My Dad was an Army MP, my (now ex) husband was Army before becoming a LEO & my Granddad was in the Royal Highlanders as a Medic in WWI (yes, one). He died when I was two, but I still remember going to the beach with him and touching the scars all over his chest & shoulder. My other memory of him was right before he died. My Mom & Aunt snuck me up into his hospital room & I was crawling all over him. They tried to grab me, but he MADE them stop (I can still picture him in the bed with those slats thinking "why do they have him in crib like mine?" LOL). The reason that stayed in my baby brain was bc I felt just how much he loved me. It didn't traumatize me seeing his scars or him in the hospital. I ended up working with abused kids. Please understand: I am *NOT* trying to tell you what to do~ *NEVER.* Just sharing my Granddad's story (kinda mine, but MOSTLY HIS. I've studied up a lot on WWI & man, I can't believe he VOLUNTEERED *[as a Canadian, "Conscientious Objector", bc he didn't want to be Infantry, he'd heard about the mustard gas both sides were using, so that's why he was a Medic, but Canada wasn't even IN THE WAR, YET],* for the Royal Highlanders, KNOWING he'd wearing a SKIRT (!)(OK, a KILT, but for REAL?!). After my Nana died in 1982 (she was 99 years old & right after my 1st son was born), we were clearing out her things & found a stack of _LOVE LETTERS_ from *My Granddad to HER WHILE HE WAS OVERSEAS!* OMGosh... They're truly the *_MOST BEAUTIFUL THINGS in the WORLD!_* For NINE MONTHS he wrote to HER... *"My Dearest Daisy... Love, Harry".* He had his shoulder blown nearly off in June, 1918 & spent four months in a hospital in France & got home to Winsor, Canada on Nov. 1st 1918. They were married on Nov. 4th, just a week before the end of the war. I'm sorry for what you're going through. Your story matters & your experiences matter. What has been going on in our country the past few decades has not been accidental. In order to successfully take over a nation the size & scope of ours the ppl involved knew they'd have to be patient & cunning. They HAVE BEEN. But they didn't count on the resilience of ppl like you. And me. And our ability to seek one another out. We're even MORE PATIENT. And MORE TENACIOUS. And MORE CUNNING. If you're interested, maybe write some "novels", then you say they're just fiction if anyone accuses you of being too graphic, or anything. Just a thought. God Bless You~ Thank You for Your Service! (PS. PLEASE, if you do any writing, also include this screenname & I'll keep an eye out for it~ THANKS!)

That was the most hilarious, and true. I was in the Navy and literally had a woman ask me if I knew her son in the Army.....in Germany. She then askes what all my ribbons meant and I went full "I'm gonna get you sucka!" on her her. I told her my ribbons were for typing, filing, and horseshoe excellence. etc. The whole time she was nodding her head and smiling. She then asked what my "Rate Symbol" in the middle of my rank meant. Now, I was a Sonar Technician, Anti-Submarine Warfare. My symbol was a pair of headphones with a horizontal arrow running through it. This was the early 90's so I told her I worked for Morale, Welfare, and Recreation and I was a Walk-Man Technician. I supported the troops by providing free repairs to any personal radios or head-phones to help keep their spirits up in difficult situations. She just kept nodding her head and smiling and said, "Wow, that's really important!"

Civilian here. I grew up with the military all around me, and for the most part. I treat servicemen exactly the same as everyone else. I have a hobby where most of my collegues are servicemen as well, and when they talk about work my input is basically work related things, or I stay more quiet and let them do their thing rather than trying to relate in any way or trying to ask questions that dont need to be answered. I guess my question to you all is when presented with a situation where everyone is talking about it around you, what is the correct course of action? Im not the best social guy in a regular setting, but i dont want to be a fucking idiot either. Thanks!

Funny story about the "Do you know this person" part. Was a Navy submariner 4 1/2 years. Got out on medical. Moved back to Orlando, my home town. Was at the store buying some equipment for a new job and ran had a random woman start talking to me at the checkout counter. Got around to talking about the Navy, and she asks "Do you know EM2 James (not actual name) on the USS Scranton?" Why, yes, actually, we used to chill in the smoke pit when I was taking a break from fixing his sub. Turns out, I was talking to his mom. Talk about a 1 in a million.

My Father was a Veteran of the Korean War as he only spoke about his service 3 or 4 times in my presence as his responses were very short. My Father one time said that there was four things he remembered the most about war was the brutality of War, the children of war and the terrible smell of death in War. My Father said nothing more but a couple of tears rolled down his face as I had only seen my Father have tears one time before when his daughter(my older sister)passed away.

My grandpa and two of my grandma's brothers were Vietnam Veterans and it was just an unspoken rule that nobody asked about it. They didn't like the topic. My great uncles took it particularly rough. It was before my time but other family members said they came back completely different people. They never knew if it was the war that changed them or the addictions they came back with. Both had pretty bad mental health issues until their deaths with one of them dying as a direct result of that lifelong addiction. My grandpa faired better. Both mentally and physically. But he still doesn't like to talk about his time there. I can't imagine it being much different for veterans of more recent conflicts.
