the problem is that the wheels eat into usable space. they could still contour around the wheel wells and make the bottom drawer height larger than the top one (or vice versa).

I agree completely Rob; either a single large drawer on wheels or a slightly taller packout (like the recently announced XL chest) on wheels with two drawers deep enough to accommodate a circ saw and other bulky tools.

One thing you could do is get the hand truck and put the drawers on the bottom and either continuing putting the big tools in the crate or get the new xl tool box and put that on top of the drawers

I’ve been loving my pack out system for the same reason, i can keep my tools organized and kitted to fit the task. For what i do..mostly commercial work, stairs are the kryptonite for packout. Sometimes I’m on jobs where i have to work on the 3rd, 4th and 5th floors, all in one day. That’s when i use the backpack. But for most residential work and single story jobs...packout is a time saver.
@mattwhite2294
@mattwhite2294 3 жыл бұрын
Totally agree. I’ve gone back to systainers because of this. Fully loaded packout boxes are to big and bulky to be unstacking and re stacking every time you need something out of the lower boxes. Smaller boxes containing individual tools and accessories work a lot better for me. Bring a lot less unnecessary stuff into the job now aswell.

I went from using sustainers to pack ours due to the drawers but you’re right they’re so big and heavy I often don’t bother moving them into the job site. Why don’t sustainers make drawers bigger than their 3 door units!? They’d be perfect!!!
@jamesnm21

Why would you keep the boxes stacked in the first place? You wheel them in and unstack them and have everything accessible. Ridgid pro gear 2.0 has the removable cart to put drawers on the bottom so you can keep a couple units stacked for a work surface though which is pretty handy. Other than that you just set em out and go to work.

You’re right Rob, nothing new about modular tool storage by function. Way back in the 1970’s I was in a Navy Fighter Squadron of F-14 Tomcats and depending on each type of maintenance action we had created toolboxes in order to perform those tasks. We had an Engine Pull toolbox, a hydraulic pump toolbox, or preventative maintenance toolbox, etc. Long before Packout arrived 40 years later. Our boxes lacked one thing, interlock. But toting around heavy toolboxes on aircraft carriers is not something that one would want to do all the time but hey it worked great for what it was. And, we were young! Back in the 80’s and 90’s I had my own tools arranged very much like I did when I’m the Navy and once Packout hit the market, I just knew it was going to be a hit. I’ve bought in lock, stock and barrel into this storage system, and you guessed it, it’s all arranged according to tasks. But I have not committed to those drawer packouts yet, and I’m not exactly sure why I haven’t seen a viable use for them, other than their lack of water intrusion prevention. Yet. But I agree, they need a larger drawer for some of the bigger stuff. It only makes sense.

Why don't you make a custom drawer for the circular saw? You can attach a packout plate to the top & load everything else above it in the stack.

I think a home run would be to take the packout rolling toolbox, change it into a single, large front opening drawer. Boom, fit your big tools in there, no more having to take apart the stack to get into the bottom.

Only issue is cost to consumer. Thus thing could be $350 and if it doesn't sell enough then Milwaukee loses. That's the main hold up. Your talking retooling and more marketing to let people know there is something new, plus how many people are on to something else for storage since packout has its issues.....I play the shark tank man on these issues and it all comes down to profit. I just don't know if they would make money on it. Even tho I would buy about 600 just for myself!

Great video, Rob! 100% agree! Milwaukee needs to put a single, deep drawer in the current drawer shell. Additionally, the new deep XL box that hasn’t even shipped yet also needs to have a single deep drawer option. These could be used with the larger, heavier tools near the bottom of the stack either on the 2 wheeled cart (hand truck) 4 wheeled rolling dolly. Thanks for sharing your journey. The personal touches, insights are invaluable to help each of us find what will work best for our individual situations. We appreciate all you do for the working community, home owners and DIY’ers alike.

