided) anyways, which usually just ruins a really awesome friendship.I also agree with your opinion on The Hobbit and its movies; I have read The Hobbit a couple of times, and both times it was just okay for me. I wasn't getting any of the magical feelings everyone else was; but the movies are awesome, and I was able to connect with each one of the characters so much better and actually care for them and what happened during their adventure.

Anna and the French Kiss is probably the best one out of all the companion novels, but I enjoyed Lola and the Boy Next Door too but not as much. They do seem to follow a similar formula. If you do read one of them (though I don't blame you if you don't because my sister hated it), I loved it Anna and the French Kiss so much. It definitely might be for younger readers if you can't really stand when characters make bad/dumb decisions (which is pretty much the whole book because you're rooting for two characters to get together finally). It was the first book I've ever cried during reading where a character DIDN'T die. It really captures Anna's emotions in a way that makes you feel like you're her. It is one of the few YA books where the romance truly felt genuine. I hope this might convince you enough, though maybe you have already since this video is from 2015.

Jakob Sandevill I didn't mind Tauriel for the most part. After a while I actually started to like her character. However I have to agree that she way too much screentime. I thought her whole subplot was very recycled and the romance with "the hot dwarf" felt very forced and out of nowhere. It would have been alot better if they kept her as more of a side character and maybe expanded her friendship with Legolas. For a trilogy called "The Hobbit" there was very little hobbit and way too much elves and dwarves.

I’m going to have a hopefully awesome platonic relationship between my male main character and my main female character in the book I’m gonna be starting. My female character is a lesbian and is in a relationship, and they’re pretty much gonna be my main males OTP 😂. And I thought about the opening their friendship to my hopefully future readers with: “*My main males name* believes that everyone has different kinds of soulmates. And when it comes to best friends, *my main males name* soulmate is *my main females name*.” but I’m hoping that’s not cliche 😊❤️. Ugh, I kept messing my comment up 😂😂.

If you’re looking for a series with platonic male-female relationships, the Relentless series by Karen Lynch is really good. It’s fantasy and has a badass female protagonist. You might not like certain stereotypes in it, but it’s worth a read.

I agree about Gale, but really I do not like Katniss. She is oblivious; I do like the books though. I do have a question of what book tubers mean by contemporary? As a lit prof, I would mean anything written at present. Clearly this is not what you mean though because many of the books you mention are contemporary pop lit by that definition. I have heard this phrase on several people's videos, so thank you for your answer.

+Jayna Lascaibar Contemporary novels (at least in my understanding of the definition I'm not an expert on this so I may be completely off) usually revolve around the life and experiences of teenagers (or adults) most often in respect to their relationships, romantic and otherwise. Often times they can also be stories of self discovery. They take place in modern day and have a real setting and events that could happen in real life. In other words they're not fantasy/science fiction/magical realism/etc. Some examples of contemporary books would be pretty much anything written by John Green like The Fault in our Stars, Paper Towns, Looking for Alaska. Also Rainbow Rowell, like Fangirl, Landline, Eleanor and Park. All of these for the most part are centered around relationships and/or romance. Some examples along the self discovery line would be Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe or The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Both of them have relationship/romance aspects within them but the focus more on the characters discovering who they are. I hope this helps a bit!

+A Clockwork Reader Thanks. After posting the question I did a quick search and found a similar answer. Many University sites were leaning toward my understanding in their course descriptions, but the third entry I found described it as contemporary works that do not also fit into a separate genre (e.g. fantasy, science fiction) also known as contemporary literary realism. I think that what initially raised the question for me was that some other book tubers were using the term most often with what I would consider romance novels, and they were also referring to them as light reads. So I thought maybe the romance novel had been relabeled. What can I say, I am old and out of touch. Thanks for your wonderful content and shining personality. I can tell you truly love reading. I will continue to watch and enjoy.

At the book trope question: ROWAN AND AELIN. Rowan x Aelin is one of my favourite ships in the ToG series, but I found myself wishing that they could've stayed friends, because their friendship was hilarious and unpredictable and beautiful. The like/hate they had for each other made me laugh, and when they fell in love, I loved it of course (I am a hopeless romantic) but I still wish that their friendship lasted longer.

I fully agree with more platonic male-female relationships in YA! Especially if they are the main characters! Re: Anna and the French Kiss, I was put off reading that very popular book due to, I read, constant slut-shaming of female characters, demonizing of the love interest's girlfriend. I just can't with that girl-on-girl hate.

I completely agree with a bunch of your answers. Although I don't like any ship from The Hunger Games for some reason. I'm also not a fan of contemporaries and rarely reach for them either unless I'm looking for LGBT characters, but I have somehow read a lot of them this year and usually been disappointed. The Anna and the French Kiss series is one that didn't leave me mostly disappointed, however. I think the only thing that made me not love those books is just the fact that I'm not a big fan of contemporaries. I also didn't relate to Anna or Lola as characters. They're fairly quick reads if you do decide to check them out.

+Unicorn Hunter Books Yeah I think the big thing for me with contemporaries is that I tend not to relate to the characters and I don't really know why that is. But yeah definitely if they have LGBTQ main characters, I'm far more likely to pick them up.

I think my main thing with Gale is because of the end of Mockingjay, I never fully got over that lol. But yes! That's the thing with the Shatter Me series. It's really easy to read but there was no lasting impression.

Yes that is true, the end of Mockingjay made Gale a less likeable character - I suppose that was just Suzanne Collins way of justifying the love triangle choice! But then I don't think Peter would ever have been the same again... so many conflicted feels!

I do understand your opinion about The Hobbit, and I completely respect that because I know a lot of people with the same opinion. I, however, must disagree unfortunately. I read The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings long before the Hobbit films came out, so I have a bias towards the book. I still love the Hobbit films, but I find they have a lot of problems, including adding too much extra unnecessary details (it really should not have been more than 2 regular length movies), and trying too hard to connect to the Lord of the Rings film trilogy (my favorite films of all time BTW). There are many things from the films that were not in the book that I loved, like Tauriel, Legolas (