Anothor great video Rob!! As a custom cabinet installer working directly out of a shop,keeping tools compact around the boxes has taken some time to dial in. The last 2 years have been full of a changing lineup of packout. I started with 2# 3ft tall stacks on roller boxes,I had every tool with all its accessories in its own box. Next came trading a dolly for 1 stack. Next I added 6 mounting plates up high on the truck walls,and went to the dolly only. Next was addition of crates 1 caulks/glues, 1 for touch-up paint gun+accessories ,1 for misc hardware ,and 2 more for ratchet straps/ junk/etc. Last week I received my pre-ordered 3 drawer stack which cleared out my 15' tote for hand tools ,and several smaller boxes . My Makita tracksaw shares the large box with a barrel jigsaw ,all their blades,12 batteries shared with mitersaw and the vacuum. A medium box holds all drills,drivers and bits. Now the only floor space being used is the dolly stack,and the mitersaw. All tools are on the walls for ala-cart picking and adding to the single stack.

Unpacking is a time sink. And it spreads out the whole system -- I have to use a work table to then hold all the boxes from the tower. Drawers seem like the solution BUT I've already bought the other systems. One stack the HAS worked is my "painting" setup. Easy to move from room to room. Thanks for a great video!

I have a Painting set up that needs upgrading. Basically it is the large painter's duffel bag I purchased based on the encouragement of my rep at sherwin williams, supplemented by several clear plastic bins. It kinda sucks, tbh Don't know if you use the led lighting system on your painting setup, but I would consider it, because I am always bringing the led light tripod from room to room. ugh

Hey here's a thought. Use the packout cabinet as the bottom box. Put that on the packout dollie system. Then use an actual dollie to lift the tower and take it to where you're going. Now you have a tower on 4 casters with the bottom cabinet being large enough to put your circular saw etc. Pricey but may be a decent solution until they come up with something better

I know this is an older video but i am the same way with organizing my tools and hated the constant unpacking the upper stuff just to reach the bottom bigger crates, but the packout dolly gets you mobile and then your drawer setups go on the bottom and that gets your bigger boxes on top and available without unstacking every time!! It works great👍🏼

That's the main reasons I haven't switched to Milwaukee packout and still use Ridgid stackable. Cost and innovation. Ridgid is cost effective until Milwaukee perfects their system. For the most part it should be all drawers. 1 large, 2, 3 and a 4 drawer for small tools and accessories. It's a total pain to stack and unstack constantly. And they also need a heavier duty dolly.
@jeffpowell8308

I agree Rob. I have 14 different packouts and I get tired of un-stacking them. I don't have any drawers yet but I will get a 2 drawer one that I plan to store my batteries in. Currently I have my most used tools stored loose in my van. I hang my rear handle circular saw just inside the rear doors using the rafter hook. I keep my impact on the shelf that is the home for my table saw and miter saw.

Hi Guys!!! Stacking and unstacking Packout boxes is definitely a drag! Thumbs Up on the drawers! I just wish they had better protection in wet environments. I moved to Packout from a rolling tool bag because my tools would rust in the tool bag. Maybe a vertical lid with an o-ring seal can be clamped over the drawers when not in use. And, a large Packout box with a single drawer would be nice for bigger tools. Keeping a centralized set of Packout boxes in the van and using a few Packout pieces for mobility is probably the best way of using Packout. I'm keeping my main Packout boxes at a centralized location, and using the Packout Compact Toolbox and small Packout organizers for mobility in a handyman environment.

They could have done sealing drawer fronts too! Take a look at the DeWalt tstak drawers sometime, they figured it out. One of a few complaints I have on the packout drawers. Flimsy dividers (I made metal ones) and the bottom of the drawers flexing too much being my only other complaints. Besides that I love my 3 drawer. A front cover like an old machinist toolbox could even double as a work surface too.

Rob i couldn't agree more. Im the same way with trying not to unload boxes as much as i can. Whatever I rarely use id leave on the bottom box. The bottom box has been the main complaint I think when it comes to packout. It gets the most complaints. Mine would be it can't unclip from the base. The handle can't remove without making accessory changes. It doesn't have drawers which they should've included one big drawer beneath the box. Lastly there's some space taken up from the shape of the wheels instead of Milwaukee extending the box out a little further and the inside can be a square shape instead of a bevel at the bottom. The list can go on and on but I'm surprised Milwaukee didn't put more thought into some of this

@A Concord Carpenter / ToolBoxBuzz. Thanks Rob for sharing your journey into tool and parts storage as a working carpenter. Hopefully, Milwaukee and even the other tool companies really think about how to make every trade's job easier. I like Dewalt's Toughsystem 1.0 system and the DS Carrier hand truck they made where I don't have to remove everything above it to get to any particular box. But in going to Toughsystem 2.0, those boxes aren't completely compatible with the DS carrier (doesn't lock the boxes to the carrier). Milwaukee really invested R&D into their PACKOUT line and it can only get better with more drawer options like you and I need and want. Hope you, the crew at TBB, and your families stay safe and well.

I wrote Milwaukee and asked them to make the 3 draw unit with wheels basically because then you don't have to remove everything to access the bottom bin. For me a two large draw bottom with a 3 draw on top of that with the vacuum on top and the deep half space organizer next to that would be ideal. The amount of times you'd have to remove items would be reduced to if you had a vac and half organizers on top. I even asked them if there was a way they could make a front loading lunch box lol Anyways I doubt they'll listen to some guys random email, but I know they would definitely listen to a Concord Carpenter 🙂

I ended up just buying 2 of the three drawer setup, stacked on top of the rolling box. I was able tools , fittings and battery-powered tools, within the six drawers. The rolling box on the bottom only holds my large power tools. It is they're mainly just to have mobility.

Great video as always, Robert. I’m a huge fan of the packout system as well but do agree that the stacking and unstacking isn’t ideal. I purchased the packout 2 wheel hand cart and was anticipating using that with drawer boxes on it instead of the large standard rolling box. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to get my hands on any drawer boxes and it sounds like they’re going to be back ordered for a while. It would be great if Milwaukee made the bottom box as a single deep drawer because I too keep my sawzall and circular saw in there. I do think Milwaukee is just getting started with packout though and will continue to release more innovative solutions.

If they come out with a rolling base that maybe has 2 drawers: one deep enough for a 7-1/4 rear handle circular saw and then an extra thin one above it; just thick enough for a 30' tape measure laying flat so you can put tapes, knives, squares, marking tools etc. If they come out with that - I'll jump on board!

I leave the drawers (2 and 3 drawers version) in the back of my Transit 250 and that also has been working out well. I'm a BIG FAN of the crates as they allow me to access my most needed tools easily without having to open and close the lids. I also have the Packout templates physically attached to the floor of the truck so everything doesn't fall all over the place. Wasted van trips due to lack of organization does suck and the quest of the perfect system seems unobtainable so compromises always are made. I totally agree that taking boxes off to get to the bigger tools that likely only need a few minutes use sucks. Thanks for the vid.

I hear you about the drawers. When I needed a mobile storage system the packout didn't have the drawers available. The tough system didn't have enough drawer options and the systainers seemed too basic and plastic for the price. I ended up with the tstak-versastak system. It has been great, but I would have gone with packout drawers if they were available when I started this journey. Open bins on a towers of drawers is now how I install and work in the shop. All the same tools in all the same places.

I've seen they now offer a big box with a flip up front door that tucks out the way when you open it. Not a drawer, but still provides access without unstacking. Strangely, this system seems like it might work better for DIY folks than for pros. I don't need to move everything from my garage to the job site in the livingroom. I could have a "hanging kit" for when I needed to hang something and an "electrical kit" for when I needed to do some wiring. I could separate my automotive tools into dedicated kits as well. So rather than having to take tools out of drawers, put them in a caddy, then put them back when the job was done I could just grab the appropriate kit and go.

Man you hit the nail on the head. I currently use Dewalt tough system (hate it) and festool sustainers. There is no worse feeling then knowing I need to unstack 4 or 5 tough boxes in the trailer to get to the one tool in the bottom box i need for a punch list item.

Exactly why I haven't gotten into pack out, myself. The tool that you need for a "quick fix" is going to be in the bottom bin. It's Murphy's Law in action.

Wow. I couldn't have found this video at a perfect moment. Just started investing into the packout system. Got the big box on the way with a couple parts/tool cases. Now I want a drawer system. I'm a residential construction electrician so I'm always back and forth on rough and finish work. May start doing a packout for each and may even invest into another tool belt to isolate what I reach for in rough and finish work. Too many times I've been reaching for a screw and get jabbed by a wire staple. Ouch. Awesome vid! I also agree. Milwaukee needs a bigger drawer case. I bet they have it engineered and are just selling what they have currently so we all end up paying twice once a large drawer is ready.

I Agree. The bottom dolly box needs to be a single drawer for the larger tools. I hate having to unstack multiple boxes to get in there for something.

This video is 2 years old so I know there's no future predicting, but now there's toughbuilt stacktech that is making a stack you don't have to disassemble to have access to anything. Plus lots of transit options like a hand truck they snap to and such

I agree ! Big drawer units. That’s reason I haven’t changed to packouts. I built my own big drawer units and used them for a few years but they were just to heavy to move around.

I just remove everything from the bottom packout usually and that works for me. I think it will especially if you have the drawers directly above the rolling packout. Then it's just a case of unclipping once and you're free to reach bigger tools etc.

I love the packout system. But, as you point out, Milwaukee was short sighted on a few features of the packout. Fortunately there are some pretty crafty 3D printing and metal milling enthusiasts that have created some very useful accessories to the packout to make it even better. There are level and framing square holders you can attach to the sides. There is an accessory called a joey that you can mount to the aluminum struts to attach another packout box or crate in front so your not staking so high. Cup holders, and packout feet so you can turn anything into a packout accessory. Even adapters to make dewalt tough system attach to packout. The possibilities are endless.

There are rafter hook slots that attach to the aluminum struts so you could carry the sawzall there and keep it out of the crate so you could use the crate for other things.

As long as I can get all my stuff inside with minimal trips I know everything's there. No more going to the truck and I'm happy with that if I have to take my setup down I think that's exceptable compared to the formentioned. Congratulations on your packout journey.

Sounds to me like you need the dolly! Then you can make it anyway you want it and honestly put the drawers on the bottom. It would be smart for them to come up with one where it could literally slide out of the bottom similar to like a crate shoved in a casing.

I totally agree on a larger drawer unit, but I have a possible solution for your circular saw. You could use the “packable Joey” on your bottom rolling cart, and attach another crate to the “Joey”. I have been considering this for a while and I think I’m going to pull the trigger.

Turn the big bottom box into a single drawer system and it would be perfect. I agree with you. That is currently where I store my circular saw. A single drawer is the solution

Yes my biggest complaint is stacking and un stacking. You get what you need out and stack it back then realize you left something and repeat! I actually started bring two carts at a time to have something to stack to and from but that’s still a hassle so you add a third next thing you know the whole purpose in efficiency is shot. DRAWERS IS THE KEY MILWAUKEE!

Fully agree. There should be base models that are 1, 2 or 3 drawers, just like the cabinet module, or the 2 or 3 drawer modules.

You can get the 2 wheel packout folding trolley and stack drawers on that. But yeh when you already spent $350 on the rolling crate like me it’s a hard pill to swallow to spend another $350 on the trolley

Use a packable joey on your rolling bottom (horizontal pack out rail bracket). You could then hang a crate in front of rolling tool box with circ saw

Make a big drawer unit. I love packout and got sick of my ford f250s center console so when I saw the compact packout I got a lite bulb. Packout center console. I ripped out the factory and it was almost the same size just smaller. So know I have a little space to actually vacuum when I clean my truck. Plus I can snap new kits for the top of it for stuff I like to bring w me on trips

I've moved to the draws on the dolly. The stack works as a "return it here" location. I use the tray and crate to pull from the stack. I was getting tired of looking were I placed the latest tool on the job site. The other issue is weight. A this stuff gets heavy. I think there is a limit to what can be stacked on the drawers.

Appreciate your take on packout. I get the task setup you go for, though I personally try to have the minimal amount of tools in the smallest packout they fit in. I use the tool boxes and compact organizers a lot for that. Despite having a massive amount of packout I haven't jumped on the drawers yet. I may try using one for a finishing setup, and switching my roadside repair kit to one.

Check the rolling tool box on Uline.ca . The bottom box tips out so no unclipping of tool boxes. The middle boxes are drawers. This is something you desire from Milwaukee make it Milwaukee but bigger and guaranteed you will sell out. Keep up the great videos.

If your considering a tower that tall , I would only use drawers. Unstacking & restacking totes is back breaking let alone unloading & loading it into a vehicle. Larger drawers are definitely needed.

Get a collapsable folding wheel cart and gerry rig a packout adapter to the base. Then you can just stack the drawers you want on cart unless you put your own drawer unit in the bottom wheel bin, Milw could make a slide out tote for it or a tilt out tote. But I totally agree shallow packouts and the drawer units the way to go.
